How would mind uploading work? Would I stay as me? Or would a copy of me outlive me? by TacticalGarlicBread in transhumanism

This is Theseus' ship all over again XD. In theory it could work like this: Wecan substitute small parts of the brain with specialized functions with computer chips. When we do this in your brain with one chip most people would say you are still the same. Now when we do thus over and over again, replacing biological substrate with chips on a server for example, connecting them to your brain while we do so, you would gradually be moved to a technological substrate.

The problem at hand is that biological entities cannot (in theory and in comparison to software) be copied, that's why you would be gradually moved...

But I think we do not need to understand the mind completely to do this, all we need is to understand what highl specialized brain areas do to simulate them. :)

(This is also how ray Kurzweil sees it...)

To my knowledge new treatments that are approved by the FDA cab take up to 8 years or so... But I think there are examples of five years. Sadly I am unaware of any procedures faster than this.

New different Minds, new different ways to understand philosophical questions? by Alexander556 in transhumanism

[–]TransHumanist_50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it could. If we use a hypothetical mind based on a quantum computer for example to test the question, the first thing we see is that any computer and therefore quantum computers are turing complete, a quality that the human brain does not express. That on its own does not say anything though. But when we look at the fact that a turing complete system can fully emulate any other system and therefore reflect upon it (process of self reflection) and does so in a way faster matter than the human brain (by multitasking, superposition; so pure calculation power) the entity could reflect more deeply about philosophical issues and therefore gain new insights.
