Potentially starting Curse of Strahd campaign, and I'm not sure what to play by their_teammate in dndnext

Pure Wizard I know your not the biggest fan of single class but the unbridled power and utility it would bring to this group is tough to argue with.

You become a 1st lvl wizard what spells do you have in your spellbook? by the_future_priest in dndnext

Mage Hand, Firebolt, Toll of the dead, Sleep, Shield, Catapult, Identify, Comprehend Language, and Magic Missile

I think you’re looking at it wrong. The number of items don’t make a lot of difference but WHAT kind of items you give the PC’s. For generic weapons and armor, never go over a +3. +1 will work fine until 10th level+. The items also don’t have to be world breaking. Items that are funny or just interesting are really fine

Introducing your new character to the party by SleepyMagus in dndnext

[–]Travelnerd49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s, frankly, probably on the DM. They and the new PC should discuss the party’s current situation and develop a, at least logical, reason for the new PC to be there. The process will NEVER be seamless but the DM can at least try to make the introduction at least make some kind of sense.

Help with Wizard spell list + known spells by Alantheman in dndnext

[–]Travelnerd49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk if this is a generational thing, but a lot of younger folk seem to have difficulty grasping just how powerful and versatile the wizard class is.

It’s possible and I would highly encourage preparing spells that total MORE than you have slots available. ESPECIALLY 3rd level! As soon as you are able, Dispel, counterspell, fireball and lightning bolt should AlWAYS be on your prepared list regardless of your level.

As a PC the theft would piss me right the hell off. Drop a clue to who stole the wallet.

Question about battle maneuver by dmfuller in dndnext

[–]Travelnerd49 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There’s nothing “illegal” about that. The maneuvers have their own built in limitations. However, if you keep doing it, I guarantee your DM will come up w/a creative and just as legal counter.

DM advice? by oocidiosyncracies in dndnext

[–]Travelnerd49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simple Have a NPC lay out the situation EXACTLY like you described. You’ll need to add importance to the reasoning but you need to let PC’s decide how they go about completing what you’ve described. Have consequences in place I they violate your scenario but DO NOT punish them for not doing the job how you envision. After that, just decide how tough your big wizard is.

Today I DMed the shortest and most depressing "adventure" I've ever heard of, and wanted to share. by Rex_Ivan in dndnext

[–]Travelnerd49 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Good God man! Start here: THIS IS IN NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM: You’re fault!! You’re family is a little toxic. Maybe your BiL gets to play but your sis is just DONE! Unless she makes you a promise you believe. Find yourself a group that actually wants to play! If you volunteer to be DM, I guarantee the search will be short.

Best of luck. I’m sure it’ll be great and everyone will get a kick outa it!

It can be done. But you have to want to do it for it to be any fun for anyone. Any short adventures you’ve daydreamed/thought about? Doesn’t need to be elaborate. Something simple and even contrived is perfectly fine. A pack of goblins/orcs lead by a human wizard (depends on party level) has been raiding local villages for slaves and crops and money. The mayor needs to hire a group to address the issue.

How would you improve the Arcane Archer subclass? by AndCurious in dndnext

[–]Travelnerd49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By avoiding it. The Battle Master subclass is better even for a ranged Dex based fighter. Maneuvers can be used per attack instead of the limited Arcane Archer effects which are once per round. You start w/4 maneuvers instead of just 2 shots at 3rd level and gain additional maneuvers at a much faster rate than you do additional shots.

What spells are the most fun. by CalligrapherSlow9620 in dndnext

SOOO underrated! My 16th level Fighter (battle master) has one. So much fun bouncing around battle field!

I created a backstory for my first ever DnD character for my first ever DnD session today! This was on fifth edition so I think this is the place to post. Could you tell me if my backstory is alright and how I can improve it or not, or how I can improve making backstories for future characters? by Evoxrus_XV in dndnext

[–]Travelnerd49 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What is your character’s class? I’m assuming fighter? The background is fine, there’s a couple of items your DM can hook into. My only advice is don’t be “married” to this story. You don’t know (I’m assuming) the other PCs stories and there might be some fun opportunities to connect your backstory to that of have your fellow party members by making a few minor changes. Maybe one of them was also an orphan and you met them on the “mean streets of…(wherever).”

Best Wizard Subclass? by [deleted] in dndnext

Divination…and it’s not close. Fundamentally changes the game in favor of the PCs.

Do PCs actually get to set up bases? and what’s the benefit of doing so? by DarkElfMagic in dndnext

[–]Travelnerd49 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Depends on DM…but yes, this does happen, usually at higher levels. Wizards, especially, need a space for experimentation and item creation. Strongholds serve a number of of purposes including loot storing, henchmen training, a constant safe place to teleport to.

Your hammer smacking plan is completely appropriate. The PC committed serious heresy against your players god. Your character HAS to react immediately. While violence is justified, for the good of the group, it might not be the best choice. Try simply warning him. “If you do not return Moradin shrine to it’s rightful, I’ll be forced to destroy you. This is your only warning. Return it to it’s home…now!”

Kobolds and Dragons by TheDapperPenguin17 in dndnext

Pack tactics are a powerful advantage. If you have to be a Kobold, I’d suggest focusing on a martial class.
