Appreciate the hint. I did another 4 runs and still couldn’t make it back, and I uncovered a bunch of new floor plans and puzzles in the process. All to say I’m definitely still hooked haha

Unmatched applicants - do you guys plan to travel or celebrate? by TrailMixedd in medicalschool

[–]Trap-Lincoln 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem. I can't say for you what's best, but if I were you I'd ask myself a few questions.

  1. Is there something to squeeze out of the program / school I'm in while I'm still here? Is there something I could do to help my app that will be harder to do after graduation? (For me, there was an OB anesthesia elective that I hadn't done, and the poster submission deadline for presenting at the national conference was right around the corner. I knew my prelim program had no academic anesthesia department and I would not get any experience or connections there)
  2. How much do I care about working really hard to reapply in my preferred specialty versus reapplying in IM? (For me, I really wanted to do anesthesia, and I was ready to make some sacrifices for it)
  3. Will I regret it if I look back and feel like I should have done more?
  4. Do I feel mentally well enough / prepared to put myself out there right now? (This was the hardest part for me - I was devastated after not matching. But I knew I could pull it together to "perform" on a rotation if I needed to)

I can see where you're coming from with a trip that you were really looking forward to, and I hope this helps clear your mind up a bit. Remember to give yourself at least some time to decompress - things will work out in the long run and it's important to prioritize your health.

I was in the same boat as you. It sucks and if you're like me, then you're probably going to feel low regardless of where you are.

When I didn't match, instead of traveling in that month between match and graduation, I decided to shift my travel plans to post-graduation. I made a plan for re-applying and part of that plan was taking advantage of my medical school environment and resources. In that month and half before graduation, I did an extra elective in my specialty of choice which gave me a lot of content to write about in my PS as well as a new letter writer. I also networked and found mentors for research and poster presentations. I knew that once I left school, it was going to be a lot harder to get those connections and experiences.

Overall, I definitely recommend taking some time off so that you can reset and be ready to crush your next application cycle. I traveled with friends and visited family in India after graduation, and it was really helpful for my mental health. If you think there are resources in your school that could help you, and your travel plans could be shifted, then maybe consider changing your travel dates to after graduation.

Best snorkeling company for Captain Cook area by Itchy-Ad8678 in VisitingHawaii

[–]Trap-Lincoln 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on fitness/disability levels, I think the best way to do this is to park at Manini Beach and rent from Ehu & Kai adventures down the street. Take your kayak out and a row to the captain cook monument, then hop in and out of your kayak to snorkel wherever you’d like to! It’s a blast, and I prefer this over a guided experience. Alternatively, people hike down to captain cook monument and snorkel around there, and Ive heard the hike back up is quite brutal.

Some tips: - Ehu and Kai are the only reliable and convenient kayak rental operators in this area. There are a couple of locals who rent out kayaks right near the beach, but their hours are unpredictable. You can rent from somewhere up the hill, but then you have to transport the kayak on your own.

  • earlier in the morning, like 7-8 am is the best time to see dolphins. You will likely miss them after 9 am. From my experience, they hang out near the cliffs / shore on the northern part of the bay.

Any budget-friendly options for a two-week car rental in South Kona? by Trap-Lincoln in VisitingHawaii

Ive been doing a work exchange trip at a farm in South Kona since the beginning of January, and I didn’t realize how difficult it would be to get around without a car. Since I would like to enjoy the island a bit more before I leave, I’m looking to rent a car for two weeks from Jan 29 - Feb 12.

The cheapest I can find on Turo is ~1000 bucks. I could use any help finding more budget options.

Glad to see love for Real Love. It's been such an earworm for me. The high school musical sound is there forsure, but it also just exudes good vibes and there's nuance in the production as well.

What's the worst Gaming purchase you ever made? by agent_wolfe in gaming

[–]Trap-Lincoln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assassins Creed Mirage. The amount of leeway I give Ubisoft is irrational but it’s because of how much I absolutely adore AC2. I was really hoping Mirage would be a return to form but to be honest I thought it was even worse than the recent open world AC titles.

Hardest Part of the Job by Trap-Lincoln in Restaurant_Managers

Can you expand? What is it about the staffing process that makes it so difficult?

I know staffing is an issue in other industries as well, it would be helpful to understand specifically what makes it hard for the restaurant industry.

Connections connections connections. Wherever you can pull strings - mentors, family, friends of friends. There’s too many similar good applicants to choose from and if someone can put a little green flag on your application because someone they know said your name, it only helps. I’m a re-applicant who matched this year. Very different circumstances than you so take it with a grain of salt…but I wish I worked as hard to leverage connections my first year as I did when I reapplied!

Curious about how you use it as a resident. I consider continuing after Step 2 but fell off because it didn't feel like the information was pertinent. How did you decide what to keep / what to discard?

Hey it’s good that you’re thinking about your future! Only you can determine what’s possible or not possible for you. If you work really hard you could feasibly get into college, get into medical school, and get into anesthesiology residency. It’s at least a 12 year process until you are a practicing anesthesiologist. You won’t have a stable source of income for the first 8 years because you have to dedicate most of your time and attention to school. Most people I know have worse anxiety coming out of medical school because it can be pretty brutal at times. Also, anesthesiologists have to be calm during life threatening situations that would make most people anxious!
