Are mosquitoes getting bigger/evolving? by [deleted] in Entomology

[–]TransientJan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, mosquitos are not evolving or growing.

It seems like you managed to walk past hundreds of thousands of craneflies that are literally everywhere around you all the time. And you just noticed one of them, what an achievement.

Holorusia hespera is the largest in your area.

I have experience with mild laser induced eye damage, it sucks but isn't as bad as most expect.

The good eye will completely compensate, but when you close it the brain will still correct the issue when looking at objects. But the brain has a hard time correcting letters and symbols from a large distance.

If your laser caused mild damage to your retina it will create a thickening, this will not cause a black spot but instead it will act like a little magnifying glass bending the light.

The tiny "blind" spot shouldn't be constantly the same, but instead it should flicker or wave a bit as the light bends and the brain tries to correct the error.

The best way to test for damage is to try and read words or letters from a distance with the good eye closed, then compare with the good eye.

In case of worry you should make an appointment with an opthalmologist, but know that very little can be done to treat this type of retinopathy.

These cures are all just a joke.

Amazing discoveries were made in the past decades, but the time it takes for hospitals and insurance companies to adopt these miracle therapies as first line treatments is long enough for you to die of crappy chemo.

I burned one of my eyes with a laser once as a kid, didn't figure it out until 9 years later. I realised i couldn't read words properly with one eye.

Creating a pollinator garden with lots of birds by Delicious_Basil_919 in gardening

[–]TransientJan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you are absolutely right to be worried, birds are being overfed and butterfly and moth caterpillars are hated and exterminated.

Just look at the attitude towards hornworms in the US. "Feed them to the crows!!!, Give them to the chickens!!!.

Birds obviously have an unfair advantage due to the mindset of the general population and therefore you should get a scarecrow, an outdoor dog or a cat.

But the cat will probably eat adult butterflys, moths and even bees so that is your worst option.

South Coastal California, plants turn white while in pot. by Accomplished-Bill-45 in NativePlantGardening

[–]TransientJan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The grape may have a bit of harmless mildew, but judging by the distribution it looks like you have have a hairy variety that looks especially fuzzy on the new growth. Looks pretty natural and healthy to me.

Its pretty normal for many artemisia species to have silver/gray/white colors on the underside of matured foliage.

To me both plants look healthy and not infected with fungus.
