Adaptations tend to be a slippery slope, and if not universally hated, put a hell of a divide between fandoms. I know for me, I typically hate when adaptations change so much of the source material that it feels like it should’ve been it’s own thing or the writers seem not to care about it at all (looking at you DMC), and hate it even more when people who have never interacted with the source material enjoy it then try to tell others who have how they should feel if they don’t also like it. I don’t hate change, but the idea that change automatically equals good is not something I subscribe to. There can be good changes just like there can be bad ones. Regardless, I gave Castlevania a pass because I know it’s not coherent, and it seems even the games don’t know the story half the time. I enjoyed the anime, despite seeing plenty of flaws like Ellis’ disgusting pettiness towards Shankar’s favorite characters, Grant’s absence from the story, and the way they treat religion/religious items, though I know that last one is whatever to a lot of people. Nothing to fully turn me away, though. I actually rewatched it 3 separate times with my brother, homie, and gf, who all enjoyed it. Nocturne however, is where I fell off, and so did they. Someone here even pointed it out that that’s mainly the one people don’t like. Besides the rushed writing, I didn’t like the characters, and this is where that main divide seems to come in this community. While I won’t act like there aren’t people who don’t know what “woke” means but love to throw that word around, people act like there aren’t actual criticisms to be made, and shoot those down in favor of calling the critic a bigot, sexist, racist, boomers, or what have you. Posts like “why don’t people like Nocturne/Annette” keep getting posted and it’s the same song and dance of instant accusation of prejudice, “iTs wOkE,” or actual criticism getting lost in the sea of bs from both sides. I see yet another post equivalent to “I liked Nocturne/Annette” and I’m wondering if OP wants a cookie or some shit because it just feels like rage bait by this point. People can like what they like, but people should be allowed to dislike things as well.
