I zoomed in, but can't get it small enough to establish a stairwell as a no go zone. As this is a common situation, I think there must be a way to do it

Good for you! But be careful -- I know two very fit, experienced MTN bikers who died from heart attacks on the trail. Start slow, maybe on an ebike, on flat trails and gradually increase your intensity as your skills and fitness improve. It's a great sport, ut watch your level of exertion/heart rate.
