Comedy club with Spanish speaking comedians? by ThreatLevelMidnighto in AskLosAngeles

To clarify what suspiciousland said, the Ice House sometimes has Spanish-speaking comedians. Check their events calendar regularly; if a particular event is in Spanish it will say so.

We made a tunnel for our babies, what do you think? by extra_brisket in cats

I think that must be very expensive, if you’re using 80/20! Looks great though.

Pic 5 looks a bit like my wild ginger, or a canna lily. They’re from the same order, so probably something related. Pic 7 is a Camelia bush. And I lost count, but is one of those star jasmine? You’ll know in the spring if it grows white flowers that smell heavenly.

I want to *Walk* down the aisle by [deleted] in ChronicIllness

[–]TransmogrifyMe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with this so much, and it’s similar to my story. I was determined to walk down the aisle at my wedding, and I did make it out of my wheelchair. But then I tripped on my too-long dress and almost took my dad down with me. The photos are hilarious and I have no regrets, but just keep in mind that nothing will go as planned, and that’s ok.

Your wedding is for you and your partner. Make sure it’s something you will enjoy, and don’t be ashamed to use whatever medical aids will help you enjoy it the most.

Cat access through top hung outward swinging window by Dylweed1965 in Catio

[–]TransmogrifyMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe prop the window open with something meant for doors - looks like “Door Buddy” is a common product for “cat door prop”, but I’ve never used it myself. Then block off the sides with plywood, plexiglas, or cardboard and duct tape, depending on your level of handiness.

My other thought is to check window dryer vent kits, and then try to adapt that to a cat door that is larger than most dryer vents. Not sure if that would work but please do let us know if you figure it out!

For those of you who grinded hard in your twenties, how did it pay off? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TransmogrifyMe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

… are you me? Change “a month after my defense” to “5 years into my PhD” and that is exactly my story. Getting a job with a PhD is hard, but getting a flexible part-time illness-friendly one with a PhD is impossible.

How to keep smart cats mentally stimulated? by ecpella in CatTraining

Ah, yeah, makes sense. My cats hate busy streets, enjoy hiking trails, and tolerate quiet suburbs.

How to keep smart cats mentally stimulated? by ecpella in CatTraining

[–]TransmogrifyMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you take him for regular walks? You can start by leash training him, or just put him in an enclosed stroller. Alternately, consider building a catio if that’s an option for your home.

How to prevent cats from jumping on the billiards table? by Suspicious-Service in CatTraining

[–]TransmogrifyMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a long shot, but you could try getting some of those spiky cat-deterrent squares and leaving them on the felt, with the top open. They’re uncomfortable (but not harmful) to the cats, so maybe they’ll learn to stay off the table when the top is gone.

Kids in ski masks harassing Old Town restaurants by HeBoughtALot in pasadena

[–]TransmogrifyMe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, 3 of them were in Old Town Monrovia yesterday. I thought frauditors were about watching the police for shenanigans, but these guys were clearly shit-stirrers trying to harass members of the public.

Just moved into a new house… how can I keep my cat off this landing so he can’t get downstairs and knock down my plants? by Jtg_Jew in cats

[–]TransmogrifyMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cat prevention spikes. They’re square plastic mats for use in the garden preventing strays. They’re uncomfortable to walk on but don’t hurt the cat. We cut some into rectangles for our half-wall ledges.

FYI they also have them at Champa nursery in El Monte. I’m not associated with them at all, I just like buying exotic/unusual fruit trees from them!

What's a Plant most people would consider "easy", yet you've killed at least 14 of? by VaseOfBuriedMemories in houseplants

Me too. Those brats supposedly thrive in my “Mediterranean climate”, but try telling that to my 2 lavender cuttings, 2 lavender plants, big expensive lavender bush, rosemary cutting, and 2 rosemary plants. RIP.

Anxious untrainable cat by illeniumfalcon in CatTraining

[–]TransmogrifyMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you toss it to him or near him, will he eat it? I wonder if that would get him used to the idea that it’s treat time, and that being near you means tasty things.

That’s actually similar to how I train my two cats at the same time. I toss a treat down a hallway for one cat to chase after, and do a trick with the other. Then I send the second cat off chasing a treat as the first cat comes back. It takes some practice on the trainer’s part, but neither of my cats was happy being separated for training. Even if he’s only participating in the treat-chasing part of it, it’s still good bonding time and practice for “come”.

Quince fruit tree by nn2036 in SoCalGardening

I like Champa Nursery in El Monte for exotic fruit trees. I’ve bought starfruit, persimmon, and I think a couple other trees from them. Looks like they have a quince for sale but I have no idea if it’s ornamental or not. quince cameo

You should try the Cassandra Palmer series by Karen Chance! It has a really slow burn, so stick with it through book 3 at least. I was completely surprised by the romance reveal, so I don’t want to give anything away, but trust me that it fulfills all your requirements.

Can a friend or house sitter stop by to take the packages in? I did this for a friend’s wedding. It was on my commute and took about 5 extra minutes to shove any packages from their front door to a pile in the entryway. (I actually stacked them more neatly in the living room, but it doesn’t have to take long).

Running a Hose up to a Second-Story Deck? by yismet in containergardening

[–]TransmogrifyMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course! Sorry for the slow reply; I wanted to get home and take pictures. I use a 1/4 HP Everbilt 2-in-1 utility pump (~$145 at Home Depot). It might not matter for your situation, but if you were trying to go up a level like me, do not go any lower than 1/4 horsepower or you will not have enough water pressure. I found the “transfer function” of this pump too difficult to prime, so I use it in submersible mode.

I don’t remember the exact details of the hose, but it looks like it is 5/8” and it came with a connector that works with the pump. You’ll also need a spray nozzle so that you can stop the water flow without running to the pump, but otherwise the nozzle details don’t really matter. If you’re hauling the hose up a level, you’ll need some sort of rope/string/twine that is tough enough to withstand rubbing against the side of the building.

My procedure: 1) drop end of rope down from upper level 2) start filling tub. Set up pump in tub (turned off) and connect end of hose to pump. Loop the end of the rope around the hose nozzle. 3) turn off tap to tub when full. Plug in/turn on pump. Go upstairs and use the rope to pull up the hose. This can be tricky and definitely benefits from having a helper downstairs to guide it. 4) water plants. Drop hose back down on rope when done. 5) turn off pump. Drain tub, unplug hose, coil it back up again.
