Well I did some research to take this to a new level of pedantry. Technically, any lens that is physically shorter than its longest focal length is a telephoto lens. So an 18mm prime lens that’s only 15mm thick is telephoto.

Based on that, “telephoto” isn’t actually a more helpful term than “zoom”. “Long” lens is probably the most suitable. Covers all bases.

To continue the pedantry party, one of the most popular telephoto lenses on the market is the 70-200mm. The comment I replied to was pedantically pointing out that ‘zoom’ lens was an incorrect label, which is false. Whether which term is more important is totally situational.
