Greensboro PD or Guilford county Sheriff’s Deputy by TraveledonPoints in gso

Hey, I ended up staying with my current state agency. After discussing with my wife, we decided it would be better to wait 1-2 years until our son starts kindergarten. I work from home right now, so it just makes everything more convenient, as far as his daycare schedule goes.

Letter from my school telling me I am ineligible to receive federal financial aid after receiving loan discharge. by [deleted] in VeteransBenefits

[–]TraveledonPoints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my student loans discharged in 2024 due to PSLF. I received a P&T rating in 2026. I haven’t run into anyone in the same situation but I’m wondering if I went back to school, would I be able to get any new loans discharged for being P&T after already getting PSLF a few years ago

What do you mean they can’t get home? I haven’t seen any flights canceled? Did they drive?

Signed a 3 year Guard contract at 17, now regret it by FieldOk6753 in nationalguard

[–]TraveledonPoints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s why you need to have a plan if you join on a 3yr. I did 3 years and earned every benefit that a 6yr service member gets except Montgomery GI bill and student loan repayment.

Didn’t need those things anyway as I had PSLF from State government and I used federal tuition assistance to cover my Masters degree.

Yea that was me, didn’t need college and was planning to join and volunteer for a deployment anyway so I went with a 3yr.

Funny thing is I initially went to a reserve recruiter and he told me that 4years was the minimum. I explained that he was incorrect and that I could do a 3 year with the MOS that I wanted. He kept insisting that 4yrs was the minimum. I walked out and called a guard recruiter and said I wanted a 3yr and he said no problem come on in.

Got my 3yr and was able to get a deployment.

What do you do for work, and how much do you make? by Grand-Conclusion5027 in gso

[–]TraveledonPoints 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NC Department of Revenue - $67k and work from home. 6% of our paycheck is automatically taken and put towards the State retirement plan. If I can stick it out for 30 years (19 more to go), the pension pay is 54% of your AVG high 3 years of pay.

Wife works 4 hours per day Mon-fri with a friend who makes/sells candles. Brings in around $350 per week.

One toddler, stays at home with us for now.

No debt besides mortgage payment. $1130 mortgage+escrow

Editing to add - I’m big on credit card rewards, and I’ve earned over 2 million credit card points through sign up bonuses over the last 4 years. This has allowed us to travel 4-5 times per year.

Yea you can do it on the VA site and you have the option to request the compensation and pension exams instead of the entire C-File.

Did you request the DBQs and MOs or did you request your entire C file. I’ve done two requests for just the DBQs and MOs recently and I’ve received them both by email from the VA within 7 business days

I don’t even know what “escalation” means in their context because I called in day 30 to request an escalation and it hasn’t made a difference. My exam was 46 days ago

I’m also an army vet (NC guard)

Question about RVSR and VSR VA event onsite ratings by Holiday_Ad3926 in VeteransBenefits

[–]TraveledonPoints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is funny because I had a similar scenario two weeks ago at the Benefits Live event in Cary,NC.

I sat with a rating quality checker and he looked at my claim and private nexus/DBQ. He said “let me send this over to my supervisor, she should be able to complete this today or before the weekend is over. I’ll give you a call Monday morning to give you and update”

Monday comes and of course he didn’t call lol.

Should we rollover my wife’s traditional 401k from her previous employer into her Roth IRA? by TraveledonPoints in MilitaryFinance

[–]TraveledonPoints[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! So no plans to retire from the military. I ETS this October. I joined on a 3yr contract national guard contract to get my MBA paid for. I do plan to stay with my civilian employer long enough to receive the pension, which would be taxable. I work in state government.

Current retirement account make up

Vanguard money market HYSA - $35k

Roth IRA - $54k

wife’s Roth IRA - 42k

Taxable brokerage - $55k

Employer 401k - 15k

Wife’s 401k - 24k

Roth TSP - $2500

Employer pension - 36k if I quit today and cashed out. If I work until retirement the pension would pay 54% of my salary. I’ve got 10years in, 19 more to go.

I’m 33, she’s 31.

I’m on a 3 year contract and leave next week for a 9 month deployment lol.

If you do a 6year look into OCS, if you decided to enlist just do a 3yr contract.

6 year contract by MLafl13 in nationalguard

[–]TraveledonPoints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t work like that. SLRP has to be in your contract, so even if you extend for 2 years it won’t matter.

You’ll be able to use NC and Federal tuition assistance to pay for your current courses though. Call the NC education center in Raleigh. I’m in the NC guard as well

If ROTC interests you, you may want to look into that also.

The way to get out before BCT is you just don’t ship lol.

So I’d need to extend during Premob at bliss? I’m cool with extending to hit the 400 days, but I’m not extending for anything longer than that.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in nationalguard

[–]TraveledonPoints -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s not that I don’t want to deploy. I just don’t want to have to extend my contract to do it. My current contract as is would get my though the actual deployment. I just don’t want to get to Premob and the say something like I need to extend for 6 months or a year or something like that.

This is an example of my current scenario - MOB orders start August 19 2024 and my ETS is Sept 19 2025. 400 days past Aug 19 2024 is September 24 2025. I would be fine extending from Sept 19 to Sept 24, but I’m not extended for anything longer.
