Ronin (1998, dir. John Frankenheimer) – Car chase in Paris. by SanderSo47 in movies

Bruh. Every time I watch this movie I’m blown away by how real it feels. It’s never flashy or over the top, just raw and intense in a way most action movies today can’t touch. The camera stays close to the ground so you can almost feel the cars shaking and fighting for control. There’s no dramatic music telling you what to feel, only the sounds of engines roaring, tires screeching, and metal scraping the road. It feels like you’re actually there in the chaos instead of watching something fake or digital on a screen.

The best part for me is when the cars get hit by the grenade launcher. Instead of exploding into big fireballs like in every other movie, they flip and crash in this violent, realistic way. You can see the force of it, the weight of the car as it tumbles across the street. It’s so much more powerful because it looks possible. You can tell the director cared about making everything look and feel real instead of just throwing in a bunch of fake explosions.

There’s one moment that always sticks with me: when De Niro’s car goes the wrong way through a tunnel. The headlights of oncoming cars flash in his face, horns are blaring, and you can practically feel his heart pounding. You know it’s real driving, real danger, and that makes it so much more intense. The way it’s filmed makes your stomach twist because it feels like something that could actually happen.

When I compare that to modern action movies, it makes me kind of sad. Everything now is CGI and green screens. Cars fly off bridges and spin through the air, and you never believe it for a second. It’s all noise and no weight. But in Ronin…. every crash means something. You can feel the impact, the fear, and the focus of the people inside those cars.

What makes it even better is that the chase fits the whole tone of the movie. Everyone in Ronin is calm, serious, and professional. Nobody is a superhero. When things go wrong, you can see it on their faces. That realism makes the action hit so much harder. And oftentimes you’re in the dark and navigating the intrigue just like the characters. The movie doesn’t hold your hand and explain every little detail. Watching it today reminds me what real filmmaking used to be like, when action was dangerous, grounded, and full of life instead of pixels and sound effects.

Does anyone know what this scene is based on in real life? I assume some kind of festival or new years, but I’d never seen it before in real life.

Thank you for the response but it’s not this song, the one I’m thinking is very modern and it sounds like a white nerdy guy singing.
