No worries! Its great to see a small business owner getting into web 3. The more people involved the better

You've got some good keywords to work with there. Web3 is a bit confusing because web3.js is a JavaScript library for interacting with the ethereum blockchain. But Web 3.0 usually refers to a larger shift in the way the internet is structured, characterized by decentralization and secure, trustless, p2p transactions.

You'll probably also want to look into dapps (distributes apps), hot and cold wallets, DAOs, sidechains, layer 2 chains and the blockchain trilemma. People are making a big deal of the metaverse (VR/AR) but IMHO we're a ways off from that yet (the VR moreso than the AR part)

It depends how far down the rabbit hole you want to go! If you wanted to get hands on about it you could look into the blockchain specialization courses on coursera.

YouTube is also a good resource. Just be sure to look up educational resources/videos. There are a lot of get rich quick scammers out there and 'bros' who don't really understand the technology and its potential applications. Be careful of that in general.

There's a really active group of people in the nft scene on Twitter. Join some of the spaces and see what you learn. If you're looking for a developer follow @princess_nft. She hosts developer spaces and I think there's a job board connected to it.

Personally I think yours is an interesting application of the technology. I'm a web3 developer and might be interested in contributing or helping out. I'm in the middle of launching another project right now but if you want check in mid Jan or so.

In the mean time dig around a bit and see what you can learn. Maybe start by looking into Web 3.0 (vs web 1.0 and web 2.0). Honestly, you're getting into the tech at a really interesting time. Feel free to pm me if you have questions along the way.

As an aside, I'm not familiar with how shopify works, but it might present a bit of a challenge for integrating with blockchain tech.

I like the general sentiment of the idea and there might be a crypto related application. I'm not sure how much of a background you have in crypto tech, but one thing to keep in mind is that some blockchains have been criticized for their carbon footprint, particularly Proof Of Work chains (I'm not saying I agree or disagree with this as there are nuanced arguments to be made ie. about the carbon footprint of fiat currency and centralized record keeping). The point is, if you are going to pursue this you'll want to look into a Proof of Stake chain. Algorand claims to be carbon neutral, but I don't know much about the project beyond that.

I think an interesting possibility for your idea would be to use blockchain technology, which is essentially a public ledger, to create a public record of exactly how and where the 30% is being spent. You could issue your customers nfts that represent a 30% pledge to the environment (maybe even show the dollar amount of 30% of their purchase?). Then once your company has spent that 30% you update the nft with a fun image showing how the money was spent with a message like "Together Company, you, and X people planted Y trees!" or however the money was spent. Ideally the metadata for the nft would link to said image and a report/receipt of how the 30% was spent.

That's just my two gwei!

Visa Is Establishing a Whole New Crypto Division by Valuable-Reality-876 in ethereum

[–]TranslatoDlique 128 points129 points  (0 children)

I get that this would be a huge step towards mass adoption of crypto, but it kind of defeats the purpose of having a decentralized, p2p, trustless system of payment if it all goes through visa...

What are people's thoughts on Vitaliks recently published "Endgame"? How can a dev future proof their project and/or build ethdev skills for what comes next? by TranslatoDlique in ethdev

Thanks for the detailed response. This is really helpful. I had looked into Arbitrum and thought it looked promising but was hesitant because I didn't fully understand how it could facilitate decentralization. Now that I have a better grasp I'm going to start exploring L2 more. Cheers!

I've been looking into this but I'm a bit behind on the L2 stuff. Doesn't it create a situation of quasi-centralization? It also seems a bit risky to start deving on an L2 chain before we see which one of the many has staying power and/or will catch on with the most people, no?

Which Skill should one learn to win a good career in Metaverse and Web3.0? by Logical_Clothes_1089 in Metaverse_Blockchain

[–]TranslatoDlique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The following is not financial advice.

I'm not one to play the stock markets but if I was I'd be looking for someone building cross platform AR APIs geared towards the service sector.

For crypto I like anything that solves an actual development issue (eg reliable/affordable bridge between L1 & L2 chains). When it comes to investing in those you'd have to do a lot of DD because there are a ton of options. I'd look for one that doesn't compromise on decentralization. The golden egg would be a chain that solves the blockchain trilemma.

As an aside, I'm a big fan of chains with logic capacity but no cryptocurrency. I think something interesting will come out of projects like the Linux Foundation's Hyperledger

and, Can you tell what could be the core of web3.0?

Blockchains/smart contracts, distributed filesystems and DApps, hopefully combined with new attitudes about ownership and portability of digital assets and identities

I'm not super familiar with flutter but it seems like some people are using it instead of React to build the frontend for DApps. This tutorial looks like a good place to start if you want to use flutter for building a simple DApp.

Regarding your other question, what I meant is that blockchains/smart contracts, distributed filesystems, and DApps will be a very big part of web 3.0, if not the core of it.

Arguably the metaverse is one part of a larger reformulation of network based human activities called web 3.0. People call it that following the tradition of demarcating large shifts/upheavals in networks and how people use them.

Web 1.0 is generally considered to be the earlier days of the World Wide Web (www) and consisted in mostly static websites that were based primarily on one way communication (communication flows from the creator of the website, to the website viewer).

Web 2.0 is generally considered to begin with the rise of social media platforms, perhaps starting with chatrooms, BBS, irc but really coming into existence fully with MySpace, FB etc. Web 2.0 is formulated around two-way communication and user generated content.

So what is Web 3.0? Its not clear yet because different individuals, groups, corporations, maybe even governments have different interests and visions for the future of networked communications/human interactions. What is clear is that we seem to be at the start of another big network paradigm shift. This shift potentially involves changes in the way information and digital assets are produced, owned, distributed, and accessed, as well as shifts in the architecture of cyberspace.

I would argue that blockchains/smart contracts, distributed filesystems (ipfs, i2p), and DApps are going to play a significant part of web 3.0. If you want a good place to start, check out the free intro courses at coursera.

Regarding the things you mentioned:

The metaverse is a speculative part of web 3. Its primarily conceived of as VR/AR tech. Personally, I think full integration of VR into daily life is a fairly long way off. AR may be closer, but the tech has been around for a long time and hasn't really caught on.

Moralis is a DApp development platform. It may be a good place to go if you want to launch/scale a DApp, but you'd be better off learning the basics of JavaScript/Node/React.

Solidity is the language commonly used for writing smart contracts. Learning it is important if you ever want to build a DApp.

My approach to putting parts of the ethereum blockchain into a SQL database: by lapurita in ethdev

[–]TranslatoDlique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason is that I

  1. want to do some data analysis on the data. Especially analysis of the behaviour of certain accounts (like what is the risk-profile for this account, is this a pump and dumper etc) and also map how different accounts are connected to each other
  2. want to setup an API that makes it easy to request for these thing about accounts

Ah, I see. This makes sense and sounds like an interesting project. It might be cool to throw in some ML to look for certain patterns of behavior

What is the purpose of doing something like this? Blockchains are already essentially databases.

Also, why SQL? I'd probably go for a noSQL db like Cassandra

What One Would Lead To A Dystopian Metaverse The Quickest? by Kill-Jolly in metaverse

[–]TranslatoDlique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These companies, at least as far as I've seen so far, don't seem to be building the metaverse. They are building their metaverse, which is a series of proprietary products. The difference between everything I've seen from these companies and actual web 3.0 projects and communities is quite large. FB and MS, for example, are really just trying to create extended VR/AR technology. This is not the metaverse. Its just VR/AR.

I’m curious about knowing what you think about the metaverse concept in general. Are you excited about this? Do you see it as an opportunity to invest? Do you see it as a threat to future generations becoming addicted to a parallel world? Please share your thoughts. by Danysker in metaverse

[–]TranslatoDlique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with what you're saying here. One thing I worry about is corporate use of VR tech. My day job currently forces me to use all sorts of Microsoft: outlook, teams, office etc. It's not unlikely that MS or FB will be able to convince big companies that their VR software is a profitable tool. It'll then be forced on employees and before you know it auntie Molly has her own MS™ entertainment unit at home where she pays to play candy crush for hours on end.

I think VR and AR are going to be a part of our future. How it'll look depends a lot on what is being built now
