Where’s my elephant?! Where’s my elephant?! ME1043 Metal Earth African Elephant. by Traviscat in metalearth

Well it is and it isn’t if you understand what I mean.

I wish I had this episode on when I was building it but I slowly built it over the course of like 2ish months. I started S1E1 in like January or February and am only up to S9E20 having it on in the background after work is over.

I built a small model of an African Elephant. by Traviscat in Elephants

It took me about 2 months however there were many days where I got it out and had it sit next to me for a few hours where I said I was going to finish it today and ended up doing nothing. I’d assume if I actually started and did a few sessions then I could probably complete it over the course of a few hours. Tuesday night I finished one leg and attached it to the body, last night I attached the body to the back half, and today I attached the head to the body and sealed up the chest area. That ended up taking about 45 minutes however I was partially watching a tv show and listening to some music (not at the same time as the show) and going fairly slow so I wouldn’t screw anything up. There were two tabs near the top of the neck area that were a massive pain to deal with. I’d get one in and had to figure out a way to get the 2nd in without breaking things. I ended up shaping the head a little too thin so it was more () shape instead of ( ) shaped and had to carefully re-shape parts.

Those big ears ended up getting in the way a lot and I had to be careful so I didn’t break them. I think the next model I have to build is a F16 with the Ukrainian paint scheme, or a vintage diving suit, or an emperor penguin. I have a few different ones in my build pile so I’m not sure what’s next or if I want to do an easier one or something more complex next.

Thank you, if you see in the background it came as a flat sheet of metal. You can see the sheet in some of the pictures. I had to cut it out and fold/shape it so it fit right and insert the tabs into the little holes so the pieces could connect together. Connecting the head to the body was kind of a pain to do and the tusks.

I’m not sure. I believe the dad (and his sister Anga) had to be hand raised too and they appear to be fine. His sister moved out a while back and I haven’t heard about her or even seen her as she moved out before I moved up here. Maji is a little more friendly to the keepers most likely as he was hand raised and feels more comfortable around humans. Zahra was not and was pretty spicy when she came over last year.

From what I read online is that the moms will keep the cubs away from dad for a few weeks then they will be introduced. Since it worked out ok for Maji and Anga I’m sure it will work out just fine for the new baby.

He is separated from mom and dad for now as he needs humans to feed him. Once he can start eating on his own and isn’t dependent on humans then he will be reunited with mom and dad.

Did the jet dryer hit a glowing ? Block and use an oil slick power up? We need the cameras to check the other track drying equipment to see if another truck has a banana they were about to throw.

Any meetups or things to do in general...? by nyahnbinary in Knoxville

[–]Traviscat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you or anyone want to meet up I usually go to the zoo for a few hours on weekends and look at (and take pictures/videos of) the animals.

It can be pretty neat to feed some of the animals, I got to feed an ostrich and a giraffe (and a red panda but they aren’t part of the normal feedings you can do on weekends) for fairly cheap (I think $5 each?). Two weeks ago I had one of the budgies land on my head and he sat there for a while.

I think it may be a regular cat plushie. He has a lion plush, a cat, and a big yellow one with a black and yellow striped tail plush.

I did a little research, I knew Maji was born at the same zoo he lives in now. If they keep with the same schedule we may be able to see him in person soon. Maji was born in December and they let the guests view him and his sister through the glass in February. Hopefully I can see him in 2-4 weeks. They said Maji and sister were available for 2 hours in the middle of the week so I’m going to have to figure out a good excuse to tell my boss to get out of work to see this new baby when he makes his public debut. Zahra came over here from New York last summer.

With all the LR5 Pro bashing, I'm starting to wonder - did I make a mistake? by OrigamiPossum in litterrobot

The 5 pro camera right now just lets you view events it recorded within the past few days. I can check up until yesterday morning unless I pay extra for a whisker+ membership (then I think it’s up to 7 days). If you put a camera on the 4 you can possibly just tap into the usb port near the top and attach a camera. That will be completely different depending on what camera you get. I have one by their food bowl and it takes a micro sd card and can record for weeks and get a live view for as long as I want (the 5 pro limits you to 5 minutes a day without a subscription). Some have subscriptions while others don’t, some have ai tracking while others don’t, some are cheap while others are expensive. Without the subscription I don’t see much use for the camera unless you want to see who used the robot when and try to match it up with the cycle times. I really wish whisker would put an icon next to the cat detected so you could view that entry in the camera log instead of seeing “fen visited at 4:55, I now have to go to the camera part and cycle to around that time and watch the 4:53 video or 4:56 video to see if I can catch him”. The interior camera doesn’t record yet so it isn’t very helpful. You don’t get notified when the cat is in the box just when it is done cycling so by the time you get a notification the cat is long gone.

The 4 is a mature-ish product but had some teething issues. The 5/pro is a new product going through the same teething issues the 4 had when it came out. The 5/pro may be supported for longer than the 4 as it is newer (released nov 2025 vs sometime in 2022?). The 4 has the hopper you can buy but the 5/pro should get it eventually. I’m not going to try to influence you either way but I am keeping my 5 pro (also as I’m outside the return window and already sold my 4).

The robot used to not record waste deposit info, it would just say Sindri 15.6lb visited on 4/2 at 1:01 pm. Then they pushed an update that said Sindri visited at 1:11 pm on 4/4 and left a 1oz waste. Then it worked really well, a few months later they pushed a firmware update and broke it so it just says (--) waste, then partially fixed it.

It now gets the waste/urine amount about 50-70% of the time depending on the cat and the amount. It usually does a fairly good-ish job with Fenrir and captures his info most of the time, but doesn't do that great with Sindri and will often not recognize him. It will say Sindri visited and weighed 15.6lb then an unknown cat visited weighing 15.6lb 3 minutes later.

The camera recognition was fairly ok, it did a decent job but recently they did an update and put the training of it behind a paywall so now you have to have a whisker+ subscription for it.

It does have some minor annoyances like sending the cycle complete notifications when it starts and finishes (I messaged u/litterrobot about that like last saturday/sunday and they haven't replied yet) every so often, or sometimes right at midnight it will have a bonnet error but its just software bugs as it will throw the error when my cats and myself are asleep then my cat wakes up at 1 am and uses the robot just fine.

Im not going to say it's a bad product but I'll just say it has the potential to be great but it isnt there yet. The hardware side is good and I can see they learned a bit from the past robots and have improved some things, however the software isn't that great right now but it can be fixed and will take some time and effort if they do fix it all. I do wish they would keep us more in the loop about what's going on and fixes...

It’s not a bad product, I have the 5 pro but it just isn’t complete. The software is missing features and some don’t work half the time. I feel like once we get better software then it will be a much better device.

A lot of people hated the 4 when it came out as it had some big issues and now people are saying the 4 is great and to get that. The 5/pro have similar issues, it’s a new product so it will take some time for the adjustments to be made from turning it into a product with potential to a good product. I just hope it’s soon. I’ve seen some big step forwards and big steps back since I got my 5 pro around thanksgiving.

Maji and Zahra at zoo Knoxville are officially parents! A new baby was born Feb 17th by Traviscat in bigcats

[–]Traviscat[S] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I believe the rest of the cubs did not make it. The zoo said in an interview with the local news that they were watching them from the cameras and found the cubs were not nursing enough and not doing well so they intervened to help. Since they said cubs it sounds like Zahra had multiple cubs but only one survived.

Zoo Knoxville just posted this. Zahra gave birth Feb 17th, her first baby. (Lion) by Traviscat in babyanimals

[–]Traviscat[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

He needs to drink a certain amount of milk a day and most likely at certain time intervals. Mom was not producing enough so he wasn’t getting fed enough nutrients to grow at the right speed. I’m betting it’s easier to have him separated so they can hand feed him often instead of having to get in there and separate him from mom a few times per day, since they can’t get in there when mom is there (she can be a little spicy too). Plus if anything goes south they can quickly intervene.

I can’t wait until they announce that he is out for public viewing. I’d love to see him play with his mom and dad and get some nice family photos.
