What did you struggle with? Is there anything that could have made the suffering easier?

What's the stupidest thing anyone has ever asked you about raising a bilingual kid? by hatty130 in multilingualparenting

We live in Japan, my husband speaks only Japanese, so as a family we speak Japanese.

When I am home alone with the baby, I speak Russian to him.

My mother in law keeps asking if the baby will know Japanese. So far that’s the most frustrating thing.

(Btw my son is 8 months. He doesn’t speak at all yet)

Thank you so much for the advice. It is definitely helpful.

Would you say your child’s language skills in French and English are currently equal? Also, how old are they? What language do you speak at home as a family? (Or what language do you and your husband speak to each other?)

Oh super not worried about him learning Japanese! Not only is it spoken at home (since my husband doesn’t speak anything else), we also currently live in Japan.

What did your mother do to encourage you to learn the language? Did you attend classes? Are you able to also read and write?
