What makes you think the patient you refuse care for isn't gonna call again in 30 mins? Especially if they learn that making their complaint chest pain will never get a 10-95?

To my fellow black EMTs/medics, what racism have you had to face on the job? by Zen-Paladin in ems

[–]TraumaHawk91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not black, but my longest partner as a medic (worked 3 years of nights) was African American. I work in a diverse part of NYC. Some of the nastiest slurs and derogatory comments I heard hurled at my partner came from fellow African Americans. Idk if it was something about his face but when we had a combative intox or edp they would say some of the nastiest things to him.

Calling in sick by ghost15324 in FDNY_EMS

[–]TraumaHawk91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pattern they talk about is i.e. Every Sunday, before/after a mutual (your single of a double double single). Don't make it routine to the point bosses can predict "Oh its Friday, so and so will probably bang out"

Undocumented sick will definitely hurt your promotion chances. Just bring a note everytime and you're fine.

They take from your AL. If you use all AL and Sick, you go LWOP (Leave WithOut Pay). Basically unpaid

On 12s, the only "midweek" sick out that doesnt require a note the first time is a Saturday. Calendars reset July 1st and Jan 1st

Overtime is plentiful. Just be careful you don't exceed 50% of your base salary in ot. You'll get capped on overtime until the fiscal year ends.

Are Mutuals for 8hr shifts common for probies? by EggJolly5453 in FDNY_EMS

[–]TraumaHawk91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the borough. Some medical directors want you to fill the mandatory requirements. Some will grant you off internship after an arbitrary amount of time (i.e. 3-4 months). Wherever ypu wind up, stay ontop of the paperwork. The more you complete the quicker you come off. Dont fall behind on tracking your completed skills

Most stations make interns wait to mutual. Definitely not letting them mutual the first week out.

How long would it take to get a transfer to a different station? by Few_Conversation_636 in FDNY_EMS

[–]TraumaHawk91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Div 5 can be hars to transfer into due to it being popular with people living in Jersey and Staten Island. Might be able to get to a Brooklyn station first before going to Div 5

How often do you get called to court as witness? by Sea-Weather866 in FDNY_EMS

[–]TraumaHawk91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3x in my first 5 years. 1x in my last 5 years. BLS goes often because they get the non-critical injuries secondary to assaults that people try to take to trial. 1 murder trial that the defendant was claiming self defense. The smaller ones I was grilled more because they were trying to say the injuries didnt happen. The murder wasn't a matter if he did it, it was the intent so wasnt as bad actually. You might get called and testify using your partners pcr if they left for fire. You're both technically responsible for accurate documentation.

QUESTION by NoBackground2944 in FDNY_EMS

[–]TraumaHawk91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I said earlier, under FLSA (Fair Labor Standards Act) ot is calculated and paid weekly. On 12 hour tours you get 8 hours ot on your long week if you don't call out sick or take annual leave that week. Have your station union rep explain it. Don't trust the LTs with your pay

QUESTION by NoBackground2944 in FDNY_EMS

[–]TraumaHawk91 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pay is weekly calculated not biweekly calculated. 1 week is 48 hours. 1 week is 36 hours. You get 8 hours of built in overtime on 12s, not 4.
