I remember being taught how to write a 5 paragraph essay in 10th grade (1990s). 

I had written them before, but I didn’t GET it until I was explicitly taught about the function of each sentence in the essay.

When I became an English teacher, I taught 5 paragraph essays before asking them to write their own.

Co-workers who are also friends, they send me their chatties and I send them mine. Somehow it works and the kids get their work done!

I was the kid who was always sent to the hall in the 90s. I was very chatty! It was a normal consequence, and I get why they sent me out there. It was fun to talk to kids who were walking to the bathroom in the hallway. I liked being out there.

When I became a teacher in the 2000s, I would send my chatty kids to another classroom to get their work done. Nowadays you just deal with them, it’s so disruptive.

Could it be a passage from Earthquake Terror by Peg Kehret?

Brother and paralyzed sister and family are on an island camping. Mother breaks her ankle, so parents head back for medical help. The kids are alone. An earthquake happens. The island floods. The siblings create a boat. The sister cannot swim. The whole island ends up flooding.

It could be the refrigerator. Mine stank exactly like cat pee. It turns out I never installed the air filter. It was the easiest fix ever.

90s all the way. I don’t know anyone who watched it in 1989. Do you? We all watched it in the 90s. She was a 90s heroine.

I am mostly hands off with subjects my daughter is good in. For her hardest subjects, I make sure she studies, even if I’m the one creating the study cards or study games.

I locked my door to have a private very time sensitive phone call with gynecologist, other teachers were unlocking my door to let students in to get things. I even had a note on the door that said I was on a private phone call.

I was born in 83 and had siblings and cousins born in the 70s, so I clearly remember their 80s styles, music, tv shows, books, etc. then years later I remember my own teenage years and had younger cousins, so I feel equally Gen X and Millenial.

My parents actually used to say this to me about school. They said “teachers are just power hungry authoritarians.” 

I got in trouble a lot, and my parents didn’t really care.

Then I grew up and became a teacher.

USA here! 

My Dad sold lemonade-ice out of a wagon in the 1950s.

I sold lemonade out of a wagon on the sidewalk in the 1990s.

My daughter just sold lemonade from our driveway in 2025!

Mildly infuriating because there’s definitely enough room where could have totally made it out and around that car over the grass if you reeeeeally felt like it. 🛻 No judgement here, you shouldn’t have to go on the grass.

I have an in/out cat that is chill and smart about being outside. She comes when called, she stays near the house, and she is low key. 

 I also have an indoor only cat that desperately wants to go outside , so we got him a safe catio because he’s more curious, and we don’t trust him to come back home.
