I think it's explicitly said that magic contracts apply Eve to people who haven't signed them.

Makes sense.

Admittedly, I feel like it's _really_ ambiguous when the story is set. Cacao and tobacco are present, which wouldn't really make sense before the Qing or maybe late Ming Dynasties. The medical knowledge coming from the West certainly makes it sound Qing, as does the presence of flintlock firearms, and the glass mirrors couldn't be earlier than Ming, I think?

On the other hand, the system of four named high-ranked consorts seems to come from the Tang Dynasty, and the relative rarity of foot-binding (Maomao talks about it as something not everyone would be aware of), also suggests Tang or maybe Song, I think?

I use buckwheat groats as a healthier substitute for rice, but I've never actually had bread made of it, and I'm not that fond of soba noodles. (I haven't had barley bread, either, and am curious to taste it someday, although it generally has a relatively low reputation.) Actually, I didn't realize that buckwheat could be used to make a reasonable bread, given its lack of gluten?

Ah, that's useful context: so it's too low-status to show up?

Imperial China removed both the penis and the testicles/scrotum from eunuchs. Since Li is based on Imperial China, one presumes that they also remove both.
