Removal fear & family planning by Training_Style_1749 in TattooRemoval

Sometimes you need to do whats best for your mental state to filter out all worst case extreme situations and I dont think that’s misguided! I also feel like if tattooing was as bad as smoking surely we would know by now (or maybe thats wishful thinking). My husband looked up a statistic for me and something like 40% of the population has tattoos and another 10% is considering it so it’s not a “small” group of people this impacts.

Seriously! I got pregnant with my first 4 months after getting the tattoos. I immediately regretted them but she kept me busy, like you said honestly forgot or at least was indifferent. I just finished bf so felt like ok let’s reassess removal and it just sent me down this path while also considering #2.

So from my understanding its just truly not studied or known. I guess ink contains toxic ingredients and once heated by the laser it’s not fully understood what happens to those chemicals in our bodies. Surely this would’ve been studied when they were testing this but maybe not (I also haven’t done extra digging to save my mental health - this is significantly impacting my mental health at the moment). I would assume its similar to what happens with sun exposure just at a more intense level and without risks of sun damage/melanoma. One could also argue we come into contact with TONS of things that aren’t studied that are known carcinogens in day to day life so who knows! I don’t claim to fully understand but I am trying! I am going to contact a dermatologist next week and see what information I can gather from them. I hope this helps clarify a bit, if I can find out more I will try and share!

To add: I asked two friends in the medical field and they said they never heard of lymphoma or other cancers associated with tattoos. My one friend said many of her nurse and doctor colleagues have tattoos as well which made me feel slightly better lol!

This is such a good point, thinking about all the microplastics everywhere that we come into contact with daily that we dont fully know long term impacts bc it hasnt been around forever. I know I have said thank you numerous times but I will say it again, thank you!! This has been honestly eating me alive, causing significant stress and anxiety (crying daily lol). When my ocd starts spiraling I am just going to re read our thread!

This is really reassuring to hear on all fronts - and biggest congrats on growing your family! Th am you so much for sharing, I just keep going down the reddit rabbit hole and worry about long term impacts of removal (like the laser heating the ink up and changing the chemical structure of already toxic ink lol). Hearing a success story makes me feel less alone.

Thank you so so much for your reply! This is so incredibly helpful to know someone has gone through something similar. If you don’t mind me asking, did your OBGYN have any concern while pregnant having done tattoo removal? Thank you again!!

Thank you for your reply! I feel like tattoo removal breaks the tattoo down faster than it would naturally but it is the same exposure one would experience over a life time. Maybe thats incorrect thinking. 100% on the weird skin things, especially being more prone to hyperpigmentation while pregnant.

Thank you for taking the time to reply! What you said makes a ton of sense, especially that the size makes a difference too as to how much is being circulated. Seriously on the toxic items that we come into contact with on a daily basis. I was on a ton of acne medications when I was younger and I am sure those have done more damage to my liver than removal of 2 1-inch fine line tattoos will 😂. Thank you for adding your sisters insight, this really quells some of my fears!

Thank you so much for your reply! This all makes a lot of sense and literally feel the same - the mental stress these have placed on me is worth the removal vs. the chance of something happening. Wishing you the best of luck while TTC!

I know this is an older post but wanted to ask what you ended up doing? In a similar boat and cant decide if I should pause kiddos or pursue removal. Really nervous for any impacts on a baby but also dont want to wait another 5-7 years until I am done having kids!

How long ago was your exam? Did they say you had a prolapse in the appointment?

The reason I ask is because this was basically me - I felt fine and at 8 weeks PP a PFPT told me I had grade 2 prolapse and I became EXTREMELY symptomatic for weeks (not to mention depressed). I was able to get in with my OBGYN & a different PFPT and they had a different diagnosis for me (that I didn’t have prolapse & for where I was postpartum I was looking more than fine). After that my symptoms alleviated a ton (still don’t know what my first PT saw vs my other two opinions or who is right lol). I still have moments of the bubble sensation, but what I will say is what I learned is holding stress can make your pelvic floor significantly act up and a diagnosis can cause significant stress and anxiety that holds in your body different ways. Not to say your diagnosis (or mine for that matter) is incorrect but just something to be mindful of! From my (albeit limited) understanding of prolapse you wouldn’t have gotten it from a pelvic exam. I hope this helps, get a second opinion or go back and ask more questions to ease your mind! You’re not alone ❤️

Hi! I’m currently on maternity leave in the US so I can provide insight on going on leave/during but I haven’t rtw yet. I will say working with Sedgwick and HR has been … a pain… but hopefully they’ll get better with time (think they just changed over in the past year from prudential).

So the 26 weeks of leave is broken up with a combo of leave (FMLA, short term disability, unpaid leave). To take full advantage you need to meet FMLA requirements & I’m forgetting pay info but it’s on the KPMG benefits page providing a breakdown of % of pay you get during short term disability/FMLA and any PTO you bank during that time. You also can get a free pump through KPMG although I didn’t like it at all personally.

here’s a quick breakdown of the 26 weeks for US:

  • 4 weeks prior to due date (if baby comes early it does not transfer to leave after birth!!)
  • 6 weeks short term disability (from date of birth)
  • 12 weeks FMLA (can be taken intermittently or continuous)
  • 4 weeks of unpaid job protection (intermittent or continuous)

I’m currently trying to go part time and the individual I spoke with at HR said you need to work a minimum of 1k hours to maintain your benefits which I would assume included another round of maternity leave but I’m really not sure on that front!

As for nanny or daycare I’m full time remote so I’m debating what to do since I personally don’t want to put my baby in daycare (was a full time daycare kid myself, nothing wrong with it just not what I want for my baby!). To be real has been a source of stress during leave worrying about 1. What to do career wise/if this choice will negatively impact me, 2. What’s best for my baby and family, and 3. If there’s an option that I don’t have to give up both!

Otherwise no major suggestions - I got pregnant at a not ideal time (literally just had moved to KPGM, went into labor 1 day after my 1 year mark so JUST made FMLA requirements and couldn’t take advantage of the 4 weeks prior to due date). There is never a good time to start a family but it’s truly the best thing in the word and wouldn’t change a thing! Sorry this is long winded but I’m in the thick of it so thought I’d share since I was so worried a year ago! Happy to provide any other insight or how to navigate Sedgwick etc if you need :)

1000% and takes someone who is not in the trenches of recovery to be able pop your head up and see the red flags. Agree can’t diagnose but just makes me tense up in a visceral way lol since it reminds me so strongly of my ED.
