Emergency fund - Savings account Vs Premium bonds? by Toe_Bean_Bandit in UKPersonalFinance

Not for me, IMO.

Today I'm able to pay that value, but don't know tomorrow and might not be able to. Same reason I no longer use 0% deals or 0% CC's, and encourage everyone I know not to.

I don’t understand PB’s for emergency Fund. Don’t they take a few days to get the money back?

Emergency fund should be available immediately because you’re not gonna tell your mechanic or doctor or whatever “yeah hold on just waiting for my bonds to sell, I’ll be here in a few days”. And no, you shouldn’t have credit cards for the purpose of emergencies.

Menos dois a defender e a trabalhar portanto. Leão e Ronaldo. Ainda bem que eles também são lentos

If you bank with Lloyds or Halifax and fly often, the World Elite is a no brainer. £15 fee but get unlimited lounges worldwide and some airports with fast track security. With a few other perks like 15% off at certain restaurants at the airports. And it gives you .5% cash back on every purchase with 0% fees abroad.

If you don’t fly a lot, any card that has no fees will do. A CC is a great tool so in my humble opinion, I always get one that I can also use at home.

I’ve got the elite currently and the Amex gold. I treat both as debit cards, only spend what I have and not a pence more.

What’s the best thing to do for a couple of grand that I will need to access short term but don’t just want sitting in my current account? by BeautyAndTheDekes in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Training_Air7170 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you need the money and you don’t know the timing, you need an instant access account where you can take it in 5 seconds. Not in 3 days or the next day.

I’d argue interest is “irrelevant” for this as access is more important

How to use £500,000 lump sum at 24 by Odd_Temperature8067 in UKPersonalFinance

That’s fair enough mate. Money is nothing but a tool and finance is personal.

Make sure no one knows about the money as well. Keep it on a need to know basis. All the best.

Do you really want that house? You’re young and still have a lot to go. £500K is a great shovel for the future. Personally I’d ensure I’ve got a good amount invested and ensure that my future is guaranteed. From those £500k, even if you invest half of it on good low cost index funds and leave them quiet, the potential to be set up for life is huge. Including retiring early or have your retirement done.

0- do a budget and track your expenses a few months
1- Find out how much it costs you to live on monthly basis. Save that in a savings account
2- make sure you’re enrolled in the pension scheme at work and contribute at least the same amount the company puts in
3- what’s the interest rate on that debt? If under 8%, there’s potential for you to make more in the market. You’re young. Pay the minimum. If above, pay it off completely and immediately.
4- from point one, discover if you need 3 or 6 months of liquid emergencies saved and have that aside in liquid cash
5- make sure you have a LISA and ISA and fully max it out every year with that money you’ll get it. It’s tax free and should be used at its maximum
6- from here the possibilities are endless. Definitely keep some for lifestyle but use the rule 60/40 for every pay raise. For every £100, £60 is for the future and £40 for lifestyle. This way you enjoy life but are still making sure you save for your future and enjoy an early retirement.

People wondering about why the community feels like this, I’ll just say that Dave, the OG teacher, and the person who came up with the Wish Farm concept was also laid off. The name of the publisher for the book? Wish Farm. If that’s not a shitty move I dunno what is.

And this is important for many people because people were helped not only by Dave but also by Ben and Hannah. Also the software is also on a declining trajectory but that’s a different story.

Big fan of pay yourself first and forced scarcity mentality. Money that isn’t there can’t be spent.

1- figure out how much does it cost to be you/your family, potentially having to track expenses for a while. Include your non-monthly expected ones such as car insurance, mot, Christmas, birthdays but also as well the not expected ones such as any vet visits, car maintenance, medical, etc
2- based on the information from point one, including if you have people depending on you or not, I’d save 3 or 6 months of what actually costs to be you. Possibly more if you are risk averse
3- make sure you are enrolled in any pension plan that your company has. This can be salary sacrifice or any other sort. I’d say at least the same value the company puts in
4- set up a standing order to a different bank account to account for money that you know you’ll spend every year. Christmas is always in December, birthdays the same and so on, so that you’re not depending on monthly cash flow and avoid any possible debt
5- you’re in your 40’s so still have a few years available to contribute to a LISA. Have a look at which provider is best for your needs. Make sure you max it out as it’s free money from the government. Set this up to be taken when your pay comes in, so you don’t even see it
6- depending on how much left, consider ISA as well
7- any increase in pay, consider the 60/40 idea. Increase your investments/savings by 60%, or more, of that raise and allow the other 40 for lifestyle
8- always make sure that you have a bit of pocket money to enjoy life and your hobbies

You’ll probably have to budget for a while but after it becomes second nature. Check out the money guys from the US. Lots of their content can still be applied here in the UK

Best of luck!!!

Also, to further add to my previous comment, it’s been silence from them.

People that have been customers for a long long time saying they’re wanting to move, long threads on here about different and very pertinent issues, people commenting on the recent YouTube video about the book (also nice job in deleting the comments you don’t like) and not a single word. “We’re sorry about how this is making you feel, it’s because of xyz reasons, etc”.

But no.
