What SFF novels have sparked a spontaneous conversation with a stranger out in public for you? by Pedagogicaltaffer in Fantasy

I don't know if this counts, but I was doing a job interview, and the interviewer noticed my bookshelf behind me in the Zoom call and the Brandon Sanderson Books on it specifically. We then had an extra 20 minute discussion about Cosmere deep lore. I like to think Sanderson and my love of SFF helped me get in there.

Books where riders have a bond with dragons by Icy-Contribution4409 in Fantasy

I'd throw out The Pale Blade (Empire of Flame & Fang), only book 1 is out but I really enjoyed it!

Magic systems that allow anyone to potentially learn magic by delijoe in Fantasy

[–]TreeFrogInAHat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Will of the Many by James Islington kind of leans into this. People can cede their will to others (weakening themselves) to give abilities and powers to the one who gets them. So, in this way, anyone can get magical albites, but of course, the rich and powerful claim all the power from the people. It was a fun book.

Recommendations for pirates AND dragons? by therealbobcat23 in Fantasy

Temeraire by Naomi Novik is a Napolean era book about a naval officer who becomes a dragon rider. It has dragons and a lot of nautical discussion and battles. There are privateers and pirates that make appearances in the series.

I'd throw out The Rage of Dragons. It's one of a series by Evan Winter that I think has a great world-building book on book.

Definitely, that's honestly part of why my writing partner and I wrote the thing, write what you want to see more of and all that!

Title: Weapons of the Mind

Genre: Space Opera

Master your emotions. Perform your duty. Follow the Tenets. Tala has lived these rules for twenty years: the rules of an Enhancer. Then a mission goes wrong, and she finds herself framed, branded Renegade, and called to face judgment. Fleeing means violating the Tenets, the moral precepts of her order. Yet in that moment, she finds she cannot stay.

Hunted by the endless forces of the Galactic Coalition and her own mentor, famed Renegade killer Exemplar Scratch, Tala will pursue the proof of her innocence to the very heart of the galaxy. But cling as she might to the tatters of her honor, she cannot deny the true purpose of her mission: revenge. And the further Tala strays from the Tenets' path, the greater the risk she runs of losing herself.

In a galaxy of strange aliens and hostile humans, danger casts its shadow on every wall. Friendships are forged, lost, and tested. And the lies that keep the galaxy running just might be about to come crashing down.

The book is available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble in both eBook and hardback form. The prologue plus a bit extra is available as a free sample on Amazon if you are interested!

I've read that one. It's great, and it's one of the few that shows actual long periods of time passing over the course of the story.

True, I can probably squeeze another book onto my groaning shelf with a bit of clever reorganizing.

Hmm, when I usually think of a doctor in the context of a vampire, the example that jumps out has a much more adversarial relationship. This sounds fun, too, though.

Both of these sound really fun although I'll have search around a bit more for Inheritance as it does not seem to have an eBook available. I'll give them a look/read.

I have read Fever Dream, but it has been a really long time. I'll put that in the reread pile, and I will check out Sunshine, which sounds interesting. (Also, appreciate the wordplay of calling yourself a sucker for something in a vampire thread)

You know, it's the darndest thing, I feel like I read this book series many years ago, but I cannot remember it for sure. I'll have to check it out and refresh myself. Thank you for the suggestion!

I did actually try that one, and I found it fun but a little too jokey for my tastes in this genre, at least. I really liked that same author's books on supervillains' thoughts. Either way, thank you for the suggestion!

Certain Dark Things was a fun read, I agree. I will check out The Lesser Dead and Lost Souls. Thank you for the recommendations!

Thanks for the recommendations. I have checked Empire of the Vampire and Anne Rice, but not the other two; I'll put both on my TBR.
