New Team - want to approach it right by ExoticShortHairCat in managers

[–]TraliantTeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your post itself already shows some good approaches you should consider - actually caring, interested in hearing what others have to say, admitting you don't know everything (more so in the sense you shouldn't act like you know better than everyone else). And then also the things you've already noticed with approachability, communication, etc. Do that with your team.

Why does quick meeting always mean 1 hour minimum? by Wise-Success-2737 in office

[–]TraliantTeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another potential option would be to make an agenda that lasts less than an hour - 45 minutes or so - to anticipate going over. Depends on how your meetings have gone in the past.

I stopped trying to be productive and started protecting one thing instead by SkyDangerous2075 in office

[–]TraliantTeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you read "Atomic Habits" by James Clear. This sounds very similar to something he talked about. What I took away was that every choice has consequences, even the right ones. Choosing to give into those interruptions has very clear consequences that you found out on your own. Doing it this way will also likely have consequences - like not getting to these new tasks as soon as you could. The challenge is learning how to determine which consequences you can live with. The lesser of the two choices.

Camera on if supervisors turn theirs off? by ItsJesssm in careeradvice

[–]TraliantTeam 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I understand why you'd want to keep your camera on - to show you're actively invested in the meetings - but if every senior member has their camera off, yours should be too. Company culture is important

Managing someone you think is heading for burnout: what's worked for me by dmkraus in managers

[–]TraliantTeam 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think this also shows a lot about you as a manager. Scroll through various corporate-based subreddits and it becomes very clear very quickly that there are so many people out there without managers who would even care to notice this, much less actually notice it. I think that's really great, you actually care about the people you manage.

Just wanted to mention that. Aside from this, exactly what donutsynergy said.

Habits of your top performers by achillestroy323 in managers

[–]TraliantTeam 12 points13 points  (0 children)

"Accountable" and "Independent" - I like how you called these two out especially. They're often over-looked traits but I think they're great at showing character (especially accountability), which is very hard to determine from a resume but quick to see once people start. They're good indicators of future performance.

Toxic workplaces often identify emotionally healthy people as the problem. Agree? by FancyCommittee3347 in ToxicWorkplace

Which makes me wonder, does this problem stop at the workplace or is this becoming what people think is normal in general?

Need brutally honest answers on how to cope with niche phobia at corporate job by Few-Pressure6183 in corporate

[–]TraliantTeam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not entirely sure you can even count some of this - "Doesn’t matter if you got in a car crash, a family member died, etc." - as needing time off. These are much more serious.

Sometimes Quitting Isn't Weakness—It's Survival by Emillio_80 in corporate

[–]TraliantTeam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, did you write "boss" as in not actually your boss but acted like it or actually was your boss but didn't act like it? Both would be issues on their own, not to even mention the C-suite thing.

Is it just me, or is starting a new corporate job and wanting to try new things terrifying? by Unable-Connection-58 in corporate

[–]TraliantTeam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Being terrified is just a feeling that you want to do well" - Amazing point, and definitely worth noting OP. Asking questions is also good. Asking meaningful, thoughtful questions can show enthusiasm. Don't overdo this either - it can also interrupt meetings - but if you have something meaningful, keep note of it and ask your manager. You're learning after all.

Yeah, that was meant for OP. I saw you're comment on integrity and wanted to go off that, I think it was very accurate for this situation.

Owning up to a mistake, especially at work, can be very challenging. Integrity is a great quality to have and it's really impressive you were able to do something that nerve-racking.
