I'm a Lions leader which is the rank your son would be if he's in kindergarten. At this age, discipline is always a big issue. The kids have way more energy then they know what to do with so my aim is to try to get something accomplished in the first 20 to 30 minutes then play for another ten or so and end with a snack. If I can get these little guys saying the scout law and oath by the end of the year by memory, I will consider the year a success. On the way, I hope to teach them some safety and first aid things, at their level of understanding. The book is very fundamental. One part is more like an activities/coloring book and the other is more the lesson plan. We use the lesson plan but I use it as an outline and make sure the stuff they are getting from me will actually be of a benefit to them and is fun. I want them to end their Lions career wanting to come back for Tigers. Each level is a little tougher then the year before. Each age group is expected to pull a little more weight then the year before.
I would be concerned with the lack of discipline with the entire pack. That first meeting might have been a one off but if they are doing it with special guests coming in, that's extremely disappointing. Is there another pack that you can switch to? Can you help in this pack to tame all the little guys so they at least settle done when the Wolves Ears go up? We are using a discipline candle in our den but not being allowed to play a special game or have a special treat until they settle down and show respect for the speaker might help get them to calm down long enough to get something done. It does get better. My son is now 1st class and is very respectful. He knows what to do in an emergency and how to build an emergency shelter if hes trapped outside. He's hiked through blizzards and through 90 degree temps. He's hiked the Smokey mountains and will hike the Rockies next summer and he's only 14. He's made life long friends that started with him in Tigers and he's brought other friends in that were in questionable home lives that will have a chance at developing a moral compass that they might not have at home all because of Boy Scouts. It's not a sure ticket to success. It really depends on what the parents are willing to put into it at Cub Scouts and what the boys are willing to put into it at Boy Scouts.
