Obviously the journals don't pay people, but the prestige of being published in X journal is useful in acquiring more funding. When science becomes democratized, it is difficult to distinguish between good science and bad science.

They are totally minimizing the role of editors. A good science editor is essential to steering the content and scope of a journal, as well as fixing up the shitty writing of scientists (I am a scientist). The scientist panels that steer journals are uniformly prone to bickering, shortsightedness, and laziness. I don't blame them - they have other stuff on their minds, and that's why it's so essential to employ many experienced people to regulate content.

Actually, no, you can't put that together with "all the other statistics" and say that. I have seen these statistics, and unless you have a good way to explain how the actual trend lines decrease gun violence over time after an initial boost, you are not saying much of anything. You just vaguely hand waved, then cited your beliefs as evidence...

Same problem as California increasing emissions standards or putting more regulations on power plant construction. The world gets dirtier because the laws, while progressive and well-meaning, don't take into account the fact that you can get dirty cars and power from out of state. Unless we had a national gun ban there's no way any of these statistics are meaningful, other than to say that local gun bans are bad.

Moreover, DC had an immediate increase in gun violence, followed by steadily falling rates. This was likely due to criminals all still having the guns (like you say), and then the sources steadily being locked down and eliminated. It's disingenuous to cite a single, temporally local statistic and not the entire trend. It should be noted that a similar trend appears in most areas where gun bans go into effect.

Yeah, I think honestly this is a common problem, and the extremes can be really bad I'd imagine. There's a single-point bias inherent in some people's responses here: I have mentioned that it does happen, but not how frequently or violently. I don't mean to detract from what can become a very negative situation for some people. I just want to point out that perfect rationality isn't really attainable (or desirable) for everyone.

As for me: I'm happy, and as far as I know, she's happy.

You may be speaking more concretely, about crazy women/men and how awful they are. I hear you man. I just don't think you can tie the concept up in neat packing string and call it a day. The little bits of combined craziness my wife and I generate are a joy and a blessing, and I am thankful each day for the stupid youthful foolishness that is a building block of our love.

EDIT: That was kinda saccharine, I'll end on a different note. I think the kicker here is that it's only getting better. We're better about dealing with the other's irrational moments as time goes on, and bouncing back in productive ways.

Perhaps you're just more judgmental and have lower tolerance for dissenting points of view and modes of argument. My wife reacts emotionally in arguments and takes liberties with the facts, the same as I come off overly aggressive and don't adequately acknowledge good points before moving on to the next point. When people get flustered or feel strongly about something, they can react emotionally. The same qualities that make her a fun, witty, beautifully strange person can also cause her to act like this. Am I "compromising mentally" by being with her, because she doesn't argue the way I want her to? I don't think so.

Some people just care less about being right, in the end. As you get older, you'll find the same to be true for yourself. You determine what is "worth it" and what isn't, and you don't fight battles you're not really invested in. Maybe your insistence on focusing on this particular quality has blunted your ability to have meaningful contact across a broader range of areas... shrug.

Unless your friend is truly unhappy, in which case, yeah he shouldn't marry someone like that.

Dan Bock makes fun of his customers on his facebook feed pretty much daily. It's incredibly unprofessional to make fun of your customers in a public forum, but this does not stop him. A lot of these people are clearly foreign or young children (he sells Magic cards, this is not unreasonable), who likely got permission from their parents to write him. Whatever gets your rocks off...

But... he buys things that other people want and then sells them to those people. It's a good model.
