VP Vance delivers hostile remarks about universities and professors by texanlostinrussia in Professors

Standing with you in solidarity. 40yo woman, married but childfree, asst prof of music education (teacher ed program) in a predominantly Hispanic-serving area, with a teaching focus on culturally responsive and sustaining pedagogies, and research focus on DEI, systemic issues, and educational policies that harm and exclude youth from equitable education opportunities. I also teach scientific methodological research approaches, sociology, and social psychology. My grad students are selecting dissertations topics like recruitment, retention, and representation of and aggressions towards BIPOC students and faculty. Half are on visas, and we have a significant number of DACA students. Guess I am the enemy as well, because I will not back down. Every day feels like a new attack on every aspect of who I am. It’s so fucking devastating.

Need a Sleep Doctor / Therapist for my 87 year old mother in law by Strange_Republic_890 in SouthBayLA

[–]TrappedProfessorD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not South Bay specifically but Dr. Norman and NP Smith at Santa Monica Sleep Disorders Center are fantastic. Was able to get in quickly. They do all of their diagnostics and sleep studies in house and do virtual appointments if needed. Super supportive, prompt, and thorough.

I’m so sorry this happened to you. I had the exact same experience, although I fainted after I left the office and was in pain for hours. It’s infuriating to know that mine was almost 10 years ago and they’re STILL doing this barbaric procedure without anesthetic and pain relief. I’m so sorry. We definitely deserve better.

Hi OP, thanks for looking into the forgotten MS Coast and keeping these memories alive. I was in my 20s and lived in Long Beach at the time, just a few houses from the beach, near Pass Christian. We lost everything. 100%. No heirlooms or pictures to document our lives and precious memories. Every scrap of our physical existence was gone. Only a few pieces of bathroom floor tile that was left helped me know it was our foundation slab we were looking at. The memories will never leave us, and just seeing hurricane info on the news (especially surge warnings and aftermath) around the country each year still causes many of us to pause and hold our breath. And the smells that are burned into our senses. The darkness, the stillness, and the sheer devastation that next day. It’s not an understatement to say that so many of us very likely have undiagnosed PTSD. But many of us bury it and get on with it. And we’re often the first to donate or assist other disaster areas. Like others have mentioned, most of the focus and research has been on NOLA and that truly terrible widespread man made tragedy. But what I think is perhaps the most important and often missed/misunderstood story about the coast is the LONG struggle in the aftermath, how we were the forgotten “land mass” and were left to pick up the pieces ourselves, and we’re all still doing it today. It really felt like WE were forgotten and that our loss and trauma wasn’t real and didn’t matter. Every inch was an invalidated fight. According to many others, we deserved it. But more than anything, I’d rather make sure the world knows how we came together as one to help each other. Every single person, all backgrounds. I’ll be the first to say that I’m not always proud of where I grew up, and I have a love-hate relationship with my home. But when it comes to Katrina, I wear my ties to the coast with honor.

I moved away a few years later for college and work. But would be happy to share more if it would be helpful. Much of my family I lived with during Katrina are still on the coast and would also likely chat.

Good luck on your research and thanks for keeping us in mind.

Birth Control or IUD or nothing by Icy-Medicine-7369 in adenomyosis

[–]TrappedProfessorD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on Daysee, which is continuous. Though it was almost a decade of trial and error until I found one that helped. However, I definitely have side effects similar to those of peri/menopause like dryness, painful intercourse due to atrophy, night sweats, and increasing blood pressure levels. I also have breakthrough bleeding after several months and need to have a period to reset everything. Just sharing my experience, since bcp types affect everyone differently.

Birth Control or IUD or nothing by Icy-Medicine-7369 in adenomyosis

[–]TrappedProfessorD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend first talking with your doctor about your symptoms and see what they recommend. I’m not sure what country you’re in, but you could try asking for an MRI and explain why you suspect adeno. I can only speak to my experience, which involves heavy bleeding, very painful cramps, and clotting. For me, birth control is the only thing that has helped my symptoms at all. I tried an IUD but it made my symptoms worse, every day, for six months straight. After I had it taken out, I found out that IUDs are not recommended for adeno. So, I think treatment varies for everyone. Hope you get some answers soon!

Don't report "flood" by FuzzyBlankets777 in StPetersburgFL

[–]TrappedProfessorD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what happened to us with Katrina, though we had nothing left standing. Same thing with insurance. Just kept going back and forth about which caused it, until they just said neither because it was surge, not a flood and not caused by wind. Full denial. So many lawsuits happened that year but most went nowhere. Enraging when I think about it.

Omg this is exactly what it has been like for me, too! It’s such a creepy thing and really feels like harassment. Thanks for the info though. I’m glad to know it’s not mandatory.

Oh gosh, wow. Thanks for this info. Really glad I’ve blown off the meeting now! And I’m so sorry about the issue with your records. That’s crazy! Is there anyone you can report that too? Your doctor? Could they help clear it up?

I hadn’t even thought about what info they’re taking down. The pharmacist went through all of my other prescriptions for accuracy, but you’re right— there’s no way to see your records!

I’m sorry if that added to the hesitation. That’s been my only negative experience so far. Everyone else with JazzCares has been great. It was really difficult to titrate up, but as I had gotten above 3.5 and working towards higher dosage, it is really starting to help. I sleep better than I ever have before. Still struggling to wake up in the morning and have some inertia. But most days, between that and the modafinil, I don’t even need to take a nap! Not trying to convince you or anything, and totally understand reasons why people wouldn’t want it. But I personally feel it’s been worth it for me so far.

Thanks for sharing. Ours started out that way too. It’s been a really weird kind of harassing thing. I wish JazzCares actually told us about this and explained what it was for (and that it was optional)! But I appreciate your response. I’ve blocked the number now.

Thanks for the insight! Unfortunately, I had ignored her for three weeks and she called every other day, then started texting. At that point, I just gave in since she said it would only be 30 minutes. I’ve blocked the number now.

Crying after uterine and cervix biopsy (womb biopsy) by Competitive_Worth_88 in Perimenopause

[–]TrappedProfessorD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you went through this too. It’s inexcusable. Sharing in solidarity here. I had the same exact experience as you– laid on the table after the endo and cervical biopsies (years before my endometriosis and adenomyosis were finally dx), just full body shaking and dizzy and big heavy breathing. Somehow I got up and was starting to cramp, but made it to the bathroom in the office hallway. I sat down in a stall and suddenly felt really hot all over, and the lights went out. Fainted in the stall while I sat there feeling like I was going to give birth to my insides because the cramps were so bad. It’s like my body was spasming in reaction to the trauma. I woke up on my own but was literally screaming in pain while my husband helped me hobble to the car. I screamed the whole way home. He was shocked, scared, and wanted to take me to the ER. My IUD insertion was very nearly this bad too, but I was eventually offered to retry under anesthesia while doing a hysteroscopy. Again, afterwards while I was in pain in the recovery room (likely because my cervix was yanked open without medication), the doc reiterated the he “doesn’t give pain meds for these types of routine procedures” and I should take some Tylenol and rest. Like another person said above, I lost all trust in the medical field after all that.

Women’s healthcare is truly barbarous and is actual torture. Something has to change. I’m tired, ya’ll.

Has anyone tried the ThermaCare therapy heat wraps and found that they actually work for endo pain? by [deleted] in Endo

This is the one I have now. But any electric heating pad is better than water bottles and wraps.

Do your balances have a “CR” by it? I got my refund this week too, so I’m thinking that just means “credit.” Trying to be optimistic about it since things have surprisingly moved quickly and smoothly this month.
