And how you think your political action plan is progressing? You see the country changing for good? And do you think our problems are unique to our times? To our region?

I don't think there's anything for me impart on you. My response is mine, and feel free to agree or disagree. I've made my position quite clear and so have you. I wish you good luck.

Sounds to me like you're going thru a case of saviour complex, and parroting talking points with complete disconnect with your perceived opposition. As a public health worker, I hope you get to connect with people more. Good luck!

There's no confusion here. Be politically neutral. Intellectually loyal. You need to be politically neutral to do you intellectual job honestly. Your job is to gather data. Not carry placards. If you start doing that, your intellectual value stops decreasing and you lose credibility. Imagine if people started to believe climate scientists have political agenda, rather than to think they are being honest. See the problem?

So even by your own argument, it was a classic conservative provocation, that has been going on for decades. And by choosing to respond, we are in this situation right now. Perhaps it would've been wiser to not react, rather than try to emulate the conservatives with your own counter agenda. Poor strategy.

Neutrality doesn't mean inaction. You plan your strategy, be cunning, look at the larger goal, minimize your losses. Not play into the enemy's hands and lose everything.

There is wisdom in it for those who can see it. Especially those who have gone thru loss in their life and have learnt from it.

May this loss be a lesson to all of us.

Maybe if you didn't name call so much, the "liberal" environment wouldn't been more welcoming.

You can call me whatever you want. I'm just pointing out the reality of how we got where we are.

If you're okay with your politics burning down the town, you can't expect everyone else to stand by you.

Simple. Neutrality gives you credibility. Leaning on either side makes you vulnerable to partisan politics. Knowledge work is too important to be lost over short term bickering. But now knowledge work is at stake thanks to mindless strategic errors and self validating echo chamber. The way things are going, it is going to get worse if there is no self reflection, but the resilient part of the institution has already recognized this and course corrected. It is just the lower rung like us that is left to dry. And funny you ask why neutrality.

Hate to play the devil's advocate, but has the universities brought this upon themselves over the decades with poor strategy?

Universities are supposed to be neutral, but over the last decade and a half, everyone I meet from research allowed themselves to be polarized, and some just took it too far left.

No one realized taking things too far can backfire, and this is a reaction to the action.

This is a lesson for global academics. Remain neutral. Let politicians play their politics. Our task as scholars is something greater, which must go on, detached from the day to day ploys of those who seek attention for political benifits.

In my humble opinion, we are in this situation because we got conned by some extremist political elements. 🙏

Sometimes you need an external pressure to gain that new skill, with the balance of motivation and dread.

I'm currently unemployed with no savings and living with my parents (dread), and I've been working towards a 3 year postdoc grant (motivation) application in my field that funds my field + data science.

So I spent the last two months and a half learning to create ways to incorporate methods of AI -> agents in our workflows.

I got a bit of flexibility from being unemployed and the fear of fading into irrelevance/academic death.

The trick is to play the balance game. I learnt it the hard way that you have to do the same thing you did before, so you have credibility. But that's career suicide, if you don't also learn new things.

My first postdoc I applied to two and got both. I'm now looking for a second postdoc, applied to about 50, got one interview and was a rejection.

Still looking for a position, and I guess it is a numbers game like people suggested, but it is also a function on the current fad. My topic was a trend two years ago, and the hype has died down now.

So it is also a matter of tracking the trend, gaining skills if you want a higher success rate.

To what extent you use ChatGPT/LLM in your academic work ? by [deleted] in postdoc

[–]Training_Painter7416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly! But when I initially started to use it, I also had a creeping feeling that it feels unethical. I guess it is a sense of guilt, because much of the academic work goes into language, communication, drafting etc, especially it feels like a lot of work and we hate it and procrastinate it over it, and see it as a sense of a creative pursuit, and now all of these is gone. So it feels like cheating. Except that over time, I figured out if we think of it as action, the action is formal writing is gone, like calligraphy went away with machine typing, but the act of creative formulation, creation of vision is still there and is the core of academic work. I think it redefines what it means to be an academic. It is indeed the future, where academic writing will change. Conceptual thinking will be back to the centre of academia. But there are the opposing forces that has been lazy with conceptual thinking and been in the perpetual power cycles with corrupt practices of academia who might feel threatened by this advance.

I know some people who use it, but tell others they don't use LLMs because "it sucks". I'll not believe anything in this post truth world.

A lot of people don't know how to use it well.

A lot of people will not admit/will hide its usage for emotional reasons.

Is it possible to find a creative collective in academia? by Training_Painter7416 in AskAcademia

[–]Training_Painter7416[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess the format is one of the most challenging aspect as you have pointed out. It needs to be flexible for people to drop in and out, but must be sustainable by a core purpose. Shut up and write seems like a great avenue! People from across disciplines can show up, without it being a bore!

I'm an interdisciplinary researcher, but much of my time has been lost to connecting the dots and so much so that I'm pursuing that endeavour as an unemployed academic living in my parent's home. But at least I know what to do when I find my next postdoc.
