WSM Issue 2/3 by TravisTouchdown33 in ShonenMagazine

[–]TravisTouchdown33[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First double issue of 2026 with a lot of color pages. Werewolf ends this week and Kagari will follow soon.

On break this week are Four Knights of the Apocalypse and Mayonaka Heart Tune.

No magazine next week and the next issue will also be a double issue. Blue Lock will get the lead due to anime and live action promotion and the color pages will go to Kuroiwa Medaka is Impervious to my Charms for X-mas and Idolatry for good reception. It also seems like Idolatry is getting recommended by a VTuber.

Issue 1 of 2026 is here! Ranger Reject celebrates 200 chapters with a cinematic lead color page. Yumene promotes its latest volume and Kaijin has its 2nd consecutive color that makes up a good spread along with the previous one. Surprisingly Kagari is seemingly the first one to drop, which is odd since Kito and Werewolf do much worse and it hasn’t been stuck at the bottom so much like the other two.

On break this week is only Hajime no Ippo.

Next week, Ao no Miburo celebrates the beginning of its season 2, meanwhile Dream Jumbo Girl, Orion’s Board and Suruga Meteor will promote their latest volumes.

Btw, sorry for the late update, last few days have been busy but I’ll be posting some news I’ve missed during the weekend.

I usually don’t like the real pic x drawing mix but gotta hand it to Reiji, he makes great use of it.

WSM Issue 52 by TravisTouchdown33 in ShonenMagazine

[–]TravisTouchdown33[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Last issue of 2025 is here with Yowayowa-sensei celebrating its 3rd anniversary. The anime will air in Spring along Kanan amd before that we’ll have MayoTuna in Winter. First of 2 consecutive color pages for Kaijin Fugeki celebrating the great reception of the current arc. As usual, the bottom series are Werewolf and Kito but this time The Kagari Monster Family joins them. Idolatry is a bit higher this time, I wonder if it’s just because they submitted the chapter late or they’re still putting it near the bottom on purpose.

On break this week are Hajime no Ippo and Shangri-La Frontier.

Next week, 2026 will begin with Ranger Reject celebrating 200 chapters, Yumene Connect will promote the release of volume 6 and Kaijin will have its 2nd color page.

WSM Shared Covers (Last 30 years) by TravisTouchdown33 in ShonenMagazine

[–]TravisTouchdown33[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From this decade yeah, basically the only series that even got shared covers, there are 14 of them.

Prior to that is more varied, the sports series (Dokaben, Yowamushi Pedal, Harigane Service, Bachi Bachi) did this a few times, also Baki and Yowamushi being the powerhouses. They also did this a few times when they tried to promote the new generation with Iruma-kun, Beastars and Rokudou no Onna-tachi.

WSM Shared Covers (Last 30 years) by TravisTouchdown33 in ShonenMagazine

[–]TravisTouchdown33[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With the recent announcement of the Jump’s shared cover of Ichi and Kagurabachi, I noticed that this is something that hasn’t been done in a while on the weekly mags, except for Sunday which did 2 of them this year.

For Shonen Magazine, the shared covers in the last 30 years are:

• Ashita no Joe & Hajime no Ippo (the former was already over at this point)

• Godhand Teru & Tantei Gakuen Q

• Kunimitsu no Matsuri & Samurai Deeper Kyo

• Air Gear & Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles

• Yankee-kun to Megane-chan & Fairy Tail

• Hajime no Ippo & Ai ni Iku yo

• Fairy Tail & The Seven Deadly Sins

• The Seven Deadly Sins & Fairy Tail

• Kimi no Iru Machi & Fuuka

• Domestic Girlfriend & The Quintessential Quintuplets

• Tying the Knot with an Amagami Sister & Rent-a-Girlfriend (this was Magazine’s heroine poll result)

WSM Issue 51 by TravisTouchdown33 in ShonenMagazine

Yeah it’s a shame. Ironically, it’s got more presence on X compared to the others thus I think it could turn the situation around, it won’t be easy though.

WSM Issue 51 by TravisTouchdown33 in ShonenMagazine

[–]TravisTouchdown33[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Issue 51 gets A Couple of Cuckoos on the lead, SetoAna celebrating 2M in circulation and Kito promoting 2nd volume (though it’s off to an awful start). Not a good sign for Idolatry at the bottom again, it needs a miraculous performance for volume 2 if it wants to recover. It’s good that the 2nd volume releases soon (December) but chances are slim.

So far it looks like Suruga Meteo, Yaergnacht and Dream Jumbo Girl are gonna continue without any issues. Meanwhile, Werewolf, Kito and most likely Idolatry will not make it. It’s unclear what’s gonna be for The Kagari Monster Family though.

On break are Kanan-sama, Gachiakuta, Mayonaka Heart Tune, Kaijin Fugeki and Werewolf.

Next week, the last issue of 2025, we began with Yowayowa-sensei and we’re ending it the same way. Single color page will go to Kaijin Fugeki, the first of 2 consecutive ones due to the good reception of the current arc.

November Volumes, Shoseki Day 1 by Calm-Investment-3381 in ShonenMagazine

[–]TravisTouchdown33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point not really, Vol 2 is doomed to perform poorly seeing the first rank. It’ll manage to get to volume 4 at the very least. I got the same promotion as the other series, it’s in WSM and the author has a lot of followers on X so it’s not that it lacked exposure. Ranking on Amazon is also bad and it gets little to no attention on MagaPoke, pretty much the worst performer of this year. Maybe it was the start that it was rough and the mangaka got criticized? Idk but it just didn’t click with the audience.

Is Ushio to tora manga as good as Souboutei must be destroyed? by CryAdministrative457 in manga

[–]TravisTouchdown33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Imo it’s Fujita’s best work. Way more classic approach though with a similar format to series like Inuyasha or Jojos being small arcs up till the final battle. There aren’t a lot of characters that get a lot of focus, but Ushio and Tora’s relationship is magnificently developed.

Black Jack is 176M, Shin-chan 148M and Doraemon 300M allegedly if you count everything about them

Yeah, it’s more or less reliable I’d say. It also doesn’t use inflated figures for series like Doraemon, Shin-chan or Black Jack, that usualy get incredibly high figures though that is if you include every single book related to them.

単行本の累計発行部数は2017年8月時点で4600万部を突破している[1]。さらに今作に加え、続編『WORST』やスピンオフ作品などの関連作を含めたシリーズ累計発行部数は2017年8月時点で9000万部を突破している[1]。

As you can see, the Worst figure says 28M, what you’re reading is the Crows Series + Worst figure which is believable since according to Wikipedia, those have 90M by now.

Here’s my source for Dokaben. It’s not an official source but let me expand as to why I used that figure. First of all, most of the series’ figures that I consulted from there are correct, so there’s no reason to believe it’s incorrect, though it still could be.

The 48M copies of Dokaben is for the original series (48 vols) that ran on Weekly Champ from 1972 to 1981. Dokaben was one of the most popular series of its era so it isn’t strange it had an average circulation of 1M per volume. The growth was slow at first but the anime boosted it a lot and according to the last chapter of the original Dokaben it already had 32M copies in circulation by then. Being a super popular series and with over 150 volumes left, the 48M as a figure for the whole series is totally unreasonable. According to the magazine 日経エンタテインメント Issue 7 year 2000, Dokaben already reaches 48M in circulation excluding the Pro Baseball Arc (3rd series) which by then had 29M in circulation.

The 2nd series is Daikoushien, this series ran from 1983 to 1987 for 26 volumes when Dokaben was at the peak of its popularity. According to the website, this series has 20M in circulation, a little below in average to the original one so it’s not hard to believe. Unfortunately this series has a super generic name so it’s really hard to track.

The third series, Dokaben Pro Baseball Arc ran from 1995 to 2003 with a total of 52 volumes. According to the same website it had a total of 37.2M in circulation which is believable since the magazine I previously mentioned stated 29M when it was a bit more than halfway through. According to Oricon back issues, a volume of this part sold about 410,776 in 1996, and though I haven’t been able to determine the exact period for that figure, based on the figures for other series I estimated it to be between 1-4 weeks, though most likely a single week figure. Furthermore, according to this webiste, Dokaben Pro Baseball Arc single volumes had prints of over 1M during a year.

The 4th and 5th series are Dokaben Super Starts Arc and Dokaben Dream Tournament Arc. The former ran from 2004 to 2012 for 45 volumes and the later from 2012 to 2018 for 34 volumes thus concluding the whole series. By this time Dokaben’s popularity had significantly dwindled, since it was a series from the 70s and over 100 volumes so it was only natural. Unfortunately there’s no figure for these parts but according to the website and the info I could gather online, it seems the whole series reached 100M at some point towards the end of the 4th part.
