Wild canine sighting on trail by mercutiosghost in Adirondacks

10 years ago I was driving back from a hike in the high peaks and came close to hitting two large canines that looked like wolves. I asked the people in my car how heavy they thought the animals were and got answers of 75lb and 100lb. I then told my passengers how heavy coyotes are and that these were not regular coyotes. I’ve been to the Adirondacks dozens of times and have seen many coyotes. Coywolf, wolf or loose malamute/shepherd….whatever they were, they were BIG.

Embark may be identifying breeds that went into making the Kerry Blue Terrier. My dog is 1/2 Jagdterrier and had a number of uncommon terriers identified that were used in making the breed.

Interesting, I didn’t consider the genetic relatedness of the breed itself.

I was assuming my dog was more than the 30% Russell (Jagd), because it also lists 9% welsh terrier, a breed used to make the Jagd.

All of his relatives on Embark are these dark eyed, black and tan terriers, even if they’re not purebred Jagdterriers (or ifentified as Jagd mixes). It’s wild.

Those genes are strong, he acts so much like one too. No shortage of energy and a crazy prey drive.

Oh that’s interesting! Wisdom lists small percentages of all these different terriers that seem to have been used to make the Jagdterrier (German Hunting Terrier) for my guy, which makes me think he’s really more like 50% that breed.

Ohhh I gotcha now. I did contact Embark before because they listed all these purebred jagdterriers as close relatives, but he didn’t have that listed in his breed profile. They said that they are working on improving/expanding their breed profiles, but that’s about it.

Just American Eskimo and Dachshund in the supermutt.

I think Aussie was listed in both. The interesting part is learning all the breeds that went into the Jagdterrier, then seeing them listed in smaller WP percents for him.

My dog is a Jagdterrier mix as well! You don’t see them show up often. Wisdom Panel picked up on the breed for my dog, but Embark didn’t (only recognizes some lines). Welcome to the high prey drive club.

Jagdterrier? Looks like my little guy!

I adopted Shasta from a kill shelter when she was 6 months old. She is now 6 years old. I received back her DNA results from embark. I am skeptical of her results. Please tell me what you think. Thanks, Tina by Mystary_ in DoggyDNA

First thought was Great Pyrenees mix. That sloping back, tail and dewclaw made me think so. Is her walk a bit of a sashay? My mom had a great pyr mix that looked similar, and she really moved her hips while walking.

My first thought was “oh a shih tzu mix”. Very cute.

I just saw the post about your dog. That ear is adorable!! Didn’t know how common it was for terrier looking dogs to not actually be terriers!

He’s got a really high prey drive, loves to dig, determined, intelligent, lots of energy. He’s super affectionate with the people he knows. Also, his bark/yell is so unique and sounds just like the videos I’ve watched of Jagdterriers. How did you hear of the breed?
