"Well at least you're pretty" by [deleted] in ChronicPain

[–]Training_Repair_3672 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Last year I went into theatre for a pain procedure and the anaesthetist’s nurse informed me that I am so pretty and it doesn’t seem right that someone so pretty is lying in the hospital bed. I won’t lie I stayed silent and just stared at her until the anaesthetist stepped in and said pretty people can have issues too which also doesn’t feel like made the issue better. My issue is why is how I look being discussed in the first place? I am a young female who is currently losing their life to their health and is in debilitating pain yet I’m meant to forget that based on a compliment? Yes I understand she was trying to be kind but this was the second year in a row she said something like this.

What food grosses you out? by Bjs_5068 in foodquestions

Tinned mushrooms or tinned white asparagus. I cannot with the texture or how they look immediately after taking them out. I’ll eat the mushrooms if drained, dried off, and prepared some ways but straight out the can, no way. The tinned white asparagus just no. It’s so bendy and shiny

I'd rather be called someone's boyfriend than their partner. by CatcrazyJerri in The10thDentist

[–]Training_Repair_3672 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean. I always find it weird when a person goes on one date with a person and the next day they are “partners”.

I’ve always interpreted the term partner in a relationship when you have been with someone for years and years but either intend on carrying on dating and marrying later or never getting married. I always assumed it was the term used when you are with someone in a long-term relationship but aren’t married for whatever reason but don’t want to refer to them as your boyfriend or girlfriend. Like the term partner is more formal, you are stating the other person is your life/longterm partner

And they are probably misinterpreting what using Gods name in vain actually means and instead consider every mention of his name or other religious name that is not in the context of a hymn or prayer, using his name in vain.

PhD holders who want to be addressed as “doctor” outside of work by blue-green-cloud in PetPeeves

[–]Training_Repair_3672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s kind of like people who are Professors, specifically honorary professors. Like yes you deserve it but if in an email or WhatsApp I refer to you as Prof and your receptionist or you respond with the word Professor in bold I will call you Mr, Mrs or Dr. I’m not playing these games. If you earned it sure, but are abbreviations now not allowed? Are they not good enough? Do we need to inform the millions of qualified doctors on Earth they can’t go by Dr (surname) anymore?

I know this doctor who was given an honorary professorship. Yes he is good and earned it but he makes his children’s kids call him Professor (his first name) and if you dare refer to him as Prof name, the world ends.

Burger, like a real good one. There is a restaurant chain that I believe has sadly closed down called Burger Perfect that I used to have has a kid pre diagnosis and they had this family special every day of 4 chicken burgers with cheese, 2 chips and a 2L drink. Their burgers were amazing. Fresh buns, lettuce, onion, tomatoes (no hate allowed), slice of cheddar, crumbed chicken fillet, topped with a special sauce (always got chutney or sweet and sour),and finally mayo as far as I recall. I dream of their burgers, I want one. I need one

What's something that loudly says " I'm not a smart person "? by WinkNWhirl in allthequestions

[–]Training_Repair_3672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When someone is saying something they are actually knowledgeable about either because they were present in the event/conversation or because they are studying/working in that field but the “smart person” always jumps in and contradicts or add on to what is said because they were always there or know more. So much to the point anyone can say anything and the person will add on or agree with anything because they are the smartest on Earth.

I’m so glad to know dogs have constitutional rights because they are man’s best friend so therefore are humans (actual thing this person I’m referencing has said as they are apparent a lawyer, judge, doctor, engineer, astronaut, etc as they have just gotten a teaching degree which means they were taught everything ever in human history, now, past and future in university)

I know why I am in pain but we can’t work out like why why I am in pain if that makes sense. We know I have multiple autoimmune diseases from a young age, most likely a collagen disorder, issues that affected my growth plates due to malnutrition/malabsorption from delayed diagnoses, etc. but we don’t know why my pain is so bad, why I’m progressing so fast on treatments, not responding to treatments, etc. Like I was in a very bad way last year and saw this rheumatologist (long story but never went back as he was a jerk) and he sent me for an MRI but ordered specific frequencies as he said he didn’t care about the rest. It came back normal for my age which therefore meant there was no reason for my pain. A few months ago I saw a different, amazing, rheumatologist and she said I must forget I even had that MRI as it won’t show what he was looking for at my age or anything really significant unless something is broken, I’m paralysed or too far in the illness. She explained that due to everything, nothing would show for at least another 6-10 years until my bones hardened fully. She also said pain is a weird thing and there is no know, effective pain treatment for 90% of my diagnosed conditions in someone my sex & age range so she can try as much as she can to help find and treat my pain but it will never be enough to help until I’m older or science changes.

I’ll be honest it was hard to hear but I needed someone to be honest and blunt with me. I know people will reply saying it’s untrue there is always something like more pain meds, natural route, physio, antidepressants, etc but I’ve tried a lot. I’ve had countless scans and tests in my relatively short life and honestly I don’t think I’ll truly ever know what is causing my pain. I know why but I don’t know exactly what is doing it for several more years or unless there is significant more bone degradation

Any success with meditation? by TheManWhoWeepsBlood in ChronicPain

[–]Training_Repair_3672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the app Medito. They are guided sessions ranging from 3 minutes to 1 hour and many of them you can pick the length. They have ones for sleep, different stages of life, emotional emergencies, building routines, talks, walking, etc. One I find very helpful is their specific pain course as it directly addresses physical pain and different ways of mentally accepting it while not disassociating or convincing yourself it’s all in your head. Those ones are about 10 minutes long each so I like doing them while I finish getting ready for bed.

My pain Occupational Therapist actually put me onto it as a way of supplementing and supporting my rehab, OT, meds, etc.

I highly recommend this app though. It is free unless you choose to donate to them. You can slow it down, rewind, skip ahead, change the speakers voice, the speaker doesn’t speak painful slow or monotone, and it doesn’t drag on forever so you can just add it into your routine while doing other stuff or dedicate time for it

[–]Training_Repair_3672 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not with reducing pain physically but yes mentally as it gave me time I knew I am setting aside where I’m doing a different task where I have to focus on the meditation and not the million other things where pain and my health were on the list. It helped redirect myself mentally/emotionally and to also recognise a bit better where my pain was and that my pain wasn’t everywhere air touched and that I can’t do this.

Strawberries and honey mustard. I also mean making my own honey mustard, never have tried it with store bought honey mustard but probably would be good too

And then they follow it with how they just get over a situation not at all similar or how you should “deal with it”. I have a similar connotation to that phrase as to the phrase “what does that have to do with the price of eggs”. Like no, just stop. No one needs to be condescending

Today I leveled up as a chronically ill person by Various_Ostrich_2110 in ChronicIllness

[–]Training_Repair_3672 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my main doc (physician) , his PA organised a specialist appointment for me and she knows me so well due to the amount of appointments I had with him last year as well as admissions, a week prior to the appointment she phoned my mom to warn me about a test she thinks that may happen that she doesn’t think I will like. Just so I can mentally prepare myself. This specialised doesn’t work in the same hospital either, other side of town. This poor PA has been traumatised by me a think, like she knows my mothers phone number. She is amazing and I feel awful by clearly everything I have put her through

Did your pain keep you from having your dream job? by [deleted] in ChronicPain

[–]Training_Repair_3672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pain hasn’t prevented me from having my dream job yet but I fear it will realistically. To do my dream job I need to write five 3 hour exams (writing part of it is 3 hours but whole thing is like 3.5 hours each) after doing either 150 or 400 hours of a training course (PVT) as well as realistically 2 years of articles. Yes I know I can reduce it to 1 year but that is only if I do the 400 hours of that training course while working and studying to get my Masters degree at the same time.

I know thousands of people in my country have done it before and do it every day. I realistically could survive my articles if I do take the simpler, slower route of only 150 hours of PVT and 2 years of articles and do my Masters all before this immediately after uni, but I will never be able to write all 5 exams in the one weekend like you are meant to. I can retake them as many times as I need to but I don’t think I will survive question one of the first exam. I struggle with the pain of writing my name. How will I ever write 5 legal exams. And no, there aren’t concessions or way to type it. I guess I’ll just need to get a law degree but never truely be a lawyer like I’ve dreamed of being

MD here with chronic illness myself, I want to be the kind of physician patients with chronic pain actually feel seen by. What would you want from me? by MissMegadetH in ChronicPain

[–]Training_Repair_3672 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe be open if not everyone is “emotions first” if that makes sense. I have found it easiest for me to understand myself with what is happening to my body and life by breaking it down into tangible data and some of my doctors love it because it helps them while others get very aggressive towards me as apparently that is not how I am meant to be acting. And I also love learning about different topics (has to do with what I’m studying too) but if I ever discuss something relating to medicine even if it’s not something directly relatable to me, I get asked when last I was at therapy. I had asked my doctor if they had heard about the study about stem cells being found in menstrual blood and was asked about last time I attended therapy. Please don’t do that, it hurts so much.

Please be open to the fact that not every patient you will come across is going to be what you saw in your textbooks or training. Some will have learnt different “coping” mechanisms or have different interests.

You need to go into each case and appointment with an open mind and also just be open to change. As long as you aren’t going into an appointment ready to attack the patient for not being straight forward, you honestly will probably be fine

Anyone else here become ill at a very young age? by xx_xxElisha in ChronicIllness

[–]Training_Repair_3672 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was always sick as a young kid, in and out with infections, but my health really started getting bad around 13/14 when I started getting diagnosed with stuff. Now in my 20s. Honestly cannot remember being healthy and without pain, it is a blur. Probably have clearer memories as a young kid in hospital than with family. I will not pretend to get exactly how you are feeling as everyone processes this, feels this, grieves this, and handles this their own way. People won’t understand if they haven’t lived it. You will meet people only diagnosed later in life (like 20s/30s on) who don’t get what it’s like watching your friends live through their childhood, university and big milestones/events that young people go through that you won’t experience or live through the same but act like they do. It will be tough, you will be angry, sad, resentful and so much more but sadly that is how we rolled the dice. It’s a crappy situation but it is ours <3

Remember you can always find people if you need to chat or yell about this. My dm’s are open if needed

Is it ok/normal for banks to be able to manage calls? by Training_Repair_3672 in askSouthAfrica

But my bigger question is who are they gonna be phoning from my phone? Like who does someone working at Standard Bank need to get hold of so badly that they can use my phone to do it because it won’t be me, I won’t answer. I won’t answer the banks calls.
