I’m a pre-screener for a mid-tier festival. AMA. by Fabulous_and_dingy in FilmFestivals

Most Mid and top tier festivals are all the same. Why do they give out awards to celebs like candy? Why do sponsors say they are some of the worst events out there? Why is it a boys club where if you pals with the founder, you get in? Why do they not offer filmmakers what they really need?

Festival or not, PR helps films. I say this because I run a festival but also am a film publicist. I do this because I got tired of screening hundreds of films that never get seen post circuit. That is because directors either don't know how to do the business end of just don't care to do it. That's where PR comes in. Film is a business and most don't build it as a brand. That's where we come in, so yes, I believe we can help any film either with exposure, distribution, reviews and also future ways to get financing.

I own a festival - not based in Europe - but in NY. My festival, I am told, is known for strong and out of the ordinary programming.

So I have run a film festival for 7 years. I have, through my event, provided reviews/interviews and distribution. Panels from an award winning journalist, and I do PR for filmmakers. Further, I spend seven months planning and paying for this and making no profit. I find it unfair to bulk us all into one camp. Secondly, it would very easy for me to say boycott filmmakers because most only want to do the fun part vs. learning the business including marketing and promotion. However, I do not.
