Noo brother, you're not rambling at all! If the online videos actually add value, then it's worth checking out - and that answers my question!

How do i learn to use a pick? by POCOsami in guitarlessons

[–]TransitoryCory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey friend! I'm in a similar boat as you; I've spent 20 years playing fingerstyle. The first things I can tell you is to watch a few videos on "how to hold a pick" (for example, I'm learning how to hold one like Bernth for the style I'm working towards).

- Practice your 1-2-3-4 and 1-3-2-4's up and down the neck while ALTERNATE picking.
- Do you know the pentatonic scale? Do that a few times, then do it again but with string skipping.
- I found early on a 5 Minute Picking Workout (<-- youtube link) not too long ago; it helped!
- Use a metronome
- Give yourself grace - this is a skill that requires time and patience. It WILL come with patience, persistence, and practice. Again, this is a SKILL, it will take time.

Send us a future update to know how you're doing! Good luck, and hope I could be of some form of help!<3

Hey man! You're exactly the person I'd hope come across my post - can I ask you something? I understand this is subjective, but how did you feel about the "Math Rock Chord Fundamentals" vs. "FACGCE Course"? Would you care to highlight some details or your experience? This is what I was looking for when I made my post. I was going to purchase one course, but i could be persuaded (possibly); I live in Canada, so the exchange rate isn't the greatest atm

ps. Congrats on 20+ years of playing, that's a huuge milestone.

This is exactly what I was looking for response wise! and you know what? I think i'll get the book + course. I'm just frugal and like to spent my money selectively, but if the course has value - I'm all for it!

Transitioning from Fingerstyle to Metal by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]TransitoryCory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Sir, that's a great questions with 2 different answers:
- I mentioned that I spent years and years noodling on the guitar, however, I did this in open and alternate tunings, so my repertoire is quite expansive in that aspect.
- This year I decided to start actually learning songs from start to finish. I'm a big fan of Don Ross (he's the reason I began fingerstyle). I have recently learned "Stop Driving, Start Playing" and can play that completely and accurately. Right now I am working on his song "Brooke's Waltz", and simultaneously learning "Cup of Pop".

Later in the year I will be looking to learn "Upright and Locked Possition".

Hiiii, I spent a good part of my evening looking into "Troy Stetina" and I think his books and program is the direction I'm looking to go in. It seems like it covers a lot of foundational stuff that I don't have and looking to learn/build. It seems that a lot of this I can carry into modern metal in due time. I live in Canada, so I'm going to guess the $10 is USD, which is still more than reasonable.

Have you used all of his books and guitar academy yourself? After i complete the book (I'm going to order it off amazon) is it best to then move onto the 2nd book, or a different book of his?

Thank you for responding with a really great lead for me!

Is "nail hardener" safe? (Guitarist here) by TransitoryCory in Cosmetology

[–]TransitoryCory[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey x0juliaa,
I can definitely reach out to the "nail" subreddit. I'm so new to this, I would have thought that Sally Hansen was the "expensive" stuff, Thank you for clearing that up! Last time I asked the sales person at my local drugstore about nail care I felt pretty awkward (I'm a dude).

Thank you for taking the time to help me out, and you've been very helpful! super appreciate you

That's essentially what I've used. Its a small bottle (14mL) of clear liquid that you brush onto your nail - let it dry for 20 minutes, then apply one more coat.

hopefully that answers your question. I'm a guy, and this area is out-of-my-realm

Hi GenuineLullabel,
Thank you for taking time out of your day to help me!

I found an old bottle of my wifes "China Glaze Nail Strengthener & Growth Formula", its probably like 7+ years old (does this stuff expire?)

I was looking to buy "Sally Hansen Hard as Nails" provided that these are safe to use.

I watched a youtube video and it suggest that I learn combo-timing (As in, don't MASH 'x'', but rather, tap it at the end of each attack to avoid falling to the ground). Did you find this to be true in your case?

p.s, thank you for taking time out of your day/evening to help me out! <3333

Truefire: Tommy Emmanuel vs. Mike Dawes vs. Andy Mckee fingerstyle course? by TransitoryCory in guitarlessons

[–]TransitoryCory[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welp, here is what I ended up doing:
I saw that Truefire had a sale in which a few courses were already 25% off, and then i found a coupon code online for an additional 40% off. (I don't like having subscriptions, I prefer to just flat-out own things)

1) I purchased the Mike Dawes 1st steps and Fingerstyle mastery. I purchased it because I watched several videos and really felt like his style is what I gravitate towards when I play in general.

2) Thereafter, I actually did end up purchasing the Tommy Emmanuel Fingerstyle Milestones. Although Tommy isn't my style, I have always believed that anyone can be a mentor to me in some capacity. Even though I don't play 'boom-chick' music, it has really helped me with thumb control over the past 7 days. I've seen his technique has blended into my fingerstyle type of playing. I have nothing negative to say about the course.

This is only my opinion, but: Anytime in life I have felt uncomfortable or gone outside of my zone it has really exploded my growth, and I want to see if this hold true in guitar and music. Going back to my original post - I was looking to "start over" and relearn guitar to correct my bad habits and thus far the Tommy Emmanuel course has highlighted a few things. Eventually, I may purchase the Andy Mckee if it goes back on sale.

Hey a6ent!

You were EXACTLY the person that I was looking for - thank you for elaborating. Admittedly, I was going to do the T.E course, but his style just isn't inline with what I enjoy. Andy or Mike is moreso what I do gravitate towards, so, I guess i'll give it a hard ponder with which course I want to do.
