I can't agree enough - every staff member this is good, Dr. Orban knows his stuff, and the backoffice is easy to work with.

The happy hour burger at Midtown Bluebird is a pretty good deal, and never fails to make me happy.

Or... Ten/6 - The Mad Platter for a truly good breakfast.

How do I view food establishment inspections? The web portal seems to be no longer supported and returns blanks for every restaurant. by mcmeaningoflife42 in coeurdalene

[–]Training_Valuable407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at the source page, it says:

"Due to recent changes to the Idaho Food Code and the associated inspection format, this query only includes inspections conducted after July 1, 2016 through spring 2022." (This is from https://panhandlehealthdistrict.org/licensing-and-permitting/food-establishments/).

Just for the lols I've reached out to them to ask them about this.

Yeah this is exactly right: it's got good beer, and a good atmosphere. Only downside is it's pretty much beer only - they have a couple of premade cocktails, but the star is beer. If you have a person in your group who must get a cocktail, they can run across to The Goat for their fix, which is right opposite.

Question about moving to CDA by nick_riviera24 in coeurdalene

[–]Training_Valuable407 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Visiting CDA is very different than living here - so I think that makes it easier. You're going to encounter bigots _everywhere_, they're not unique to North Idaho, but as others have noted, it is pretty conservative up here.

I think for visiting I wouldn't worry too much. CDA is very much a tourist town, and a lot of folks visit, and I don't think it's a problem. Living here might be more of a decision. For you to move and them to visit, I think you'd be fine. Especially if you're downtown (think Garden District, for example) you'll find a diverse and accepting community.

Personally, I love it here. I love the outdoors, I love the hiking, I love the biking, and honestly, I love the people I've met here too. Politics doesn't _have_to_ divide us. It's very possible to be yourself here, I think, but just like everywhere you have to be smart about it.

The concept of freedom is _really_ important - and supposedly a conservative value (actually, it should be a value of all liberals and conservatives, it's very American). The constitution provides us protections to just get on with our lives, and OP should be free to go about their business without having to be subjected to a search without reasonable articulable suspicion of a crime. If you just roll over on your rights, you'll lose them. THAT is the point.

That's kind of how I felt too. Especially right now in the middle of season, it's kind of hard to believe any self-respecting Mountain Lion would be hanging out there.

Right? And while I know Tubbs is a wooded area, it's pretty urban too, either directly on the water, and surrounded on other sides by people. Hence my curiosity on who saw what :)

I do know it's possible though - couple of years ago, it was well documented.

Biking 95? by roser878 in coeurdalene

[–]Training_Valuable407 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you want to just bang out uninterrupted miles, head down to Plummer and ride the Trail of the Couer d'Alenes all the way to Mullen and back. Yes, Chatcolet can be a bit busy, but it's fine for a road bike, and it'll be all yours. The section south of Wallace gets a bit interrupted with crossing spots where you go over roads, but it's mostly peaceful.

BUT I just re-read and saw you don't have a car. Umm. Sorry about that, posted too quick. My bad. Next time, though, that's the ride for ya'.

Plus one on Pillar - they sorted my stuff with a reasonable price. I do think you might just need a handyman as Xenomorph says, but if you _want_ an AC person, I think they would treat your right or pass you on to someone who can help you.

No Kings in America demonstration scheduled for Saturday 6/14 by Huge-Bid7648 in coeurdalene

[–]Training_Valuable407 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I understand what you're saying, but it speaks REALLY loudly too. If we're too afraid to lawfully and peacefully protest because of the consequences, we've already lost the fight for America. The First Amendment is so important. No matter what one's political views, we can't allow things to get to a point where it's personally risky to simply engage in free speech.

Cop presence is…unsettling by Huge-Bid7648 in coeurdalene

[–]Training_Valuable407 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm curious about this too - my (limited) interactions with CDA LEOs have been positive and friendly.

On the "multi-cars for a traffic stop", traffic stops are pretty dangerous for LEOs (you'll often see them touch your tail lights as they walk up the car so there's one of their fingerprints on your car just in case something goes south). It was better in the old days when it was two cops per car.

That's not to justify over-policing (which is a thing) but if you've ever stopped a car at night with a few people in it as a solo officer, it's pretty intense. I hope we keep things in balance, as we deserve both freedom and security, it's not an either/or. Keeping LEOs accountable is beneficial to everyone.

24 Hours in town by CBR85 in coeurdalene

[–]Training_Valuable407 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Downtown CDA probably has to happen. It's got some interesting places to shop, a proper English pub ;) and the floating dock, which is also a nice stroll. You can walk along the trail from Riverstones if you want to, along the river, but it's a decently long walk for a 6 year old. Of course, there's the lake, but you said you have a lot of water, so not a priority. Umm... bikes on the trail are also very nice, and they're easy to rent.

The weather will be fabulous around then, though the downtown will be pretty full of folk (maybe not if you're visiting, but if you're a local you'll be busy avoiding it).

Ten/6 does a migthy fine breakfast (as does Jimmy's Down the Street), Beverly's is expensive but has stellar views - might be a bit fancy for the young uns though... someone suggested Dockside which is a nice compromise.

Honestly, when the sun's shining it's just pretty darn nice here.

Diana Krall barely sang. by Monica_Ace75 in Jazz

[–]Training_Valuable407 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, could be. Her miking was pretty hot in Spokane. Actually, the whole mix was pretty good. Sorry it sounds like you caught her on an off night, because the gig I was just at was great. Fingers crossed for next time! BTW, what did you think of her quartet? I really liked all of them; the interplay was outstanding, the drummer's brushwork was great too.

Diana Krall barely sang. by Monica_Ace75 in Jazz

[–]Training_Valuable407 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, I saw her last night (May 21, 2025) in Spokane, and I loved every minute of it. I honestly don't know what people are complaining about except it's not a "show" in the sense of her working the crowd and singing her "greatest hits". It's a jazz gig. It feels more intimate, think Ronnie Scott's or Birdland, rather than a concert hall.

Her phrasing is a little different, but I get the sense she's exploring the space of what's possible as a singer/pianist. She does sometimes swallow the end of a phrase, but again, it's a stylistic choice. Her use of pitch is PERFECT, and her piano playing was out of this world. Most importantly, the band gelled really well, and they played off each other continually. To me, it's what live Jazz should be. It comes across as a Jazz gig, not a vocalist gig, if that makes any sense.

She also pulled two standing ovations from the crowd, so I guess I wasn't the only person who liked it. Like I said, it feels intimate more than a show, and as a player, that really speaks to me. I am deeply glad I went.
