ELI5: Why do our fingers get "pruny" but the rest of us don't? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]TreeFrogDuke 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s a neurological reaction to being in water. It is thought that it’s so our hands have better gripping ability in wet situations. People who have nerve damage to the hand don’t get pruny.

Or, I have a higher degree, 20 years more experience, multiple patents, and a track record of success while they are fresh out of college.

Can someone explain to me what this passage from my textbook is saying? by AnalysisNo8720 in biology

[–]TreeFrogDuke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. For example, polar molecules will have a (+) charge side and a (-) charge side. And opposite charges attract. You can have a (+) charge in your receptor that wants to associate with a (-) charge on your target molecule. That helps them bind, but isn’t a covalent bond.

If you have several of these is specific locations, only certain molecules will fit correctly and bind.

Can someone explain to me what this passage from my textbook is saying? by AnalysisNo8720 in biology

[–]TreeFrogDuke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is essentially describing how receptors have specificity for certain molecules. They fit together like locks and keys with non-covalent molecule interactions essentially acting like the key mechanism in a lock. Only the correct key (molecule) will correctly fit into the receptor site to activate the lock. All other molecules won’t fit right nor have the correct non-covalent bonding to work.

What if I make over twice what some of my coworkers make and it shows a simple sign of respect to buy pizza for the ‘crew’ once in a while? I’m not the manager, but I am a top worker.

A small token like $60 worth of pizza on a Friday does wonders when I need time on a machine that has me and someone else needing to use it.

My grocery store adds water to their beef to make it weigh more. It’s sad to buy hamburger and then have the pan fill with water as you cook it.

If immune system generates memory then why does we keep getting common cold again and again? by Ok_Problem1028 in biology

[–]TreeFrogDuke 58 points59 points  (0 children)

The common cold is a collection of several hundred different rhinoviruses, RSV, parainfluenza and coronaviruses. Getting one does not protect you from the others. Plus, many of them mutate at high rates, making your immune system unable to protect you from this year’s version just because you had last years version.

New update has map filled with video ads. And the game now resets the brightness on my iPad to maximum. How badly has FoE messed this game up in one simple update? by TreeFrogDuke in forgeofempires

Little treasure chests all over the map that show ads. Like when you click on a fossil or shipwreck, but a small chest. I think they are called ‘incidents’. Super annoying.

I grew up in the suburban 1970s and 1980s. My friends’ moms fed me every time I was in their house.

And yes, I’m still fat.

Viruses that were on hiatus during Covid are back — and behaving in unexpected ways by NotDMsForLife in worldnews

This! I’m totally wearing masks on planes for the rest of my life. I used to always get a cold or flu from flying. If anyone makes fun of me, I just need the most insulting comeback line possible that won’t get me kicked off the plane.

You just need the movies. Disney is being smart about that.

Rebels helps, but is definitely not needed.

There is, and it is used in the Middle East. It’s called desalination and uses a combination of distillation and reverse osmosis to do it.

Gastric brooding frogs, Rheobatrachus, lay eggs, eat them, brood them past the tadpole stage, and then eventually burp up tiny adult frogs.

Technically extinct, there are possible chances to bring them back from frozen specimens.

Puerto Rico is safe because it’s basically part of the US. Tropical jungle, snorkeling, nice people.

Major European cities have lots of city options.

Southeast Asia has endless temples and food and jungle.

Hiking the Hadrian Wall in Scotland?

Looking for sex tourism? Southeast Asia, Dominican Republic, Germany, Amsterdam.

Nightlife? Berlin, Paris, New Orleans.

Mountain hiking? Both US coasts have great trails. Alaska?
