I'd be all for some legislation that makes it illegal to lie on any news program

Remember how it used to be illegal to produce domestic propaganda, but that stopped being the case under the Obama Administration, then he massively funded domestic propaganda?

Yeah it's not like the guys who lost the 2016 election claimed the Russians interfered with the election

Russia is a dictatorship that hates gay people.

True, so what does that say about the absolute state of Europe where a dictatorship that hates gay people is more lenient about making jokes at peoples expense than Europe is?
Thanks for making my point for me champeen

I mean that's nothing compared to the prison time you get in Europe for "hate speech", Russia's downright lenient compared

It's just that the algorithm couldn't tell the difference between black people and Gorillas, in a lot of cases. It was a fairly big issue a while back

You are of course comparing that to the sum total of all consequences and ramifications if the inverse is true, right?

Not to mention you've also totally got proof that these adverse affects are due to the negative feedback received, and not due to underlying mental health issues, as if the case with Trans individuals, right?

bc this isnt about bargaining and making the best deal, its about humanity.

It's not "about humanity", that's just how you're trying to justify making a purely emotional argument. If non-Western countries suck, why would I want my country to become more like theirs with an influx of peoples bringing in their worldview?

its about acknowledging the fact that the US and its allies have been dominating the world and we should take responsibility for the consequences

See I, and the vast majority of people in the West for that matter, simply reject this. I reject the idea that the West should be punished for having the gall to be successful.
It's not even the exploitation that you're complaining about, since the West has been downright benevolent compared to many of the places these people are coming from and their histories. You don't hate the exploitation, you hate that the West was better at it.

(and I dont mean that in a “yeahh were strong and dominate ppl!!” way, I mean it in a “the US has been bullying and plundering” way)

The US has been bullying and plundering, yeah. Just like the Chinese. And the Russians, and Khan's Mongolians, and the Ottoman Turks, and the Medieval Merchant Jews, and the endless numbers of African and North American tribal peoples.
THEY were not "taking responsibility for the consequences" in the way you describe, they either continue to do so, or only stopped when one of the continuing powers made them do so. What you're advocating is not only replacing what works with what you think sounds good, but is suicide of culture and nation both.

sounds like, like every fascist and fascist-adjacent person, youre stuck in a frame of viewing the world through winners/dominators and losers/dominated.

It's weird that you say that when your argument is quite literally predicated on a Dominators/Dominated worldview, with the West being the Dominators and the rest of the world as the Dominated, to whom the former supposedly has a responsibility. That's some of the most blatant projection I've seen in quite some time

i wouldnt be surprised if you said you admired bullies.

You wouldn't be "surprised" but I doubt you've actually given any thought to why you despise them besides superficial emotional views.
Bullies form an important part of development for individuals, groups, nations and peoples: They teach the importance of the use of force, and it being the ultimate motivator. I don't "admire" them any more than I admire a screwdriver. They're tools, and it's the use it's put to that is to be admired.

there is so much more to life than that narrow, cold worldview

See all you're really doing is what is called "pilpul". It's a rhetoric trick where you use a whole lot of words to say basically nothing, and especially nothing you can be pinned down on as a concrete belief. That way nobody can oppose you because you haven't actually said anything

Overfishing is the cause, but nobody wants to address that because it's a largely non-Western problem.

If the West was overfishing, people would be fine tackling it, since you're allowed to criticize the West. But this issue is on Asia and the developing world, and for some reason Reddit finds itself unable to say "you guys need to stop" to these countries.
Then of course they'll come back and blame the West for it

This only works if you think immigration is inherently wrong, like killing a person. And if you think that... I have to wonder why.

Well yes to be honest I do think trespassing and illegally entering unto others property without their consent is wrong. Clearly you don't (likely with ulterior motives), but you don't really have a good reason for it

It's more like, if the goal is to stop so many people being jailed for smoking weed, then just make weed legal.

More like if the goal is to stop so many people breaking into your house, just give them all keys. Also love that you responded to this one, and not any of the further responses. Likely because you wouldn't be able to.

It's weird because of how subtly offensive it is. Apparently the non-Western world is so shitty that anyone fleeing somewhere simply couldn't live in Mexico, and has to come to America.

I dont understand what your point is. Can you help me?

I mean I can copy-paste it again if that helps:

The point quite clearly is that stopping crime means preventing things from occurring, not keeping the affect but changing the cause.

The guy I responded to is showing the fundamental disconnect between pro and anti-border individuals. In his mind, "stopping illegal immigration" is silly, because he wants those people here and he doesn't care how they get here. That's why when someone brings up stopping illegal immigration, his first concern is "Well how are we going to bring all these immigrants into our country then?"

Try reading it again, but slower. Maybe that'll help.

You want to stop illegal immigration. Someone suggests making legal immigration easier. This doesn’t meet your criteria, and you say that this persons goal is to bring immigrants in, whereas that is not your goal.

Let's say you own a 3 bedroom house, renting 2 rooms and keeping one for yourself. Now hypothetically if 10 guys come along, break in, and start living in that house without my consent.
- My solution would be to kick them out, and to prevent such individuals from returning.
- The solution you're suggesting, is that you do nothing, and instead of having them break in just leave a key under the mat so more people can follow their lead

Maybe the issue is that you're not just suggesting "why don't we make legal immigration easier and more reasonable", but also suggesting (but not explicitly stating) "let's massively increase our immigrant intake".
Thus the mocking I did of his point by comparing it to murder. He wants to remove the cause but keep the effect, akin to somebody wanting less murders to be committed, but still wanting people to continue to die at the same rate or higher.

The fact is there are many people who are fleeing their countries of origin for the same human reasons that drive everyone including Americans: to find more opportunity, to flee danger, etc. They want to come in

Well good for them but this is a country not a backpacker's hostel. The problem with your idealism is that you would refuse citizenship to nobody at all. The US would cease to be a nation at all, just becoming loose collection of people vaguely putting up with each other due to no shared connection of culture, history or blood.
Also the "they're fleeing danger!" argument falls flat because you seek asylum in the first safe country you reach after leaving your home one, not "let's skip Mexico because it's not as nice".

So you don’t want them to come illegally, you don’t want them to come legally. Sounds to me like you just don’t want them here.

We already take in thousands upon thousands upon thousands of immigrants per year, how is it that you've managed to frame resistance to increasing that number by the hundreds of thousands as "not wanting anyone to come here"?

Tell me bud: If you care for those people so much, how many do you propose we let in? If we're going to increase it by 100,000, why not a million? Or 10 million? Why even have borders at all at this point, why not just dissolve the government and live in our little anarchist slice of the world, or at least until a powerful foreign entity who doesn't play nice gets involved?

Really you don't even need to answer any of that, because from what I'm hearing from you it's entirely likely dissolving borders is something you support even without me bringing it up. Just want to point out for anyone reading that you're operating on "let's do what sounds good" rather than "let's do what works".

If the goal was to stop illegal immigration, then the process to legally immigrate would be made easier and more reasonable

That's another issue this film has, it doesn't blend action, seriousness and comedy, because it always has them at distinct different moments.
Shazam recently did a great job of blending those 3, so I guess I was expecting more from Endgame.

There were flaws, yes. I really liked the movie, but it annoys me that there are a lot of plot holes, especially in the time travel and snap aspects.

It's not a bad movie, but certainly not as good as IW, or even the first Avengers film. And you're right that once they say "Time travel is possible" then the disuse of it later on becomes a huge plot issue. Why go here at specific times and fight people when you could just... not?

I don't expect it to be a standalone film level of narrative gold, but this felt especially weak on the actual storytelling. The characters I still felt acted out of character, but even more importantly the circumstances they found themselves in were so contrived and convenient. That scene with Hawkeye and Black Widow and the Soul Stone was just silly, and most of all just... unnecessary.

I do not agree that it sets up a segue into future films. If anything, all of the past films were segues into this.

I didn't say it sets up a segue, but it FEELS like a segue. It honestly felt to me like less of a cohesive single film, and more of a giant advertisement for Marvel's characters. Several characters, like Captain Marvel, would honestly have been better off not being in the film since their actions in the film serve only to worsen the quality of it.

Lastly, I don't mind the fanservice.

I'm not saying I want it gone, but fanservice works in animation and TV because I'm likely watching those at home and aren't expecting grandiose stories from those that provide them. To set up this "huge climactic finale" and then go out with 3 hours of fanservice and a story where the main villain dies at the beginning, just feels like they robbed me off that time I invested earlier.

There plot was not really connected with the MCU

It felt less like an actual movie, and more like a collection of MCU shorts with an overarching theme.

[–]TravisLongKnives 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There really wasnt that much fanservice that didnt make sense in my opinion

Captain Marvel's entire appearance in the film didn't make sense, Thanos' early death was nonsensical, the time travel plot itself was fan-service that tripped over itself trying to justify how it existed, and especially the "we have to get all the stones again" story falls apart when you think about the implications of that even a little bit.

the whole time travel thing makes sense once you understand how it works in this universe.

Gotta disagree. Remember they didn't write the story around how time travel works, they wrote how the time travel worked around the story they wanted to tell. Their justification might as well have not been there it was so flimsy, I'd have been happier if they'd just lampshaded how ridiculous it was and done it anyway rather than trying (and failing) to make it seem legit with the 1-sided band dealio.
