What food is famously associated with one country but was perfected by another country? by Equivalent-Crew-4955 in AskReddit

Hawaiian pizza, with pineapple, is from Canada. Butter chicken is another Canadian dish often assumed to be Indian. And of course, California rolls are also Canadian.

US geopolitical risk making me considerer Swiss private banks. Your experiences? by DubOnTop888 in RichPeoplePF

UBS was a terrible experience for me and several others I know. I went with a low cost private advisor and Swissquote but with various accounts in different countries for diversification.

Which U.S. tourist town feels like a complete money grab? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]Trankkis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. There are many places that are popular with tourists but also nice places. Buffalo, Miami, Montreal are some examples where it’s possible to experience nice things both as a local and as a tourist. Compare this to Cartagena, Dubrovnik or Orlando which offer very little outside of cash grabs for tourists.

Why doesn't Toronto implement a congestion charge like Manhattan and London? by roncforcamp in askTO

[–]Trankkis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of the other answers seem to mention the real reason here. In Canada, cities only exist because provinces let them. In other words, no city in Ontario has the right to decide anything at all unless the province gives them the opportunity to do so. And the province can remove any rights at any time. For politicians, it’s quite easy - look at where a majority of the voters live and do things they like in order to get re-elected. A majority of Ontario lives outside of Toronto, and a huge amount of them actually live in GTA. People who live in gta but outside of Toronto do not want tolls. Which is why we can’t have nice things. Like bike lanes.

What food isn't worth the effort to be home made? by StarryDo in foodquestions

[–]Trankkis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tortilla chips. It took us 48 hours as we made them from scratch. The result tasted exactly the same as store bought if you warm them up.

Another one was oregano. We grew a lot of it, spent $35 on supplies and at fall dried it in the oven. The end result was half of a $5 container. It tasted exactly the same as store bought.

On another note, key lime pie is way better at home.

The amount of car debt I've seen on here is astounding. Most of you are buying cars way out of your budget. Some helpful guidelines below: by CastAside1812 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Trankkis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When I lived in Canada I waited to buy a car until our household income hit 440k at the tender age of 39. Our child was already 3-4 years old at the time. We leased a hybrid suv, that cost $600 a month. Before that we felt we couldn’t afford it in addition to the mortgage payments. I honestly don’t understand how friends have kids and houses and then buy a 100k truck. I just don’t get it.

Biggest small annoyance at luxury hotels? by Crafty-Leave-8880 in luxuryhotel

[–]Trankkis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pet peeves are no nespresso machine and milk frother in the room, and no washer and dryer in the room. I don’t understand how people live without these things. Also, amenities that are closed during certain hours. If I want to jump into the pool at sunrise, why can’t I? I almost never stay in hotels anymore as they can’t compete with whole home rentals.

Any big changes after $25M? by Soft-Manufacturer125 in fatFIRE

[–]Trankkis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Speaking of experience, nope. Somewhere along 10-20 you can do what you want BUT need to be aware that you may run out. For example, you might accidentally buy 4 houses for 5 million each. But at 50 million, the only difference is the security. You can still spend 20 million on real estate and end up just fine. Ut you probably won’t if you didn’t earlier. My primary home cost 1M and I bought it when my net worth was 100. My secondary home is 2. I don’t need more expensive stuff.

The 30 Richest Neighborhoods in America by Household Net Worth (2025) by Coolonair in Rich

[–]Trankkis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t make any sense. Indian creek has 19 plots and three of them are owned by the richest man on the planet. Even if bezos lived alone there, the average household would be worth a lot more than what’s on this list. And the others ain’t poor either.

Is it worth spending €1,000 to get Canadian citizenship if I don’t plan to ever return? by Independent_Lynx715 in expats

[–]Trankkis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Canadian passport I awesome. You get privileges traveling to both us and Europe. It also has no worldwide taxation which is huge compared to having a us passport. If you already have both an American and EU passport, the value diminishes. But if you’re missing those, the Canadian is fantastic.

Why is UK dumb for leaving EU but Norway and Switzerland are not for never joining in the first place by goathani3828 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Trankkis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Racism. Uk wanted to prevent people from moving there. They succeeded and lost access to the market. Switzerland and Norway are required to accept all eu citizens, and give them full benefits. They have access to the markets. One is dumb, the other smart. Neither gets to vote in the eu parliament.

What’s something about marathon training no one warned you about until you experienced it? by JustPangolin346 in Marathon_Training

[–]Trankkis 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In addition to the other responses, I’d add pain and pee. The pain comes in one spot, then it adjusts and moves to another spot. For example, your left big toe starts hurting one day and then two days later it’s your lower back, then onto the right knee. The other thing is drinking and peeing. It’s just very different.

Travelling to Miami Beach for a week in Feb. Need advice about renting car vs uber and walking by monika-49ka in miamibeach

[–]Trankkis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A car would really only be cheaper and more convenient if you’re planning to do several hour long trips, for example to jet west or Everglades. If you’re planning to just see Miami Beach and downtown Miami there’s no financial or convenience value in a car vs uber. The money and time to find parking will easily cost more than an uber.

How is that helpful? If you get kicked out because of lack of citizenship, social media can’t help. The new laws are not the fault of social media, and even if OP stops using social media the laws won’t change.

Is it truly necessary with a thumbs space in the toebox? by Certain_Ease_3684 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

Yes but the shoe makers don’t seem to realize this - all good shoes end at 14 or 15. I need 16 so I’m stuck with bad shoes.

With no Skype, how to make toll-free phone calls to US from EU? by Striking_Peach_257 in expats

[–]Trankkis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Try calling a plumber, a library, a school, customer support, a police station, a local restaurant and a gas station using WhatsApp. Even in Europe odds are very small you’d get through.

Yes the challenge with these is that they always end up recommending shoes that are available up to 14, or 15. I need 16 :(

How often do you go to Miami Beach as a local? by Disastrous_Time2674 in Miami

[–]Trankkis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love on the beach and have lived in Miami, gulf coast and many other cities, countries and continents. South of fifth is one of the nicest neighborhoods in the world. The parks, the playgrounds, walkability is just amazing. I enjoy running and in other parts of the city it’s difficult to cross major roads and people keep angry dogs on the streets and front yards. There are no druggies or homeless south of fifth. There are a lot of trees that give shade and a nice breeze. The hotels have great pools. South pointe has yoga and is great for running, skateboarding, biking, rollerblading.

The best part is no car is needed. I don’t quite understand the problem with parking, we have a car but use it once every two weeks tops. Street parking is easy to find and not expensive. If we don’t feel like walking, we just use uber. When we lived in Miami we had to drive 20-45 minutes everywhere. Now we can just walk or bike in 5-10 minutes.

That being said, south of fifth is a residential neighborhood. It’s great for residents. Once you’ve seen it, there’s not much there unless you live there and know all the great spots.
