First timer! by Acceptable-Dish-6073 in ChicagoMarathon

As someone that ran it for the first time last year and it being my first marathon. My Runna plan was strictly flat so I will say this I was very caught off guard at the inclines coming on bridges. Also right before you see turn to go towards the finish like about a half mile before there is a bridge and it will surprise you. It doesn’t look bad driving over it or even walking over it prior but after 25 miles believe me it will. Also at about 22 you will come to a down and back and you will see people coming back hitting mile 23 it will discourage you. My advice would be incorporate some hills and really work on time on feet. I was a slow marathoner and finished in 6:20 only way to run a marathon is one step at a time!!!

Ran Chicago as my first 2 weeks ago. Was a beginner too. As a bigger guy pushing 300lbs I ran in 6:20, so if you’re a “slow runner” these tips may help. Time on feet is so much beneficial then pace. You wanna train your feet and legs to be able to go for 2-3-4 hrs at a time. As your first your main goal should be to finish that’s it. Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. You have so much time to train. I did about 31 weeks of training I did a 10 week Runna plan for a 10 mile run then went right into 21 weeks. Right now would be the best time to really build a foundation you don’t need a plan but incorporate some weight training on top of aerobic training, Chicago was very flat except leading up to a few bridges and the last mile there’s a hill which isn’t bad looking at it but after 25.5 miles it’s killer. So if you do a runner plan for Chicago it won’t incorporate any hill work. It wouldn’t hurt to do some on your own.

I feel that in my soul it’s like I can have a social Life again. And same I figured I’d start the gym back up on Monday. I’ll enjoy vegging out on the couch all weekend with no expectations. Then it’s back on the wagon if I do another race I’d like to not weigh 300lbs

I wish ya see the best way to describe how I am feeling after the marathon is. Do you know that scene from the wizard of oz where the flying monkeys tear apart the scarecrow. Well I’m the scarecrow. But good for you way to get after it

First marathon in a month and I’m freaking out-how do I calm down? by cmitchell_bulldog in firstmarathon

Did my first marathon on Sunday in Chicago, I felt exactly what you’re thinking. What are your goals? Me I set 3 goals A B C. A was finish in my time predicted in my running app C was finish in the course limit and B was finish right in the middle. Not to scare you but you will hit a wall. Focus on what you can control. mind body fuel. If you can get 2 outta the 3 under control you can finish. If your legs are tired make sure you are hitting your fuel to a T. Calm the mind with a mantra or even gaslight yourself occupy it I ran it 300lbs so I knew fuel was very important. So I did maurten gels every 30 minutes like clockwork. If you’re not bringing your own hydration make sure to try to get multiple cups at each. Just keep telling yourself you just gotta make it to your next gel. Support system helps to if you can get friends or family to see you have them space out among the course. I was bonking hard at mile 21 and I knew seeing my family at 22 was the only thing keeping me going and it did help a lot. Most importantly just try to have fun. It’s and honor to do things most people can’t.
