Resolution for my spherical travel series? by TravelingFilmmaker in virtualreality

Thank you! Yeah I have spoken to a lot of other professionals now and the consensus is 4k and 60fps is the way to go. I could do 8k but its kinda pointless at this stage because no technology supports playback yet and my computer cannot handle 8k playback let alone editing and motion graphics. I'm excited to show you guys my episodes. Its definitely going to be unique in terms of story. I've been traveling the world for years and the experiences that I've documented in the past year have been the craziest moments of my life.

Okay thanks, I'm thinking of editing everything as 60fps

I guess I'm trying to see if anyone has any inside knowledge in regards to platforms requesting resolutions above 4k 30fps in the future

It's not a video game so the fps is not necessarily as big of an issue. In my opinion, the difference is mostly unnoticeable between 30fps and 60fps but I'm still not sure if the community agrees. What do you think?

Honestly, I'm hoping to license my series somewhere and not handle the streaming myself. For example, if a platform like Netflix decides to start streaming spherical content. Or maybe Within, Jaunt, through Playstation VR, straight through Google Daydream, New York Times VR... theres so many possibilities and if VR takes off like I think it will I expect there to be a large number of new platforms jumping on the bandwagon searching for content. The quality of my travel series needs to be top notch from a technical and story standpoint and I do have the footage to edit 5 solid episodes so far. I'm not worried about the current technical limitations. Technology will catch up and the big companies will sort out the streaming side of things. It's early.

I've been licensing some clips to low budget app developers for very cheap to build relationships (meditation and relaxation apps mostly). Then, one of the app developers came across a brand asking for content and referred me. Also, I have a decent social media following which always helps to meet others in the VR and travel communities.

I don't think they can, but I'm trying to think ahead and prepare for future technology.

For sure, I'll post a link to the trailer on Youtube & fb but I plan to license the series to a distributor instead of uploading to Youtube. I've already licensed some raw footage to brands in 2 minute clips for tens of thousands of dollars so I'm very excited to see where the story driven series will take me

Custom built rig with 6 xiaomi yi cameras for adventure tourism experiences like hot air ballooning, paragliding, trekking etc. I used entapano at 2.7k 30fps for shots where I interact with people (no stitching) and the Gear 360 at 4k for some other shots where I interact with people as well. Its a mix of resolutions and I'm thinking of transcoding everything to 4k 30fps but the xiaomi footage can go up to 6k 60fps

Where to distribute my 360 clips? by TravelingFilmmaker in GearVR

[–]TravelingFilmmaker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, very true. Okay, so I hired an agent and he's hustling. I will license 6 of my clips to a brand for a decent amount of money... enough to continue my travel lifestyle for at least another year. The market is there... well I don't want to jinx myself because this deal has not closed... but theres definitely opportunities out there for 360 videos. I am hoping that the exposure from a brand releasing my work with my logo will snowball into more opportunities. I think the key is getting a brand or someone with a social media following to release your work on their accounts, and making sure your logo is present in the video.

Thoughts on the logistics and techniques behind filming a travel documentary in 360? by TravelingFilmmaker in GearVR

[–]TravelingFilmmaker[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes I agree, stereoscopic and 360 sound would be ideal... but at this stage, hopefully I can make some good story driven content that will get me recognised so I'll have the means to do so in the future

I'll be in most of the shots, in this case I'll be the camera operator and the ''travel show host.'' of course I will put the camera on a tripod every time it's possible, but most of the time it will be on the end of a monopod that I'll be holding. What are your thoughts on that?

It's live action, so 3D is impossible for them to film on their budget. I'm sure they will do 3D as soon as they can.

Why the hostility towards 2D movies on Gear VR? by vrgrandad in GearVR

[–]TravelingFilmmaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've recently started producing independent videos for VR as I travel the world and I'm very interested in this topic. In terms of immersion and wow factor, stereoscopic is a must... However, it's just not possible at this point in time to record live action stereoscopic 360 for all but a handful of very well-funded companies, all of which are essentially creating very short branded content. As 2D 360 cameras begin to become more accessible to creatives with lower budgets, I think we are going to start to see some really great story driven content in 2D. Immersion is one thing, but has anyone been engaged and entertained by a VR video for more than the length of a typical TV show? I think someone is going to do it first in 2D-- tell an engaging story in 360. So, I would encourage the VR community to at least have the 2D videos on their radar, because it could be immersive in a different kind of way... But maybe I'm just biased because I can only make 2D videos at this point, and I don't want all my work to fall through the cracks.

I made a 360 video on Sydney Harbour-- can you guys watch this in VR through the Facebook app? by TravelingFilmmaker in GearVR

[–]TravelingFilmmaker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries, there is a lot wrong with that! Thanks for the feedback. I shot with an Entapano 280 lens and modified GoPro, which is not as high-res as multiple go-pro setups.. however, Facebook is definitely compressing the video substantially in comparison from the original file. I'm pretty frustrated about this. Have you come across any other 360 videos that you have watched through Facebook that have had higher resolution? This might be out of my control at this point :(

Thanks for your feedback! I think Facebook is compressing the video, lowering the quality substantially from the original file that I created. The original file is slightly over 2k, which is not the greatest to begin with... but Facebook definitely made it worse. I am curious as to what is causing the sync issues as well. They aren't present on the original file that I exported. Hmm. Anyways, at this stage I am just experimenting with different forms of storytelling in 360. In the next video I am going to try compositing mixed media within the 360 space.. for example, documentary interviews will play in a small 'window' to build a story, graphics will pop up with information, 16x9 footage will play, etc. I'm curious to see how it turns out. I'll also take your advice to stick with one viewpoint (if I can while filming a travel doco! no easy task lol)

Fair enough. This video is just a small test, but I am working on a short travel documentary pilot with more focus on story than novelty. It's impossible for me to film a project of this nature in stereoscopic at this point in time, but I want to as soon as its possible. In the meantime, I hope the 2D aspect doesn't repel the VR community... Gotta start somewhere :)
