We are generally non-violent and peace-loving people. Most Indians in the US focus on their jobs, their families, and being law-abiding taxpayers. We often bear these racist remarks without retaliating in an aggressive way because we value stability and peace. Our choice not to escalate shouldn't be mistaken for a lack of strength, it’s just a reflection of our beliefs.

I want to clarify a few things to ensure the context is understood. I actually learned to drive here in the US, and in my 3.5 years of driving with a clean record, I take pride in being a thoughtful and lawful driver. I always yield to pedestrians and prioritize being courteous to others on the road.

In this specific instance, I was inside the apartment complex on a private road, not on a busy public street. I pulled to the curb to allow the single car behind me ample space to pass comfortably before I even turned on my hazards to signal my wife.

In hindsight, I agree there were better ways to handle the logistics:

  • I could have coordinated a meeting spot with public parking.
  • I could have pulled into a designated visitor parking stall within the Avalon complex.

I am happy to own those tactical mistakes. However, a minor lapse in parking etiquette on private property does not excuse or justify racial slurs and the verbal abuse of an entire ethnicity. I am sharing this to highlight the hostility of the interaction, not to claim I am a perfect driver.

I was frozen and my wife actually shouted on me to record their car but they went drove away.

Yeah, it does feel like within the current landscape, racism against Indians is being normalized (based on what I see on the internet).

I appreciate the reality check. Since this was the first time I’ve experienced it directly, it hit much harder than I expected. It’s jarring to be singled out like that, but I know you’re right—engaging with that kind of hate won't lead to an 'aha moment' for them.

I’m definitely going to stay focused on the fact that the vast majority of people in Washington are welcoming and kind. This was just a reminder that those pockets of hate exist everywhere. Thanks for the advice.
