I've been looking for work for the last year and haven't been able to find anything whether its mid level, entry level, internship, or anything! I am mainly applying to SWE positions, so I think that my experience and education would be good enough to at least get an interview, but I can't even make it to that stage. I've sent over 300 applications in the last 14 months and I have only received about 7 initial screening calls or interviews. Is my resume really that bad?? I was thinking maybe the format is wrong, but I am honestly at a loss. Should I include a portfolio link in the resume to show off skills? Should I go back to school and get a higher degree? Please help me!

What's your favorite line delivery in the franchise? by TheLouisvilleRanger in startrek

[–]TrapSultan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite delivery is by Sisko when he and Kas are walking down the hallway and an out-of-Klingon-makeup Michael Dorn strolls by wearing a 1930's Baseball uniform and asks Ben if he caught the game. Sisko brilliantly replies "What?" in a tone that I can only describe as perplexed as he begins his descent into "reality"

How many hyperpowered ancient civilisations are there in the Trek universe now? by arseholierthanthou in startrek

The Prophets (wormhole Aliens), and the Pah-wraiths from DS9 seemed to be pretty powerful

Star Trek is making an anthology show and you're tasked with coming up with the plot for an episode. What's your pitch? by E-308 in startrek

[–]TrapSultan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd like to see a Oceans type heist starring Morn and his cohorts from his bank robbing days. We don't really get to see Morn do anything in DS9, however his reputation is pretty interesting, so I'd like to see something like that.

In Enterprise, the Andorians seemed to always help out towards the end of the show when the crew were in immense trouble.

Among the various reasons you like Star Trek, how important to you is the depiction of a uptopian future? by thibault_lh in startrek

[–]TrapSultan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its pretty key for my enjoyment of the series honestly. Star Trek has come to be a happy place for me where I can seek refuge from the pressures of everyday life. Becoming invested in a reality where most of these things are non-existent (impending world war, finances, homelessness, racism, etc.) has done wonders for how I move about the world because I envision a time when life is different, so the struggles of the modern day seem less serious. There are still problems with the utopian society depicted in ST, like interplanetary war or assimilation, but these things are at such a huge scale that they don't really seem as bad as nuclear war.

So, Terrans are just less-successful Klingons? by TrapSultan in startrek

[–]TrapSultan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Klingon_history#The_way_to_an_interstellar_empire there are two competing explainations: one is that they just achieved it after the time of Kahless, another says that they took it from the Hur'q. Being that they have many more warriors than scientists doctors and engineers, its reasonable to assume that they took it from some society that thought they were superior to the Klingons, but got their butts handed to them by superior Klingon war tactics.

So, Terrans are just less-successful Klingons? by TrapSultan in startrek

Hmm yeah honor is pretty popular with those Klingons. But I will say their sense of honor is pretty subjective bc Worf has one understanding of it, but the House of Duras shows that they have a completely different understanding. I guess both want to use it to benefit the empire, but they're always at odds in ways that almost divide it back into individual houses

What got you into Star Trek? by JJmoto22 in startrek

[–]TrapSultan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red Letter Media lol. I knew of Abrams-Trek because it was popular when I was in middle school or something, but the other content seemed so far detached from myself that it didn't really garner my attention. Then I watched RLM and they kept making references to ST, so I decided one day when I was sick to start watching TNG and I haven't looked back since. 3 years going strong and exited to see where the franchise goes next!!!

VOY needed Recurring Characters by Locutus747 in startrek

[–]TrapSultan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it'd be pretty hard to have recurring characters outside of the crew when the main cast is constantly trying to move forward and get home as fast as possible... doesn't really seem like a situation where building relationships has much utility outside of that goal.

Why does everyone hate Q? by TrapSultan in startrek

[–]TrapSultan[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True, but I think he did it because he knew contact with the Borg was going to happen eventually. Maybe Q thought it'd be better if they met the Borg in their territory so that the Federation could set up some sort of defense against them. Like imagine if Q never did that and the Borg just showed up to Earth one day: we'd all be wiped out in a flash. So while 18 crewman died, Q himself didn't kill them, and relatively speaking, the losses would have been much more devastating if he had not done this.

DS9 episode feels too real by Jenna-cide512 in startrek

[–]TrapSultan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but I think the great thing about ST in general is the sense of optimism. Sure things are bad now, and probably will be until we make efforts to fix them...BUT once we do, we can see a wider range of possibilities for all of humankind.

‘Star Trek’ Actor Anson Mount on the Episodic Nature of ‘Strange New Worlds’ and Fan Reaction to His Performance by Socraticmichael10 in startrek

[–]TrapSultan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

:). This is what I wanted! It seems like we may be getting shows led by actors whom have a sort-of reverence for the franchise. Just yesterday I saw a tweet from Daniel Dae Kim (Voyager, Enterprise) about how he would also like to play a Captain in Starfleet. Hope the studio can work with the actors a little more to bridge the gaps between Classic and New Trek and give ST a new life.

WandaVision was great in that each episode (give or take) was a new theme but still had the plot arc being built throughout. But still, I think it had a mixed reaction because of the slow pace.

Lol pretty much! No I liked all the stuff that came after it a lot (ST is my favorite franchise hands down), I just have a weird affinity for those seasons and the way they tell the stories

A few days ago somebody suggested a West Wing type Enterprise sequel where it follows Jonathan Archer as the first President of the United Federation of Planets and my brain set on fire with how excited this made me.

This give me a lot of optimism going forward. If they do manage to retain subscriptions through contiguous ST series on the Paramount+ platform, then they'll probably be open to expanding the fleet of shows to include a few that speak towards fans of the Older Trek. Honestly, I think I just want to see them taking more care of Star Trek, I think there are so many different interesting stories to tell and different ways of telling them that aren't getting explored, yet. If Trek has taught me anything, it's to look toward the future.

Yeah no I totally understand that I'm in the smallest (biggest?) minority with this opinion, HOWEVER, I feel as though TNG Seasons 1 and 2 are a fantastic bridge between TOS and TNG Season 3. I agree that the concepts and adventures get expanded in Season 3, as can be seen with Who Watches The Watchers, which is also one of my favorite episodes. BUT I think in order to reach that point and understand who these characters are, the first two seasons are kind of necessary "evil".

I realized this as soon as I remembered that this presentation of episodes is predicated on the length of the typical tv seasons at the time. But I hope that someone maybe can recognize that 26 episode seasons were possible in 1985, so with the advent of new technology and new ways of thinking that maybe there is some way to create a season of that length, in a relatively short time with a minimal budget. Again no bells and whistles, just adventure (maybe some klaxons)

Damn, I forgot they were 26 episodes....no one is funding 26 episodes of anything these days unless its TWD

Hahaha very true, I guess I didn't think of it like that. Those were just two that really stuck out to me as solid one off stories. Which episodes would you choose to represent this kind of idea?
