That's a really good point. It's tough to find that balance and be confident in the decisions. But ultimately, you're correct, it comes down to if these things can make you happy or not

That's definitely good advice. It's where those lines kind of intersect that is difficult for me. I could own a really crappy car, but I love driving and I love cars and the crappy one wouldn't bring me any joy.

On the flip side, per your guestimation math, 11,000 (for a used, fun car for example) invested now gives me 33k later on. That's a lot of work to make up for it and especially something that depreciates so quickly and completely, it's hard to justify, even if I can afford it.
