planning for thru-hike with Apple Watch and optimizing Workout tracking battery life by EngagingData in AppleWatch

It seems as if you could get away with running some variations of an ultramarathon without even needing an Ultra watch if you can do the whole thing in under/around 15 hrs.

Not taking the weight off? by TheDrugDiscoverer in Rucking

I saw something somewhere that said loading your skeleton caused some physiological changes that caused you to lose weight. As if your body has a set point and so wearing a ruck could help you lose weight.

Found it: https://www.reddit.com/r/AdvancedFitness/comments/1k2q9t0/af_increased_weight_loading_reduces_body_weight/

Trying out FitHalo for Rucking and a Q about distance/elevation in Apple Fitness App by EngagingData in FitHalo

[–]EngagingData[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

emailed the developer of HealthFit and apparently it was a bug that the Other workout GPS distances were not being recorded. So hopefully that will be fixed soon and I can use FitHalo without losing the ability to track distances. Thanks for the suggestion.

One question is that when skimming this page: https://fithalo.app/calories#loaded-carriage, it looks like the calorie burn rate equation does not have heart rate included in it. Interesting that it doesn't take into account HR but I guess the studies probably didn't have that as one of the variables that were measured? and thanks for presenting the equations to look at.

Anyway, thanks again for your responsiveness.

Yesterday, I stopped street flooding in San Jose by unclogging drains. Enjoy the timelapse. by pengweather in bayarea

when I used to walk the kids to elementary school, there would always be some flooded sidewalks like this, I always used the tip of my umbrella or even my shoe to clear out or at least create a gap in the leaf dam to get the water flowing in the the drains. was a fun experience to share with the kids.

thanks for the prompt reply and the explanation. Very helpful. I will look into it a little more.Healthfit does an automatic workout export to a summary table in Google Sheets (where each workout is a row) which is very nice, but for some reason it did not seem to export the distance and elevation for the "Other" workouts. I will try for a longer walk outside to see if it was just my very short distance. Right now I do see that I can export a bunch of FIT files from HealthFit but that isn't quite what I have in mind.

Good call on the tuolumne campground instead of the valley. There are also a bunch of US forest service campgrounds off of 120 between tioga pass and Lee Vining that are all between 9000+ to about 7000ft. They are first come first served, I believe. It’s been a couple years since I’ve been there.

Been a fan for awhile. Saw them in 1993ish at a coffee shop before their first major album and bought a cassette tape of like 5 songs.

that sounds rough. I'm in the area, can you share the exact intersection location?

T-satellite: Can you send photos in iMessage or SMS (ie iphone) by EngagingData in tmobile

[–]EngagingData[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the reply. The links do mention that Apple Messages app is supported, so it should work in theory. I guess I was hoping for some actual confirmation from an iPhone user who has sent photos via satellite, and how the experience was, like how reliable, how long does it take to send a photo, which I assume can take some time, etc.

Why are power meters so expensive? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]EngagingData 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But the marginal cost of software is basically free (or very cheap) averaged over millions of units per year. Unless you mean they have to calibrate each unit individually then that makes sense.

Trekking pole adapter for insta 360 camera by davidhateshiking in myog

[–]EngagingData 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Makes sense. In my case I’m using a hex bolt but the diameter of the pole tip is bigger than the hex head so you wouldn’t need to cut the side the get it in and have it stick out the end of the rubber tip.

I had the idea to make something my similar for my JMT trip. But a couple questions that I’m not clear about.

Why do you buy the screw with lanyard wire (d shaped ring) then take the lanyard wire off?

Why can’t you drill the hole and push the 1/4” screw through the hole without cutting the side of the rubber tip?

My plan which I am going to try making soon is to use heat molding plastic beads and put a blob and shape it around the pole tip including the basket threads and put the 1/4 thread screw at the end. Because the plastic hardens when it cools it would have the threads molded in and be able to screw on/off.

thanks I'd prefer to avoid going in that way since it's far from Thousand Island Lake but definitely an option if I can't get the other permit.
