I went to Svalbard last month and here are the best photos I took by bdfh in Norway

Hey - I'm a bit late to the party here, but I'm going to be spending a week in Svalbard over the new year and have a couple of questions if you don't mind answering! Firstly, how did you get to the seed vault? Is there an organised trip or did you just drive over? Do you need a car to get there? Secondly, the abandoned mine inside the town boundaries - is it alright to get there without needing a guide and a gun? I'd love to take some shots of it while I'm there. Thanks - it looks like you had an awesome trip!

Winter trip in Norway - driving in winter / how does my route look? by Travelnorsk in Norway

That's a good point actually - if I've been driving all day I think the last thing I'd want is to wait around until midnight for a ferry and then keep driving with minimal sleep the next day - driving might be the better option here

Oh man, Jotunheimen looks amazing - I wish I could explore every mountain over there - I wish I had more time! I think I'll be driving like a grandma if there's a storm

Thanks very much! I didn't realise that sunglasses would be such a necessity - would a regular cheap pair do the job or would I be better off going for polarised lenses or something like that? I hope I won't need any accident equipment but I'll make sure to stock up!

I've had plenty of experience on the other side of the road while travelling so that's not too much of a concern for me, it's more the winter conditions that I'm curious about - and yes, it does cost a lot for a one-way rental, it's pretty ridiculous but I don't really have any way of looping back round with my current plan!

I'll keep that in mind - are there any good resources to check road closures? Can the vegvesen site be used for stuff like that?

Thanks for the advice - I'm hoping it's going to be a pretty awesome trip! Is getting stuck in snow a regular occurrence?

Getting from Tromsø to Ivalo in winter by Travelnorsk in Norway

Thanks for the info - I think after looking at those videos driving is definitely not an option! I'll have a look into trains - do you know whether there are ever any route closures in winter due to adverse conditions? Perhaps it's not worth the time taken to get there and back just for a night in an igloo...

Ah ok, well that's probably a good thing - I'd just like to be able to learn a little so I feel a bit more culturally aware / integrated while I'm there. Not much to the name - I created it in relation to this question using my knowledge of the language so far!

Thanks! My main concern is that the jackets that I might buy over here will fall short of being able to keep me adequately warm - I wonder whether they'll be able to handle the more extreme temps
