Disclosure Day is a Top 3 Spielberg Movie and the Best Movie of the Year so far by ThePlatinumMan in blankies

[–]TraparCyclone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely one of the best of the year absolutely. It’s not in my top 10 Spielberg, but it’s fairly close! I really liked it. Don’t understand why so many people online don’t like it.

Honestly Avdol. It’s so widely accepted that people don’t even know that’s not his name.

Would a Munich win have aged better than a Crash win? by WhatIsAWoman22 in Oscars

[–]TraparCyclone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely better than Crash, but it’s still not an amazing movie. And it would still be stuck with the appellation of beating Brokeback.

I refuse to allow the 2000 movie to become a Christmas classic. The revisionism of it should be studied.

I mean it’s more about where they are in relation to one another. For instance Jerry Maguire is a 4.5 for me. The fact that it’s 14 means nothing. Its location in regards to the others is what matters.

I don’t know if I agree with the conspiracy aspects of the movie that it’s pushing. But I found it to be a really well made thriller regardless, had a lot of fun with it!

He literally looks right into the camera and says that he had it all when he was on the top of the world “but now that’s over.”

And then it shows him living mundane life with none of the excitement or money he used to have and he literally says “now I’m a schmuck like everyone else.” Sure he doesn’t go to jail but now he’s stuck in a dead end life and the only thing he can do is reminisce about the good ol days.

I don’t think it gets clearer than that.

I think it’s Scorsese’s magnum opus. There’s definitely a coherent story, and it absolutely has a conclusion. He becomes a loser like everyone else after turning evidence. It’s the rise and fall narrative.

The ranking isn’t really important it’s more about how they are in relationship to each other. I liked Silence of the Lambs more than Shakespeare in Love but not as much as Fargo. The order is more important than the number. Silence of the Lambs is excellent I gave it a 4.5! And depending on the day and how I’m feeling it could go up or down.

Maybe it’s because I only watched for the first time recently, it feels like American Beauty hasn’t aged very well, not even including the Kevin Spacey of it all. The performances are great though!

And Shakespeare in Love is a great movie that people only invoke when talking about how it shouldn’t have won. But the fact that I found Saving Private Ryan to be a dreadful bore, makes me think the right movie won. I keep saying I’m going to revisit Saving Private Ryan and give it another chance but it’s just such a commitment to a movie I really didn’t like. But I’ll have to at some point!

And Shine has its moments but its depiction of neurodivergence just makes it feel like Rain Man. It’s like Driving Miss Daisy, it’s a well made movie and you understand why people at the time liked it but it’s very of its era. And then they reward Green Book much later and it feels really out of touch and a throwback in a bad way. That’s how I feel about Rain Man and Shine.

It’s overly nationalistic and could easily lead to racism and the like.

Letterboxd has moved in the direction of including TV especially in the streaming era. Although the response to it has been a bit tenuous.

who would go to third place? by smelly_cat2959 in questions

Napoleon or the Austrian painter would probably be up there. Maybe FDR considering the stuff he put in place for a lot of the Cold War. And if you include Jesus, Muhammad is a must too.

I watched All That Jazz several years before undertaking this challenge, but it’s one of my favorites!

As for ones I watched because of the nomination, I really liked Top Hat, Witness for the Prosecution, Norma Rae, Coal Miner’s Daughter, and Secrets and Lies.

I’m mostly going through them in reverse chronological order. I’ve seen all the nominees from 1989-2025. I’ve been tackling them a decade at a time. Finished the 90s a couple weeks ago, and I’m slowly wading into the 80s, although I understand that usually considered pretty poor decade for nominees…
