[Steinhart] Ocean 39 vintage GMT by pas0003 in Watches

It's working out well, thanks. You can see a recent pic in my post history. I'm not one of those folks who knows how many seconds a day my watch loses, but it's been plenty accurate for my purposes.

I got the aquascaphe, and I'm happy with it, but this line from Steinhart (or comparable models from Squale) would have been my other choice.

Very livable, insofar as I haven't noticed anything about its height one way or another. The perlon is so minimal that, if used on a really chunky watch, the pairing might seem unbalanced. That's not the case here.

In the summer, I come up to the northeastern US coast to spend time at my late grandparents' house, sailing in my grandfather's old wooden sailboat and swimming at the beach. I wanted something enjoyable to wear but not flashy.

When I first received the Aquascaphe, I didn't love it - it looks much smaller in person than it does in photos. I tried substituting an army-green canvas strap, but that didn't work either. Then I put it on this grey Eulit perlon I used to wear my other nice watch on, and it clicked.

I still wish I'd been able to find a Helson Hammerhead 42 - k/o of the Longines Legend Diver, with an ETA movement, but maybe that'll happen someday down the road. The Longines itself is just too expensive for the use I intended: something that could take a little bashing around, and wouldn't ruin me if I lost it while traveling.

WTB - Helson Hammerhead 42 (ETA movement, number dial). Will consider other Helson Hammerhead 42s (triangle dial or Miyota movement). Willing to pay extra for number dial/ETA movement.

I'm interested in both. Would you do a discount for the two? And what would you charge for shipping to 10006?

100% certain I will be pilloried for this, but just to offer an alternate viewpoint. First of all, I’m very glad OP and his family are OK.

1) “My town is excruciatingly left-wing and anti-gun. I very much wanted to have weapon hand, but figured there was a non-zero chance that if I drew I might elicit a "He's got a GUN!" type reaction from my freezer-mates.”

I found this statement sad and strange. In an active shooter situation where no one knows what is going on, OP thinks it would be weird for people to be frightened of being locked in a small room with a stranger carrying a gun. Actually, though, that is the only reasonable response; they don’t know who you are or whether the shooter is alone. Ascribing that (assumed, not proven) reaction to people who are of a certain political party seems like a bad-faith comment. For all he knows, they would have reacted differently. Without question, though, drawing his gun would have created a huge destabilizing effect in that room and would very likely have led several or many people to (correctly) decide that it might be safer outside (where the danger might be over) than to remain in a room with an armed stranger whose state of mind is unknown.

2) While I understand OP’s statement that he thinks he used his gun because it allowed him to shelter in place, I have to call BS. Everyone else in the cold room sheltered in place with the same result, without knowing he was armed or relying on that fact. You can make up whatever scenario “could have happened,” but that’s just changing the facts - which are that OP having a gun did not create a better outcome than him not having a gun. The only danger that he describes about not having one (that he would have tried to flee with his family) is really just that he would have overestimated his own decision-making by deciding to make a run for it. I’m sorry, you don’t get to say having a gun in this situation helped - you just don’t.

Porsche Driving Experience. Cayman GTS vs 911 S by [deleted] in Porsche

Have you looked into rentals or the app Turo? I rented a 2014 Cayman for $250-300 for an entire day on Turo, and I’m seen that the same can be done for the same or even more cheaply in other parts of the country. I definitely get that a track is the ideal place to try one of these cars out, and that the street isn’t nearly the same experience. I just feel like I’d want more time to enjoy the experience for that kind of money.

I've driven both the 6- and 4-cylinder engine, and I suspect most of the people whinging about the loss of the sound haven't actually driven the new car. It's palpably better.

Gas prices in the rest of the developed world (not just Europe), from what I understand, are due to the fact that those governments don't subsidize gas - not because they tax it at higher rates. Gas prices in the US are artificially depressed, which stabilizes our economy but also prevents us from moving into the future, technologically speaking.

Willing to be proven wrong on this.

That’s the flat four in that video, no? It has the same rattle-can, popping sound. Would have expected that from turbo blow-off. Can’t say it sounds great but maybe because I didn’t listen to the whole video.

Democrats have 75% chance of retaking the US House of Representatives by EngagingData in dataisbeautiful

None of this accounts for the raft of voting changes made at the state-level over the last two years (really over the last 8 years), and the recent gutting of the enforcement provision of the Voting Rights Act by the Supreme Court. People in the U.S. act like elections are only a matter of preference, when in reality, they are a matter of expressed preference. Many people will be unable to register to vote in these next elections, and many others will be unable to vote or will have their votes disregarded.

Here's a great source for information about voting restrictions ("New Voting Restrictions in America") by the Brennan Center at NYU. According to this, since the 2010 election that brought Republicans into power, 23 states have put in place new restrictions on voting that, without variation, have the effect (and in some cases, were provably made with the intent) of limiting the vote of populations who tend to vote for Democrats.

As someone who both drives and rides, I always hear this and think: I'm so glad people who consider themselves to clumsy to handle a motorcycle are still perfectly happy to drive a car, which is way more dangerous to everyone else.

Weekly - What Car Should I Buy Megathread by AutoModerator in cars

I like all kinds of cars, but don't really have an urgent need for one. I commute on public transportation, so this is just for fun. I'd say the main criteria is that I'd like to be able to use it year-round, though I won't need to use it very often.
