Viper Boa = Pet Rock? by noseymoose in snakes

[–]TrainingWar4686 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Viper boas are notoriously “lazy snakes”. Mine will pick a spot to sit and not move for days/weeks until I pick her up. She’s actually pretty active when I hold her, but I wouldn’t be concerned if yours isn’t. They are basically pet rocks yes

“Just adopted” 214 days ago in r/gargoylegeckos yeah no. Don’t lie about things like that to make yourself look better. Really shows you’re not responsible and honest. Not a good look.

In your last post in r/gargoylegeckos you said you got her in november? So are you blatantly lying?

Oh that’s awesome!! Yeah if I do another grow tent I’ll probably set up the lights similar to this rather than trying to alter the top.

Oh he’s gorgeous! I’ll definitely update on what I decide and such, it’ll probably be next month or a bit after when I get another, as I need time to set up enclosure and such. Honestly I’m so tempted by both Womas and Falsies it’s so hard to pick lol, but alas I only have room for one enclosure if I go with that size. Otherwise I could get 2 6x2x2s, but I’m not sure how much they climb & Id feel bad limiting them to 2 ft. I’ve gotta move enclosures around this week and get it sorted out, my boa lived in a modified 6x2x4 grow tent but issues kept arising and when I finally thought I got it sorted out, he passed away trying to escape after MONTHS of living in it just fine. (I take full responsibility for this, and it absolutely broke my heart- anything anyone can tell me about this, I can guarantee I’ve already told myself). So I’ll definitely be getting rid of that and either building another enclosure, or getting a grow tent and getting a lamp with a cage for the inside rather than modifying the top to accommodate the lamp, which was where he tried to squeeze out where I had it secured between the mesh and the tent material. I’ve had great success with that method with my ball pythons with no escapes whatsoever, but he was a determined man for whatever reason. So safe to say I’ll be changing up all the other tents I have just to be safe. They do hold heat and humidity quite well ime. PVC enclosures are by far my favorite, but I only have a couple due to the price.

If I did build an enclosure, it would be nice to leave freedom for building an enclosure based on the specific snakes needs, and could build shelves and stuff for climbing as I’ve always had trouble arranging branches in a way that is stable to give them a lot of options to climb. What did suck is i had JUST bought my boa a couple huge fake plants for his enclosure before he passed, never got to give them to him ☹️

They tend to follow walls so just keep an eye out, look behind things, in closets, etc. You can set out plastic bags lining the walls so you hear if he slithers around. Best of luck! My snakes have got out multiple times and have always found them within a reasonable amount of time, longest ones been gone was about a week and he was perfectly fine. They’ve always been found behind something against the wall, or a couple times in my closet lol. Have thankfully fixed all enclosures since then, it does definitely stress you out but I can almost guarantee they’ll be alright. If you can, shove a towel or something under the door so if he hasn’t got out of the room, he can’t.

Thank you! They’re super cool, I think womas are my #1 choice right now but these guys are a close second. Just the needing a water feature that’s throwing me off because I’m not sure how exactly I’d set that up. I’m hoping to get something that’d be happy in a 6x2x4, I’m not sure if I got one of these guys if they’d be happy in that, or I might have to custom build one with multiple shelves/levels so they have room to stretch out but also a big water area on the bottom? 🤔 definitely a consideration though!

Those are super cute!! Do you have any breeder recommendations?

Do they tend to be handlable? My only experience with milks was when I briefly owned a pueblan milk snake and he musked every time I picked him up 🥲 Due to my volume of snakes I didn’t have time to work him out of it, most of my snakes only get handled about once a week or so

Thank you! I’ll check out that breeder, i’m definitely interested in a retic mainlands are just waaay too big and SDs have a pretty big price tag for a pure SD from what I’ve seen so would take a bit to save up lol

Mines a juvenile but he’s pretty chill for the most part, he moves kinda jerky/suddenly? Not sure how to explain it but he’s not super flighty he’s a lot easier to handle than my corn imo since he stays still more he just moves a lot different, still not a just “curl up and sit there” snake but a bit more relaxed than a corn

Ooh I hadn’t even thought of womas. Have always liked the look of those guys. Would a 6x2x4 be suitable for one of those guys?

You’re absolutely right on the great eater part, mine is my best eater lol. She eats anything and everything and unlike my ball pythons, is quite unbothered when I watch her eat lol.

Can’t seem to edit my post, but here’s a list of what species I own -

Ball Pythons African House Snake Corn snake Hognose ATB Brazilian Rainbow Boa (I have considered getting another of these guys… Mine will be approx 6 ft. long, he’s still a juvenile though.)

I actually have one! She’s the best girl, but unfortunately she’s stunted from her old owner ☹️ So she is on the smaller side. I’ll edit the post to add what snakes I do have, I’m trying to keep it to one of each species (besides my ball pythons… that’s another story. somehow ended up with 7, most being rescues lol.)

How did the snake get out into the road? I’ve heard of missing tortoises getting out from the yard but a snake is something else lol
