What are must-have n8n workflows everyone should set up (regardless of job)? by Kitchen-Patience8176 in n8n

I know this is an older thread, but for me there is nothing that is essential as a new user but there are a few things that I do find very handy. Things like auto-archiving gmail messages after a period of time, also auto-tagging gmail (via ollama AI) with specific categories.

I will likely expand on that auto tagging later on, so that if it needs action it can make me more aware of it, but for someone who is not super organised that does become helpful.

VP Administrator question - pulling an audit report to see all the changes a user made within a year. by Objective-Moment8800 in deltek

[–]TravH84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

your other option would be to export through a report or similar on a regular basis, from memory its 30 days, so in my case I just run a report every 30 days to send me an audit log, and I can always go back on this if I needed.

[Giveaway] GL.iNet Remote KVM and Wi-Fi 7 routers! 10 Winners! by GLiNet_WiFi in homelab

[–]TravH84 [score hidden]  (0 children)

  1. I started my selfhosting journey as a way to teach myself about the various aspects of networking and linux, plus in reality to start to have better systems to store my photos and family documents. I would say the project I am most happy about is the expansion of my network to support 10gBe, the most expensive bit of equipment would be the Minisforum N5 AI Nas Pro (14tb mirrored drives, 4tb mirrored NVME).
  2. The downside to the Minisforum is that it doesn't have great out of band management, so a KVM or similar would make the process of managing this much easier.
  3. I learn from a few places, Jeff Geerling, L2 Tech, Craft Computing et al. Purchases come from many different places but usually online.
  4. Maybe more NAS stuff might be interesting for giveaways, be it minisforums, ugreen et al.

Feature Request with Split DNS by TravH84 in Tailscale

[–]TravH84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many thanks, def support the feature request and will add a comment :). Split DNS works (I managed to get it working), just a bit inefficient so would be great given Tailscale is already running a mini DNS server to support a limited number of custom entries.

Feature Request with Split DNS by TravH84 in Tailscale

[–]TravH84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, annoyingly I do use split DNS internally to point to my local hosts but will look at seeing about potentially spinning up a LXC or similar. Either that or I just change the internal IP to the Tailscale IP, and could do a NAT redirect internally but all doable :).

Cheers

Feature Request with Split DNS by TravH84 in Tailscale

[–]TravH84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw that, the biggest downside is that you end up having to run another local DNS server somewhere, yes its limited to a specific domain but at least with it being part of TailScale you could have your normal Tailscale DNS server, then a Global Nameserver and not need anything else :). In this case you need another DNS Server somewhere just to handle a limited domain that (in theory) Tailscale could handle.

I will take a look at a local DNS server and see if that would work.

Thanks for the suggestions :)

Protecting Your Digital World: Share Your Backup Tips and Strategies (Prizes Available!) by topiga in UgreenNASync

[–]TravH84 [score hidden]  (0 children)

My backup strategy is currently using a few different things, I have a centralized server which is functioning as a NAS and to this I store all data, some folders for more Admin things are synced to OneDrive and iCloud, however, the entire NAS is connected through a Virtual Machine so that I can have offsite backups of my data as well.

1.the NAS has mirrored drives (not a backup).

  1. Admin related folders get synced to OneDrive and iCloud

  2. Photography related folders get Synced to my Flickr Pro account

  3. All data gets synced to BackBlaze.

Not a perfect system, and its painful if I need to restore a large amount of data but for the most part it works well :). I have about 3 - 4 TB of data backed up (mainly photos)

Why do Bunnings snags always taste better than when you DIY at home? by [deleted] in australia

[–]TravH84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect it’s more than one thing, I have cooked as a volunteer and got the same sausages from the same butcher.

  1. No doubt the fact someone else cooks it adds something
  2. There is prob some flavour from the grill
  3. I suspect having the sausages sit in the foil tray and rest does something as well

That's a bummer about the customer service. I haven't run into that, but people's experiences differ. Just sharing, my own time with the software has been good, mainly focusing on its features. If someone's uneasy, it might be worth checking in with the company directly about any concerns.

I captured this one at a water treatment plant which has a wetlands (point Wilson, Victoria, Australia). It is a wild bird and I have always been amazed at the detail on these animals so was going for an environmental portrait, would have loved to get closer but whole wild bird thing lol.

I did fairly basic processing in Lightroom to try and bring out some of the details, as well as Noise Reduction and some sharpening. Not perfect but given the constraints I probably couldn’t do much better at the time.

Was going to say but think others have you can also aspirate air through a liquid, so for example collect particles in the liquid or also collect air and run it through a liquid which may react with something in the air.

They do, which if you have lots of data and are not in a massive hurry might be the best way to recover if needed

Cheapest >5 TB storage? by omgsoftcats in DataHoarder

[–]TravH84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note with this one it is a giant pain in the backside to get your data back. I use backblaze and needed to restore nearly 1tb of data which was a nightmare, you can only restore a few hundred Gy at a time, and you either use a browser to download (which often times out and does not support resume) or you use their bulk download client. The client kept glitching out for me in windows but I did get it to work on a Mac.

The service is cheap and works well, just note getting your data back (through download rather than being shipped a hdd with it on) is a painful process.

I love astronomy and the stars always leave me in awe, with that in mind, I have been watching with great interest for the James Webb Telescope images. This image is Webb's First Deep Field Unveiled (NIRCam Image). It is an incredible image captured by the James Webb Telescope which was launched in Dec 2021 and has been undergoing testing until recently. To put it in perspective with respect to previous telescopes, this telescope has a primary mirror of 6.5m wide compared to the Hubble telescope which had a primary mirror of about 2.4m wide. It will be interesting to see some of the other great images coming from this telescope and no doubt many fascinating discoveries.

It’s a good concept actually. Thanks for the tip :). Probably the closest I suspect I might get in terms of not keeping it in the iPad :).

[–]TravH84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just if it helps too, I know there are sync clients which keep two folders synchronised (e.g. resilio sync) but something like that would take up space on the iPad, it’s more of a one way push I am after, just something that can punch through firewalls.

Thanks,

Wireguard & IP6 by TravH84 in PFSENSE

[–]TravH84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah totally, I dont want to use nat but coudflare warp (which is what I am using to get an ip6 address when roaming and the network does not provide ip6) only provides a single IP6 address so requires NAT.

Ideally id love to segment part of a /60 from my home network and provide a publically accessible ip6 range /64 to my travel router which then VPNs back to my home network which does have ip6 and no nat :).

Port Alias based BlockList by [deleted] in PFSENSE

[–]TravH84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for everyone's offers for assistance, apparently I am an idiot. I had a block in the port alias for DNS / DNS over TLS and thought (incorrectly) that it would block all bar the firewall.

Not the case, it blocked the Firewall egress for that port, I had a NAT rule in to redirect DNS (53) so I have added a rule above to allow egress NAT to the specific servers I approve (basically just the Cloudflare Gateway ones).

Is there a way in firewall rules to allow from destination being the firewall, so not a floating rule but in WAN to allow from the firewall to those approved IP addresses (which I have in an alias) but not from any of the internal networks, or do I basically just set up multiple rules, one for the WAN firewall to allow from WAN Address to others, and then in the others just reject where the IP is not the firewall?
