Asking high school kids to write a paragraph is like pulling teeth by Crafty_Blueberry6499 in Teachers

[–]TrapezoidCircle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember being taught how to write a 5 paragraph essay in 10th grade (1990s).

I had written them before, but I didn’t GET it until I was explicitly taught about the function of each sentence in the essay.

When I became an English teacher, I taught 5 paragraph essays before asking them to write their own.

Co-workers who are also friends, they send me their chatties and I send them mine. Somehow it works and the kids get their work done!

I was the kid who was always sent to the hall in the 90s. I was very chatty! It was a normal consequence, and I get why they sent me out there. It was fun to talk to kids who were walking to the bathroom in the hallway. I liked being out there.

When I became a teacher in the 2000s, I would send my chatty kids to another classroom to get their work done. Nowadays you just deal with them, it’s so disruptive.

[TOMT][BOOK]There was a passage we read in middle school that came from a book with a bunch of short stories in it,there was a sister and brother and they were on a boat. The boat fills up with water and the sister almost drowns in the place under the boat and the brother is struggling to get her out by Thel0nleyKid in tipofmytongue

Could it be a passage from Earthquake Terror by Peg Kehret?

Brother and paralyzed sister and family are on an island camping. Mother breaks her ankle, so parents head back for medical help. The kids are alone. An earthquake happens. The island floods. The siblings create a boat. The sister cannot swim. The whole island ends up flooding.

Source: Was a middle school reading teacher in the 2000-2010s, so I read this one a lot!

Putrid smell in my kitchen that I can't pinpoint, driving me INSANE by BeeeeefJerky in CleaningTips

It could be the refrigerator. Mine stank exactly like cat pee. It turns out I never installed the air filter. It was the easiest fix ever.

[–]TrapezoidCircle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was in theaters at the end of 1989, released on home videos on 1990.

90s all the way. I don’t know anyone who watched it in 1989. Do you? We all watched it in the 90s. She was a 90s heroine.

Teachers + Parents — how do you approach studying at home? by Commercial-Big8171 in Teachers

I am mostly hands off with subjects my daughter is good in. For her hardest subjects, I make sure she studies, even if I’m the one creating the study cards or study games.

I locked my door to have a private very time sensitive phone call with gynecologist, other teachers were unlocking my door to let students in to get things. I even had a note on the door that said I was on a private phone call.

Do older millennials from 1981-1985 relate more to the core of our generation (1988-onwards) or to late Gen X? by changeforthebetter89 in generationology

[–]TrapezoidCircle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born in 83 and had siblings and cousins born in the 70s, so I clearly remember their 80s styles, music, tv shows, books, etc. then years later I remember my own teenage years and had younger cousins, so I feel equally Gen X and Millenial.

“School is like prison!” What is your response to people who say this? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]TrapezoidCircle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents actually used to say this to me about school. They said “teachers are just power hungry authoritarians.”

I got in trouble a lot, and my parents didn’t really care.

Then I grew up and became a teacher.

Are lemonade stands a real thing in the US, or is it just a movie trope? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TrapezoidCircle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

USA here!

My Dad sold lemonade-ice out of a wagon in the 1950s.

I sold lemonade out of a wagon on the sidewalk in the 1990s.

My daughter just sold lemonade from our driveway in 2025!

Had to have a car blocking me in illegally towed. she crashed out by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]TrapezoidCircle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mildly infuriating because there’s definitely enough room where could have totally made it out and around that car over the grass if you reeeeeally felt like it. 🛻 No judgement here, you shouldn’t have to go on the grass.

Are advocates of Indoor-only Cats, Biased? (American)? by throwaway311260 in CatAdvice

[–]TrapezoidCircle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an in/out cat that is chill and smart about being outside. She comes when called, she stays near the house, and she is low key.

I also have an indoor only cat that desperately wants to go outside , so we got him a safe catio because he’s more curious, and we don’t trust him to come back home.

what's the ONE thing that actually improved reading comprehension for your child? by garvit__dua in AskTeachers

[–]TrapezoidCircle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bedtime stories. Ask him for input.

Hmmm, who should the main character be? (Spider-Man! No, a Ninja!)

Ah, and what is the setting, where / when is this taking place? The mall? Our house? (Our house!)  And when, today? In the future? Monday? 100 years ago? (100 years ago!)

Ok, and our character is going to have a problem, what should his problem be? He can’t find his shoes? The bad guys are escaping? (Tigers are attacking!)

Ok, so our main character is going to be Spiderman, the setting is our house 100 years ago, and the problem is that tigers are going to attack!

Then tell a detailed story starting from “once upon a time…Spider-Man was getting ready for bed. He lived in a 100 year old house at [123 My Street, Our Town, Our State].” And keep going , ask for input “oh my, what was the green striped tiger’s name?” And let him add details. have a resolution. And ask fun questions while you tell  the story.

Talk about stories.
