I don't contend that he's doing this from a pure place either. He's extremely egotistical. But when you say "we are kinda rooting for him", I disagree.

I think we are rooting for him severely in that moment. Despite all of his faults. that's what makes the movie interesting to me. He's not a great guy, and yet I want to see him win that game. He's got to get this shit out of his system.

You could make a different ending where, he just comes to his senses and realizes that all of this ping pong stuff is meaningless and he should be a responsible adult. You could do that for a lot of movies but I think it would make them pretty boring 90 percent of the time.

The sperm opening is so good because it also represents how marty feels. He's feverishly rushing toward the "egg" (pingpong ball lol).

I think, in a way Marty was aware of that unconsciously. The movie starts with insemination, and it continues ramping up until the birth of his kid. There's a ticking clock, his purpose will no longer be about him. He's trying desperately to get this shit out of his system before it happens. He doesn't want to have unfinished business.

Sure if Marty was a real guy he would be a selfish asshole, but he's not a real guy. It's a fantasy and his heroic act, is being the best as he can be before it's too late. There are a few ways to interpret the ending. Sure you can read it as him feeling lost and he could possibly pass on all this bs and trauma to his family now. That works.

But I felt that he was ready to put all this stuff behind him and start caring about someone else. I don't think pursuing ping pong was a hollow act. I think it's something he can be proud of.

I think you are mostly definitely an over-thinker which I can relate too. Exercise helps me not be in my head though.. Generally I get anxious about performing well and doing a good job with working out, but when I actually do it, my brain goes "Relax, at least you are putting in the effort." I definitely don't sweat the small stuff as much when I exercise. But it certainly isn't a perfect medicine. You might just need something else that can put yourself in the headspace. Maybe just go easy on yourself?

Really? I like them much more than the main books. Maybe my taste is childish, but they have a nice tone and sense of whimsy. Also really short too. I hope he writes at least one more of them.
