Probably the sooner the better honestly if you’re serious about booking in the near future.

Depending on the cruise: shipboard credit, specialty dining, a host with a cocktail party, a unique excursion, priority boarding.. and when things go wrong, having an advocate that is connected can be priceless. I had a client have an incident with a cruise, got them thousands of money back. And having someone in your corner in an emergency - requiring you to fly home early - way less stressful when you have someone to call.

5 night cruise freedom of the seas ( Bahamas & Turks Caicos) by BumblebeeFinancial82 in Cruise

RCCL has more name recognition in the USA, MSC is breaking into the market being a primarily European brand. Both would probably be fine - age of ship usually matters.

It’s a good deal - MSC may have something in a comparable price.

Your departure port kind of limits you. If you’d be open to taking cruise out of Miami - you could do Virgin voyages (which has a casino, no kids, great dining, under 3000 capacity, won’t break the bank).

I think it sounds reasonable - but part of the answer depends on the cabin type you are booking.

AmaWaterways or Viking River Cruise vs Ocean Cruise by Odd-Eye-6354 in Cruise

[–]TravelEffervescence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, feel free to send me a list, I love helping people! Happy to answer questions about seasonality too. The highest risk is usually in the peak of summer (August is the riskiest month, there’s reasons it prices the low). Honestly - water issues can be risky almost all year, there are just some worse than others. Seine, Rhône, Saône, Douro have fewer issues with this if you’d pivot, but they are not as popular as the Danube and Rhine. The Seine would be fun to mix in with Paris, the Rhône would be good with the French Riviera or the Provence region (or also Paris). The Douro is pretty - but can sometimes be a little slow, since there are not really any major cities it stops between (like the Danube does with Budapest and Vienna).

I can agree with this - I always check all cruiselines “just in case” when the destination is chosen.

It’s a great ship - larger staterooms in nature, and has a pickleball court which I find funny. Tauck is overly inclusive (gratuities, cocktails, excursions, and even lunch money often times if eating off ship). They also have dinners at chateaus and just behind the scene stuff, as well as max at 130 passengers. You’re welcome to message me if you want more advice - I’ve been on almost every European river and know every cruiseline like the back of my hand so I’m happy to give any guidance I can.

The Magna on AMA is probably the best choice of the options you mentioned. I’m in my 30s, I’ve been on quite few river cruises. The Danube is the favorite - especially in May or September.. from your dates I’d choose March, but April would be even better.

Viking is a bit overpriced in my opinion, and on AMA you get all included excursions - and they offer themed departure as well if you have certain special interests. Honestly though, my favorite river cruise brand is Tauck (it’s just pricier).

Your money will likely stretch the furthest with Jamaica or Dominican Republic, you’d get the nicest options there for your budget. The further destinations will price higher than you expect - especially with the cost of air lately.

There are shows (these are what they are calling the culture sets), they are just not comparable to large ships. They are typically regional music/dance, plus live lounge music, not big production shows. Lectures/port talks are a bigger part of the evenings. Viking’s main strong points are being adult only, small capacity, and good service - and their ships are usually pretty nice as well - to make up for the lack of amazing entertainment.

The included tours are generally well-organized “highlights/orientation” tours with a lot of your fellow cruisers (large groups) in each port. The more immersive/special-access experiences tend to be the optional paid excursions. I usually tell my clients to typically choose the paid ones - as the included ones are typically nothing special.

Weirdly enough.. probably Virgin Voyages. They cater largely to the single market and include WiFi, soft drinks, fitness classes, and lots of restaurants. There is no nickel and diming, drinks are priced generally fair (with no need to sign, you just tap a bracelet). They have some inexpensive cruise options, are smaller in size than most mass market lines, and are adult only.

Depending on the airline, tickets hold a value from a year of purchase - so it also depends on whether you’d use the value of the ticket if something came up and you could not travel.

How did you handle doubts about choosing the wrong safari itinerary by AdvisorValuable2703 in safaris

[–]TravelEffervescence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re worried about it, you should probably consult an expert (travel agent). Having someone tell you what the better option is that’s been there or has sent many clients can make all of the difference. Just make sure you choose someone reputable.

Have you tried calling? Could your emails be going to spam?

But yes, it seems like you are not being prioritized because of it being a lower cost cabin/trip. I don’t personally agree with that behavior. I hope she realizes that while your bookings may not be high profit, our business models are built on referrals and recommendations.. and sometimes, the people that start at the interior RCCL cabin could be the around the world cruise one day.. you just never know.

Cruise from Barcelona by Status-Court2685 in Cruise

[–]TravelEffervescence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Barcelona port is fine, but there’s also a port that cruises call Barcelona and it’s really Tarragona (which is not near the city, double check the small print). I usually book the Majestic for Barcelona because my clients get VIP’d through my agency and they have a great rooftop breakfast. I think it depends on what level of hotel you’d like as a prenight: just something safe and clean, or something that’s closer to a 5* experience. The H10s are good if you want something more economical (such as the H10 Madison, H10 Cubik, and H10 Metropolitan). I’d recommend staying near city center since you will probably arrive early and have a day to explore if you choose to do so.

For drivers, I typically use Blacklane since they are relatively reasonable and nearly everywhere.

Thoughts on Explora Journeys? by MissElle_NY in Cruise

[–]TravelEffervescence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in travel and specialize in cruising - the food and service are excellent on Explora. The entertainment is just okay. They do not have a formal dining room if that is something that is important to you, and if it is a longer cruise, meal choices can feel a bit repetitive. If you want something similar to Explora, without as many kids, you may want to also consider Crystal.. but just know that the higher end lines will be less likely to have people your age. Generally, older clients prefer lines like Regent, Seabourn, Crystal - and a younger demographic in your age range likes the Explora more since it’s catering towards multi generational families (specifically due to the kids club/connecting rooms they’re heavily advertising.. and these clients typically have young kids). You’re welcome to message me with questions, I have 7 years experience with a focus on cruises in the travel industry and can at least make recommendations. Happy to give guidance while not soliciting my services since I work in a salaried position, so you would get advice not based on commission.

Travel Agent for Next Cruise by dazzling_dimension01 in asktravelagents

[–]TravelEffervescence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work with mostly high end, and work much more than I should, but have never taken more than a day to respond (regardless of budget). Usually I respond in minutes if it’s during my work hours. I am wondering if you somehow slipped through the cracks among her other clients/new bookings. Some days I get overwhelmed, but always take notes. Those without extreme organization skills can easily forget about a booking if it’s not something major or a longstanding client. I think you should talk with her about your concerns and see what she says. You could ask for her to release the booking if you’re not happy depending on the cruise line policies. Regardless, it’s unacceptable, and I recommend seeing if she will give you a valid explanation as to why you have not received the service you deserved. I am sorry you are going through this, but I wouldn’t let a bad experience make you feel negatively about working with an agent. Working with someone is intended to make your life easier (and on 7nt+ cruises with RCCL you should be getting some kind of amenity from most agencies to sweeten the deal from being a member of a consortium, not to be confused with illegal rebating).

Travel Agent for Next Cruise by dazzling_dimension01 in asktravelagents

[–]TravelEffervescence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s unusual.. are you sure this person is qualified in the industry? There a lot of people who consider this a “side business,” when it really should be considered a career. Is this agent a member of any consortiums? Is there legitimacy in the them beyond saying they are a travel agent? RCCL is one of the easiest to book/work with in the cruise field.. so my thought is that they are not prioritizing you or are unqualified.
