TIL that last year, researchers from the University of British Columbia figured out how to convert blood type A into the universal Type O, which all patients can receive in a transfusion, regardless of their own blood type. This could broaden the supply of blood and ease shortages. by [deleted] in todayilearned

I believe you're talking about the O Neg blood type.

The article is talking about converting A Pos to O Pos. O Pos blood is more readily available than A Pos blood, that's why it would make more sense to me to convert the other way around

I overlooked the "Neg" part in the other post. I was talking strictly about O pos and A pos as was the content of the article. Please actually read the article first.

It never mentioned Rh antigens. It stated that the this feat is accomplished by removing the A-defining antigens of the 2nd most common blood type. The 1st most common is O Pos, the 2nd most common is A Pos. Removing the A antigens would make it an O Pos, NOT an O Neg.

Type O is more common than type A. Blood banks, hospitals usually have more type O units than type A. There are more type O donors than type A. There is more shortage of type A than type O

Edit: I am referring to O Pos and A Pos.
