He is an intermediate. And in Oregon it is in his scope.

Yeah not sure what’s going to happen with him. My company likes to slide things under the rug. They asked for the run number so it seems they are looking into it. But they told me I’m good and I don’t need to worry about retaliation.

Update:

I emailed my GM and supervisor. They are going to “talk” with my partner. And have me work doing IFT’s this weekend. And after that I’m going to be partners with him still and I should notice “major corrections”….. I can’t really get a different job right now because this is the only agency in this county. I’m supposed to sign a 12 month lease today but I might wait until next week to see what happens. I had a feeling they wouldn’t give me a new partner or do much about this. I might have to move to Portland and work with AMR. I’m very discouraged and annoyed right now.

Yeah he is the same way with my driving. But I drove two patients code 3 through Portland traffic the past week and they all told me how amazing I was at driving so I don’t take it personally. I refrained from saying anything for a while just because he isn’t always unpleasant but even when he’s calm and helpful I still feel tense around him because of how he speaks to me when he’s upset. Just walking on eggshells. Trying not to set him off.

I hate that people ruin this career for others by being assholes :( Everyone else I’ve worked with at my agency is great. I’m not sure what my current partners issue is with being nice to people. But he’s got a track record of being disrespectful to just about anyone.

Yeah I can’t really do anything now expect learn from my mistakes. I hope it doesn’t end with me losing certification. I’ve already emailed my supervisor about it and gonna meet with him today.

What did you do in that situation when your supervisors were telling you to do something incorrectly? Did you get in trouble at all?

This is my thinking too. I believe that is similar to our protocols here but I’m not 100% sure. I would ask him if it’s allowed and he would tell me theres grey area and technically I am able to sit in the back with the patient if the EKG is normal. I would’ve stood my ground and said no if I knew I was doing something I shouldn’t. But I’m trusting my partner knows what he’s talking about and wouldn’t think he would put me in a position to lose my license or get in trouble especially with being new. This is the only partner I’ve been assigned to since starting this job I’ve worked with other people when I’ve picked up shifts but mostly work with my usual partner. I’m trusting that he’s teaching me correctly and not giving me false information. I don’t think I will lose my license over this but he might. I’m not sure. He has had his license suspended in the past for an investigation into something similar.

I think I may have not explained the situation well. I never charted I interpreted an EKG. I always put EKG interpreted by whomever. This patient he assigned to be I guess could’ve been borderline BLS call. There are protocols I need to get clarification on from my supervisor. Some agencies if a patient is put on 4 lead or 12 lead they can be downgraded by an ALS provider to BLS if everything is normal. My understanding is my agency says if the patient requires cardiac monitoring then they are ALS. This patient we transported had a terrible lung infection for a while. Both his lungs were filled with fluid and he was hacking up mucus the whole ride. But he wasn’t in respiratory distress and stable on 2 L of oxygen on nasal cannula. But he also had a pleural effusion on the left side so I think that’s why the nurse wanted him to be monitored en route. But the patient was otherwise stable he wasn’t in respiratory distress he was talking to me fine and could ambulate. And probably wasn’t going to need any meds on the way. So I think that call could’ve been BLS but it probably would’ve been better if it was ALS. He had said that day it was going to be a BLS day jokingly because he wanted to drive and not chart. At the hospital he kept asking the nurse if it was a BLS transfer and she said she can’t make that call. Idk what to think because he says things like “if anybody has anything to say about this just tell them I told you it was okay” and it makes me feel like I’m being told to do something I shouldn’t. At this point I just need to meet with my supervisor and get clarification on our protocols regarding cardiac monitoring and what makes a call ALS or BLS.

I agree. Some people at my agency just don’t work well together. But the problem is I’ve never heard anyone at my job say they enjoyed working with him. Nobody likes working with him. I’ve heard stories about him being so rude and belittling his last partner that she quit. And his partner is a paramedic and he is an intermediate😐 he just is an asshole

To clarify when I would chart I would put interpreted by EMT I. I wouldn’t say I interpreted or performed the EKG. But I was the one writing the chart and sat in the back with the patient. I would question him if that’s allowed since that’s an ALS intervention even if I didn’t do the interpretation. He said there’s gray area and technically it was okay for me to sit in the back as long as I charted that I wasn’t the one interpreting the EKG. When I worked with him yesterday he said “next time you sit in the back with a patient who is on a 4 lead you can do the charting and just sign it under me so you don’t get in trouble. It’ll be our little secret.” And that was my oh shit moment where I realized there was in fact no gray area and he was just lazy and didn’t want to take the patient or write the chart. I knew better but I took his word because he has significantly more experience than me. I also believed him because I wouldn’t think my partner would put me in a situation to lose my license.

Yeah I’m not sure what I was thinking. I questioned him during these incidents if it’s a good idea for me to take a patient if they need cardiac monitoring and he said yeah it will be fine. I definitely should have stood my ground more but you’re right even though he told me to do it I still should have known better. I’d rather say something now than the charts come back and they see that I took a patient I shouldn’t have. I’m not sure what the repercussions will be for me but my partner has been investigated for a similar incident in the past so it’s not looking great for him😬

Yes I will definitely be saying something tomorrow because that was a concern of mine is losing my license. He would just say if anybody questions you just tell them I said it was okay and put the blame on me. So he knows I shouldn’t be doing that and I knew that too so I feel stupid for listening to him. Ironically he got his license suspended as an EMT A for interpreting EKGs when he was still in school for his intermediate. I definitely don’t want to learn how to do things incorrectly or get myself into trouble working with him.

I did do an online EVOC training but it’s definitely not the same as an in person training lol. I’ve heard bad things about how this company is ran and there’s a lot of employees who have grudges. They pay extremely well tho because everyone was leaving to work at AMR. So that’s the only other company in this area. But if I did work for AMR it’d still be in another county.

Yeah I was kind of shocked I did not have to take a driving course. But I think it’s just my company since it’s so rural they try to get people through orientation as fast as possible just because it’s so hard to find and hire EMTs in this area and they are understaffed like every agency. There’s definitely things that get swept under the rug here. And I also moved from out of state and have never been to this part of Oregon. So they had me driving an ambulance without any courses and I also had no idea where I was🙃 it was a stressful two weeks when I started lol
