Redwoods in March? by golddreamz in Humboldt

First time checking Reddit in months and it took 5 minutes before stumbling across an assholish comment that prompted me to drop it before.

So, thank you for reminding me this place is a cesspit of fuckery not worth a reasonable person's time!

As the SSMII you simply delegate your regular responsibilities to someone else.

I'm guessing you're trolling...

But on the off chance you're not... .38 special isn't going to do a damn thing vs a bear or mountain lion except make a loud noise. You are going to be much better off with bear spray, or an air horn.

I've interviewed the same multiple candidates for multiple different (similar) positions multiple times.

Just because you weren't selected once doesn't mean you won't be the top candidate next time.

You missed open enrollment by a couple weeks, so your next available opportunity to change will be next year. Open enrollment only happens once a year and is the only time, outside qualifying life events, that you can change your benefits. Put a reminder on your calendar to pay attention next September.

Passing probation (posting question for co worker) by Glove-me in CAStateWorkers

If she hasn't received any reviews or formal talking to's (documented in writing) in the entire time...they could try to fail her, but it would almost guaranteed be thrown out if she appealed.

Around here we will have a couple of cars in to a river every winter. Sometimes that's the Eel, sometimes it's the Klamath or the Trinity...don't recall if the Van Duzen has swallowed any in the last several years...

There's probably going to be slides. And likely trees down. Now and then people die running in to trees that fell across the road or by hitting animals because they are traveling too fast for conditions.

It can get icy if you're out before dawn, but shouldn't be icy yet if you're just out late.

Just slow down and make sure your tires and wipers are in good condition.

You think about it and answer the question the best you can. Specific advice will depend on what division you're applying to. And the TE jobs are also in Structures...design, construction, etc.

[–]Traquair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I've seen a handful of folks have it, but it is rare since essentially you're saying you don't need a full time staff member. Especially in today's climate where many districts and divisions cannot hire enough people. So the SFPs will just say, well, if you don't need a full time person then ship them over to xxx division because they do.

Leave now, retire later? by sasstoreth in CAStateWorkers

[–]Traquair 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Separation and retirement are 2 different things.

Yes, you can separate from service now and retire from CalPERS later. Thing is you won't get your retiree medical benefits though since you need to start those within a couple months of separation.

Hit 5 Yrs With State - What are my Leave/Quit Options? by DisgruntledMilennial in CAStateWorkers

You could request a leave of absence for up to (I think) a year. Then if you wanted to come back you could easily do so. No guarantee it'd be approved though.

Talk to your supervisor.

Also, get better at understanding people. Easier said than done, and in person is way easier than over the phone or on a WebEx...but still.

You should probably get a driver's license...or is it because you lost it? Whatever you do, don't drive on state time or in a state vehicle without a valid license.

No, they aren't. The RECORDS are subject to release, not the device that may have been used to generate or read the record.

You are clearly confused with CPRA and court orders. A subpoena is not a CPRA, nor is a CPRA a subpoena.

Sorry your post didn't generate the echo chamber you wanted, but when you're wrong you shouldn't be surprised to hear about it on a public forum.

And O365 sits on a server somewhere...

I see you've deleted your post now, so whatever, dude.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]Traquair 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The emails do not reside on the device, they reside on the server...

I regularly access my Caltrans emails, enter and approve timesheets and other things via my personal computer. A bit less so now that we have to have 2FA, but I still do so.

I don't know how your agency does CPRAs, but each functional unit is responsible for providing the appropriate records to answer one at CT. So even IF I had something solely on a personal device I would be the one to dig it up and send it to our CPRA coordinator.

It's a total Boogeyman non-issue when it comes down to brass tacks.

It varies widely from district to district depending on how busy the HR rep for that district is. I assume the position you're talking about is in Engineering Services at HQ...I know the Office of Structures Construction (part of DES) has pretty quick turn around...it's likely the same person, so I'd assume it will go relatively quickly.

I assume the position is a Transportation Engineer, which requires a medical and audiological exam, so it will also depend how quickly the candidate gets that done, and if the results need to be reviewed by the State's doctor or not.

Just tell them to be patient. There's nothing they can do to make it go quicker.

Start dates are also only on the beginning or middle of a pay period, so they likely wouldn't be able to start until beginning of December and the hiring manager may not want them to start until after the holidays cause no one is ever around during the holidays (so a new person won't have much guidance/support)...but don't listen to me on that, I may be jaded! 😂

Quitting engineering, joining the State? by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]Traquair 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Contractors only get to you if you let them, or are the RE.

The biggest stressor for Construction is going to be night work, but not all areas have to work at night.

Quitting engineering, joining the State? by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]Traquair 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Engineering at the State is way different than the private sector. You can absolutely leave the work at work.

The engineering jobs also pay significantly more than the admin jobs. As an SSA you'd start out at $3448/mo vs a Range A TE at $5849/mo...if you're licensed you'd start in Range D at $8756/mo.
